To clip-whom it may concern:- 1 Be it known that I, a cit zen of the-United States of America, re-
; concrete mixers simple and effective device that will permit yielding member to permit a stone to pass,
- constant, and in caseof passage of stones of State of "Michigan, new and-useful Improvements in Concrete- Mixers; and ingqto be a'full, clear, and exact description .of the invention,
iskilledin the'art to. make and use the same.
, without varying the proper terial, and-to fully described and particularly pointed out,
- an excess of proportion no. 922,860. I Specification of Letters-Patent. ratsatdna a5, 1909. I
' Application filed January 31, 1908'. Serial .No. 413,689. r I i i sists DEMOREST, l supported at the lower end upon rollers 25 and-supported at the upper or pulley 33 in the upper end of the drum, in the axis of which drum is rigidly inserted a shaft-8 extending outward through the receptacle and journaled'in 9 on the MIL'oN J.
siding at Belding, in the county of Ionia and have invented certain I do hereby declare the followa hearing such as will enable others i I outer end a pulley 22 and a crank. 23 or which it appertains to manually operating the machine. Any convenient agitator may )e attached to this shaft to act onthe contents of the hoppers.
A thrust bearing 24 is inserted between the bearing 9 and pulley 22 to take the down- ".My inven'tr n relates to improvementsiin and its object is to provide a the passage of stones'or other obstructions ions of the ma. the device 'with'various ranged substantially horizontal provide new anduseful features hereinafter more in the claims.
Heretofore it has been usual to'provide a which operated to at the same time permit sand or other material to pass with the stone, thus resulting in an irregular of the material. In my-device herein described, any increase of feed of one ingredient due to'the passage of a stone is bottom of the hoppers. The disk is .prefer-. vaccompanied a like increase of the other ably slightly conical to aid in discharging the ingredient so that the proportions remain material theref-rom.- .vi'alls 36 and36 tothc" radially from near its axis,
moderate size the machine does not need to the side walls of the hoppers at their outer hoppers extend upward from the disk and yield at all as will hereafter appean,
shaft 14, and supported in yielding contact with the packing on the bottom of the hoppers by means of a spring 18 surroundmg 6 on which. latter maybe placed the bags of cement. A segmental portion of the line; 33 ofllig. 2; Fig. 4. a detail in end disk is outside the hoppers and extends with elevation; Fig.1 5. an enlarged detail in plan in the upper end of the drum ,"7. supporting and moving the device from place Beneaththe disk 12 is a grooved pulley 13 to place. Upon this frame are various up: engaged by aroundendless belt ZOextend ng f wardly extended su ports 2 supporting a reover idlers 21 mounted on an arm extending ceptacle. 3 divided ya vertical'partition 4 downward from the bearing 9 an engaged into two parts forming two hoppers to re by the pulley 2'2'wherebythe disk isrotatcd.
' spectively contain the cement and sand. The disk 12 and pulley 13 are mounted on a Theyalso support a water tank 5 and shelf vertically disposed and slightly inclined sand ' extends downward from the tank shaft, engaging a thrust collar 17 on shaft, and supported at the lower end by a bracket 19 on'the frame 1; also provided with bearing rollers mounttact therewith by the tension of the belt 20.
The shaft is movable vertically whenever any:
solid obstruction passes under the gates 'sufe ficien'tly large and rigid to cause the'spring to 1 yield' The partition 36 extends down close to the disk and retains the cement in-the hoper bottom. The partition 4 is spaced apart partition. The Wall 36 is also spaced apart at a greater distance from the disk than the partition 4 whereby both the sand and cement pass thereunder and the quantity of passing is regulatedby a vertically adjustable gate (seeFig. 6). About two thirdsof the upper portion of the cylinder 7 is providedwith buckets 32 to carry the dry material upward and spill the same into the bottom of the cylinderlto 'thusthoroughly mix the said materialbefore the addition of water thereto.- To supply water, a pipe 27 and the flow of water is controlled by a valve 26 therein. This pipe is provided with a union 28 forming a rotative joint and is supported in a bearing 31 attached to one of the supports 2. This pipe extends downward opposite the lowerend'of the drum and thence in ward within the same to near the lower ends of the buckets 32 and close to one side of the drum and'above its axis, being perforated at the inner end for the discharge of water. (in this inner 'partof the pi e are mounted arms 40 extending downwar and toward the inner surface of the drum, on which arms is fixed a scraper 41 yieldingly engaging the inner surface of the drum to reinovethe material adhering thereto. This scraper is yielding-l3 held in contact with the drum by means of an arm 29 fixed'on the pipe 27 and having attached a spring 30, the tension of which spring rocks the pipe and yieldingly forces" the scraper 4-1 in contact-with the inner sur-.
face of the drum.
it will be noted that the cement is first laid on the surface of the disk and then the sand deposited above the cement. Thus any stones in the sand will be out of contact with the disk and in passing under the gate to get out of the hopper will be depressed into the cement and will not clog or'break the machine. I, therefore, do not find the yielding support necessary except in case stones of considerable size are put into the sand hopper. So also the cement only comes between the disk and the lower edge of the hopper bottom and thus I avoid. wearand friction due to sand in thisjoint.
This shaft 14 is on abracket 16 and the shaft held in con-' of a hopper havi disk, a yielding sere e drum, a crank and of the shalt, a hopper mclosmg a middle por 't-ion of the shaft and having a segmental per and closing thesame, means forrotatin b the'disk, a yielding support for the disk, a gatein the Wall of. the hopper above the'disk, a verticallymovable scraper .engagingithe' (disk outside the hopper and a mixing drum adapted to re'oeive'the material. 4
