Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES W. REIN- OEHL and BENT L. WEAVER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Steelton, Dauphin county, State of- Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad Structures, of which the following is a full,v clear, and exact description,'referenoe being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide, in a railroad structure, a simple, durable, and eflicient means whereby rail sections may be firmlysecured together, and to other parts, Without liability of the various parts of the structure. working loose.
To this end the invention consists in the several novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :--Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion f a railroad frog or crossing embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section as on the line 3.3, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the securing bolts.
In the drawings, we have shown our invention applied to a railroad frog orcrossing, wherein rail sections are secured. together and to other parts. In this construction, 1 and 2 are the stock rails, and 4, the point of the frog. The stock rails are of usual construction, each comprising a head 5, a base 6, and a vertical'web 7 extending between the head and base. Usually in frogs of this character, the stock rails l and -2 first converge towardthe point 4 of the frog and then diverge forming the wing portions, 4, which extend laterally of the frog point, as shown in the drawings; and in this t pe of crossing a hard metal piece 8 is usual y inserted between the stock rails, which piece 8 extends into on agement with the head portions '5 and web portions 7 of the rails 1 and 2, a groove or passageway being formed in the piece 8 for the car wheel flanges. Extending from the webs 7 and the hard metal insert piece 8 are bolts 9. One end of each bolt 9 is screw-threaded for the reception of a nut 10, and the other end of each bolt 9 is provided with an integral head 11,
which is arranged between the head 5 and base 6 of the adjacent rail section The di-- mensions of the head 11 transversely of the bolt 9 are sufficient to cause the bolt head to engage either the rail head 5 or base 6, or both, and prevent the turning of the bolt 9.
In the resent embodiment of our invention, the ead 11 is elongated vertically, so that the'top of the head 11 will engage the rail head 5, and the bottom of the head 11 will engage the rail base 6, and thus prevent the turning of the bolt.
When the rail section is arran ed at an angle other than a right angle wit relation to the securing bolt, we make the inner face of the bolt head 11 at an angle with respectv to the bolt to correspond with the angle of the rail section, to secure the roper engagement of the bolt head 11 with t e web 7 of the rail section. This feature, together with the-feature which prevents the turning of the bolt,
, obviates the necessity for the employment of a Washer between the, head of the bolt and the rail section, where the rail section is arranged at an angle other than a right angle withrelation to the bolt; for the reason that when the bolt head 11 is permitted toturn between the rail head 5 and rail base 6,, it. is necessary to em loy, between-the bolt head 11 and the rail we 7, a separate washer having an angular inner face fitting the an he of the rail section and an outer face at rig t a has to the bolt, against which outer face the it head may turn. If no washer be employed, and if the angular face engaging the rail web be formed on the bolt head, and the head is permitted to turn, the'bolt head would be liable to turn and move its face out of proper engagement with the rail web, and thus defeat its object.
In each instancewhere the bolts 9 extend through the rails 1 and 2 at points where the rails 1 and 2 converge or diverge with relation to each other and are not parallel to each other, or substantially so, we insert betweenthe nut 10 and the adj acent rail web 7 a washer 12 having an inner face fitted to the face of the rail web, and an outer face at right angles to the bolt 9; and between the washer 12 and the nut 10 is the usual split washer nut-lock 13. Where the bolts 9 extend through the rails 1 and 2 at points where the rails are parallel to each other, or substantially so, the washers 12 may be dis.-'
pensed with, in which event only the split washer nut-locks 13 will be present between the nuts 10 and the adjacent rail webs.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

In a railroad structure, the combination of a'rail section having a vertical web and laterally extending parts, a part to which said rail section is secured, and a securing bolt extending through the webof saidrail section and said part, said bolt havingan integral head extending transversely of the bolt 'sufliciently to cause said head to engage one of said laterally extending rail parts and revent the turning of the bolt,-

In a railroad structure, the combinationof a rail section having a vertical web, a head and a base, a part to which said rail section is secured, and a securing bolt extending through the web of said rail section and said part, said bolt havin an integral head arranged between the rail ead and the rail base, and extending transversely of the bolt sufiiciently to cause said bolt head to engage said rail head and said base and-prevent the turning of the bolt, substantially as described. o
3. In a railroad structure, the combination of a rail section having a vertical web, a head and a base, a part to which said rail section is secured, a securing bolt extendin through the web of said rail section an said part said bolt having an integral head elongated vertically sufiiciently to cause it to engage said rail head and said base and prevent the turning of the bolt, substan- 'tially as described.
4. In a raiIroad structure, the combination of a rail section having a vertical web and laterally extending parts, a part to which said. rail section is secured, and a securing bolt extending through the web of said rail section and said part at an angle vbeing at an angle other than a other than a right an le with relation to said rail section, said be t having an inte ral head extending transversely of the olt sufficiently to cause said head to engage .one of said laterally extending rail parts and grevent the turning of the bolt, the inner ace of said bolt head being at an angle other than a right angle with relation to the bolt and fitting the angle of said rail section, substantially as described.
5. In a railroad structure, the combination of a rail section having a vertical web, a head and a base, a part to which said rail section is secured, a securing bolt extendin through the web of said rail section and said part at an angle other than a right angle with relation to said railsection, said bolt having an integral head elongated verticall sufficiently to cause it to engage said rail head and said base and prevent the tu of the bolt, the inner face of said bolt head right angle with relation to the bolt and fitt' the angle of said rail section, substantia y as described.
