UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN E. PORTER, OF WOOSTER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE WOOSTER MACHINE COMPANY, OF WOOSIER, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
PULVE RIZING-ROLLER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulverizing-Rollers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pulverizing rollers, and more particularly, to that class or type in which the pulverizing roller comprises a plurality of roll-sections independently mounted upon an axle-shaft and provided with a plurality of peripheral pulverized tread-bars suitably s aced apart and adapted to more thoroughly crush or disintegrate hard clods or lumps of soil than is possible with the ordinary land-roller having a smooth periphery.
The primary object of the invention is to improve the general construction of the roll sections with respect to the specific construction and disposition of the several pulverizing tread-bars relative to the spider-heads, whereby said roll-sections are adapted to more thoroughly pulverize or disintegrate the soil than the ordinary roll-sections of this class with which I am acquainted.
Another object of the invention is to improve the construction of the several rollsections by inde endently mounting the pulverizing treadars in such a manner that they may be readily disconnected from or connected to the several spider-heads in case of their breakage and repair.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the pulverizing roller constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2, a detail plan view of the outer side of one of the improved spiderheads of a roll-section. Fig. 3, an edge view of the same showing the manner of mounting and securing the improved pulverizing tread-bars. Fig. 4, a perspective view of one of the improved pulverizing tread-bars.

like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The frame 1, of the improved roller is, preferably, formed of steel, as indicated in Fig. 1, of the drawings, and is provided at its ends with depending hanger brackets 2, carrying bearing-blocks 3.
The pulverizing roller is carried by and interposed between the hanger brackets 2, by means of an axle-shaft 4, having its ends mounted in the bearing-blocks 3.
The pulverizing roller comprises a plurality of roll-sections suitably spaced apart and inde endently mounted on the axleshaft 4. Each roll-section comprises a pair of spider-heads 5, each comprising an elongated spacing hub 6, and a rim or felly portion 7, said felly or rim ortion carrying a series of radially-extendmg attaching and supporting clips, each comprising a main body portion 8, and an out-turned or angled end 9, preferably, extending at right angles to said main body portion 8, and the spiderhead 5. The main body portions 8, are, preferably cast in with the rim or felly portions 7, of the spider-heads when the lat ter are cast. The pulverizing tread-bars 10, are, preferably, formed of channel bars, of substantially U-shape in cross section, the grooved or channeled sides of said tread-bars at the ends thereof taking over and being secured to the angled ends 9, of the clips in any suitable and convenient manner, preferably, by means of rivets 11, as indicated most clearly in Figs. 2, and 3, of the drawings. It will be observed that the disposition of the U-sha ed tread-bars is such that their con Vex sides form the periphery of the roll-section, and it is believed, that the specific construction of the several tread-bars, and the arrangement and combination of the parts form a generally improved roll-section for the purposes hereinbefore mentioned.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the o eration and advantages of my invention W1 1 be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a pulverizing-roller, a roll-section comprising spider-heads carrying a series of cast in radially-extending clips provided with angled ends extending about the outer sides of said spider-heads, and a series of U- shaped tread-bars having their convex-sides arranged about the periphery of said roll-section and the ends of their channeled sides taking over and secured to the angled ends of said radially-extending cli s.
2. In a pulverizing-ro ler, a roll-section comprising spider-heads provided with spacing hubs and rims carrying a series of cast in radially-extending clips provided with angled ends projecting beyond the outer planes of said spider-heads, and a series of channel tread-bars having their channeled sides taking over and secured to the angled spider-heads, having their rims provided with a series of supporting clips having angled ends on the outer sides of said spider-heads, and a series of U-shaped pulverizing treadbars having their ends secured to the angled ends of said supporting-clips.
4. A pulverizing roller, comprising a frame 'rovided at its ends with depending hanger brackets, an axle-shaft having its ends secured to said hanger brackets, and a plurality of pulverizing roll-sections independentlymounted on said aXleshaft, said roll-sections each comprising a pair of spider-heads each rovided with a spacing hub portion and a telly or rim portion carrying a series of radially-projecting clips provided with outturned ends at right angles to said spiderheads, and a series of pulverizing channel tread-bars having their channeled ends taking over and secured to the out-turned ends of said clips.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
EDWIN E. PORTER. Witnesses:
