COMBINATION POCKET-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Application filed. June 22, 1908. Serial No. 439,797.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Pocket- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combination pocket box adapted to contain and inclose a number of useful devices conveniently combined, and so arranged that the sides and top of the box form portions of some of said devices or otherwise cooperate with them.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box showing a knife blade projecting and a cover partly elevated. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box showing one side partly open and the cover closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal horizontal section taken through the box. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In these drawings 1 represents a box in the top of which is arranged a spring pressed hinged cover 2 and the said box has a side 3 hinged at one end of the box and provided at its opposite end with a sliding bolt lock 4, and having the opposite side slotted as shown at 5 and also provided with a circular opening 6, the top of the box being transversely slotted as shown at 7 adjacent said opening.
The end of the box adjacent the hinged end of the side 3 is also cut out as shown at 8. lVithin the box is a finger nail clip 9 similar to the spring clips now sold for that purpose and the cutting blades of said clip work in the opening 8.
The hinged side 3 carries upon its lower edge adjacent the opening 8 a cam flange 10 through which a pivot pin 10 passes thus hinging the said side to the box 1. and the end portion of the side 3 is itself carried around a curved outer edge of said cam 10 as shown at 11, said cam and said curved end portion 11 bearing upon one side of the finger nail clip 9, the side 3 acting as a cam lever for the purpose of forcibly closing the clip when the side 3 is open. The opposite side of the clip 9 is braced and held in position by a pintle 12 about which is coiled a spring 13 the ends of the spring bearing respectively upon a pin cushion 14 placed in the bottom of the box and upon the lowermost of a series of leaves 15 held between the cover 2 and the pintle 12 and spring 13, the said pintle and spring combined form the hinge for the cover 2. This fixed side of the clip 9 is also further braced and supported by an end of a pencil sharpener 16 the cutting blade 16 being arranged in the opening 7 previously referred to and the pencil being inserted into the sharpener through the side opening 6.
A knife blade 17 is slidably held between the side provided with the slot 5 and the pin cushion 14, said blade projecting through a slot 17 a formed in the end of the box diagonally opposite the cut out portion 8. The knife blade is movable by a headed pin 18 which works along the slot 5. The cover 2 is also provided with a slidable locking bolt 20, both the bolts 4 and 20 being operable from the outside of the box. The space within the box adjacent the finger nail clip 9 can be employed as a match box and a por tion of the side 3 is roughened as shown at 21 so that it can be used as a surface upon which to strike matches.
The leaves 15 form a book normally held closed by the spring 13, the cover 2 of the box forming also an outer cover for said book, and these leaves may have printed matter upon them or they may have oiled paper and postage stamps, pieces of court plaster, etc. held between them, or a portion of the leaves may have printed matter upon them and a portion may be oiled paper.
It will be obvious that when the side 3 is open the movable member of the clip 9 will have its cutting blade forced into engagement with the blade of the member held against transverse movement in the box by the pintle 12 and pencil sharpener 16, thus operating the nail clip in the usual manner. It will be noted that a box of this kind carries within itself a number of useful articles all of which when the box is closed and the parts are in their normal position, may be conveniently carried in the pocket.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A box of the kind described comprising a pivoted side, a pintle arranged in the box, a cover mounted upon said pintle, a spring car ried by said pintle, a plurality of leaves held between the said cover and the pintle, a portion of the spring bearing upwardly and outwardly upon the lowermost of said leaves, a
pencil sharpener arranged in a corner of the ting blades, and the movable member of said box adjacent the said pintle, a finger nail clip being operated by movement of the clip, the members of which carry cutting hinged side of the boX.
blades, one member of said nail clip being CHRISTOPHER JENSEN. 5 held in position by an end of the pintle and Witnesses:
an end of the pencil sharpener, the end of the GUY A. SWANsoN,
box being cut out in alinement with said cut- CHRISTIAN JENSEN.
