WAGON-JACK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT W. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Verdon, in the county of Hanover, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to niake and use the same.
This invention relates to wagon jacks, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction, and increase the efciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device wherein the lifting` lever is locked in position from accidental displacement when in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character comprising a supporting standard having a plurality of fulcrum elements or sockets, a lever having a fulcrum pin adapted to alternately engage said sockets and with the lever reinforced to increase its strength without material change in weight.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation with the lifting lever in position therein. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
rlhe improved device comprises astandard provided with a suitable supporting base and with a longitudinal opening therethrough, the standard preferably formed of spaced side members 10-11 with a spacer block 12 between the upper ends and a spacer block 13 between their lower ends, the longitudinal opening being formed between the spaced sides and the spacer blocks as shown.
The base portion of the device is preferably formed of spaced side members 14- 15 and spacer blocks 16--17, the whole bolted firmly together, while the side members 10-11 and the spacer blocks 1213 are likewise bolted together, the whole thus forming a very strong and substantially self-` supporting standard. The inner faces of the side members 10-11 within the longitudinal Specification of Letters Patent.

opening between them is provided with elongated recesses 18-19, and fitting within these recesses are cheek plates 20-21 of metal and each provided with a plurality of spaced sockets 22-23, the material of the cheek plates between the sockets being inclined to form braces beneath the sockets, and thus more firmly support them. Each cheek plate will preferably be formed of cast or malleable metal and of sufficient strength to withstand the strains to which it will bc subjected. Each of the side members 10-1 1 of the standard is formed with a plurality of spaced recesses, one set of which is shown at 24, and engaging one opposite pair of these recesses is a U shaped rod 25 having inturned ends 26-27 engaging in the recesses, the rod being sufficiently yieldable to enable its sides to be separated to change the ends 26-27 from one pair of the recesses 24 to the other, and thus adjust the U shaped member vertically upon the standard.
Bearing over the U shaped member is a link 28, the link about equal in length to the spread of the U sha ed member adjacent to the standard, the sides of the U shaped member converging toward the outer or bight portion so that by moving the link 2S over the sides of the U shaped member toward the standard, the sides will be compressed and rigidly held in engagement with the standard. By this means the U shaped member will be locked in position upon the standard, but free to swing vertically at its bight portion upon the standard, and by loosening the link 28 or moving it toward the narrower end of the U shaped member, the sides of the latter may be distended to adjust the inturned ends 26-27 at a higher or lower point upon the standard, by insert ing them into a higher or lower pair of the recesses 24.
The operating lever portion of the device is represented as a whole at 29, and will be of any suitable length to secure the proper leverage, and is reduced in width at 30 where it passes through the longitudinal opening in the standard, and extending through the reduced portion of the lever is' a pin 31 having a shoulder 32 bearing against one side of the reduced portion 30 and with a threaded portion 33 at the opposite sides of the reduced portion and provided with a clamp nut 34. By this means the pin 31 is firmly connected to the lever as shown, the ends of the pin adapted to fit into one opposite pair of the sockets 22-23 in the cheek plates, the object to be hereinafter explained.
rlhe reduced portion 30 of the lever 29 is provided with a metal binder member 35 extending around its forward end and secured to the body of the lever by rivets 36 or other 'fastening means. Riveted or otherwise secured to the side faces of the forward end of the reduced portion 30 are cheek blocks 37-38 which correspond in shape to the outer end of the lever, and thus extend its surface laterally forwardly of the standard. Attached to the sides of the portion of the lever 29 adjacent to the reduced portion 8() are reinforcing plates 39-40, the plates thus stiffening and strengthening the lever at the point where it will be liable to fracture. Attached to the upper face of the lever intermediate its ends is a plate 4l having spaced recesses or notches 42 into which the bight portion of the U shaped member 25 engages and thus serves as a brace or tie member to retain the lever in position as hereafter explained.
Vith a device thus constructed, the operation is as follows The standardand its base are disposed adjacent to the axle which is to be elevated and the rear or hand end of the lever thrust through the U shaped member above the link 28, and the reduced portion of the lever together withv the laterally enlarged portion 3738 is thrust through the opening in the standard and the rear or handle end of the lever elevated to bring the nose portion 37-38 of the lever beneath the axle and the pins 31 in the nearest pair of the sockets 22-23. This arrangement disposes the bight portion of the U shaped member 25 above the lever, and when the free end of the lever is depressed and the axle of the vehicle together with the running gear carried by it elevated by the shorter end of the lever, the bight portion of the U shaped member 25 will engage in one of the notches 42, and thus support the longer portion of the lever in position and retain the shorter end elevated together with the axle and running gear bearing thereon.
When the wheel has been lubricated or otherwise disposed in position to be returned to the ground, the rear end of the lever is slightly depressed to release the bight of the U shaped member 25 from the notch with which it is engaged and the U shaped member elevated, which will permit the longer end of the lever also to be elevated and thus restore the axle and the wheels to their vformer position.

wplate having a plurality of spaced notches carried by said lever near its longer end, a brace memberformed from a rod bent into U shape and with inturned terminals adapted to be engaged with one opposite pair of said standard recesses and through which the longer end of the lever extends, and engaging therewith by said notched plate and a link slidably disposed upon said brace member, the bight portion of said U shaped member adapted to engage with the longer end of the lever.
2. A. wagon jack comprising a standard formed of spaced side members provided with a plurality of recesses, an upper spacer member and a lower spacer member, a base member connected to said standard, cheek plates connected to the confronting faces of said side members between the spacer members and each provided with a plurality of spaced sockets, a lever extending between the cheek plates, a fulcrum pin carried by said lever and adapted to be alternately engaged with the sockets of said cheek plates, a plate connected to said lever intermediate its ends and provided with a plurality of spaced transverse notches, plates connected tothe opposite sides of the shorter end of said lever and forming a laterally extending nose theren to, a brace member formed from a single rod bent into U shape and with its ends inturned for engagement with one opposite pair ofthe recesses of said side members, a link slidable over said brace member and adapted to prevent the displacement of said inturned members, the bight portion of said brace member adapted to engage in one of the notches of said plate.
3. A wagon jack comprising a standard having a supporting base and with a longitudinal transverse opening, cheek plates within said opening and provided with spaced oppositely disposed sockets, said standard having spaced recesses, a lever having a reduced portion near one end and eX- tending by the reduced portion through said opening and between the cheek plates, a fulcrum pin carried by the reduced portion of said lever and adapted for alternate engagement with the sockets of the cheek plates, plates connected to the opposite sides of the shorter end of said lever and forming a laterally extending nose thereto, a plate carried by said lever intermediate its ends and provided with spaced transverse notches, reinforcing plates connected to the side faces of said lever, a strap bearing over the nose end of said lever and extending rearwardly along its upper and lower sides and secured thereto, a brace device comprising a rod bent into U shape and with inturned ends engaging in one opposite pair of said recesses, and a link slidable over said U shaped brace member, the bight portion of said brace member adapted to engage in one of the notches of the lever.
