Description

L. G. LEWIS.
'GHURN.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 25, 1908.

60011? 6 Zea/1'6 STATES PATENT LEWIS O. LEWIS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE H. MARTING, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
GHURN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Application filed July 25, 1908. Serial No. M5328.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwis G. Lewis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of churns of that class in which a rotary dasher is employed.
The objects of my invention are to provide an improved churn construction of this class wherein is provided improved means for imparting to the cream contained in the churn, the desired butter producing agitation; to so construct and operate said agitating means as to insure the production of butter in a comparatively short time and to produce other improvements in details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved churn showing the operating means in elevation, Fig. 2 is a view in elevation taken at right angles with the view shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a plan View, and, Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a suitable horizontal supporting base 1 upon which is mounted a vertical cylindrical churn casing 2, the latter being provided with a detachable cover or lid 3 which has its central portion of a substantially conical form and which has its mar inal portion formed with an angularliange 3 to engage the upper side of the reinforced top rim 2 of the case 2. The center of the lid 3 has formed therein a vertical opening from about which extends downwardly a short bearing projection 3 With the bottom of the casing 2, I form an upwardly projecting lug or boss 4 which is adapted to engage a corresponding opening in a removable internal bottom plate or disk 5 which fits within the casing. This bottom plate is formed with a central upwardly projecting bearing boss 5" having a bearing opening therethrough, as shown. With the upper side of the marginal portion of the bottom plate 5 are formed or connected vertical blades 6, the latter being arranged radially at suitable intervals one from the other.
7 represents a vertical dasher shaft which passes downward through the opening of the lid bearing 3 and has its lower reduced end pivoted in the opening of the central bearing boss 5 of the plate 5. I11 its lower portion the shaft 7 carries a rotary dasher which con1- prises upper and lower disk-like plates 8 and 9 between which are secured at suitable intervals one from the other, radially arranged vertical blades 10. The dasher thus formed is of such circumference as to permit of a free rotary movement within the space which is formed between the inner vertical edges of the fixed blades 6. It will also be observed that said dasher is of somewhat greater height than said fixed blades.
In order to impart a rotary movement to the dasher shaft, I provide the upper end of said shaft above the casing with a bevel pinion wheel 11, which meshes with a bevel wheel 12 carried on one end of a horizontal shaft 13, the latter being mounted in a suit-' able vertical framework 14. Between the standards of the framework l t the shaft 13 carries a comparatively large flywheel 15 and a pinion gear wheel 16, the teeth of the latter meshing with those of a comparatively large gear wheel 17 which is mounted on a crank shaft 18 below the fly wheel, said crank shaft being in turn journalcd in the framework 14 and carrying on its outer end a suitable crank or o crating handle 19.
In operation, it will be understood that by rotating the crank shaft 18, rotary motion is imparted to the dasher shaft through the medium of the gear wheels 17 and 16, shaft 13 and bevel gear wheels 11 and 12.
The churn case 2 being filled to a desirable height with cream, and a rapid rotary motion being imparted to the rotary dasher, it is obvious that a rapid whirling or rotary current will be imparted to the cream, which will be broken at short intervals by contact with the fixed blades 6 against which the cream will be constantly thrown in its centrifugal movement. By the rapid breaking of the cream currents and the constant agitation of the cream, it is obvious that the operation described must result in an e1 ceedingly rapid formation of butter withln the casing.
For the purpose of removing the butter or cleaning the churn, it will be understood that the churn may be moved to one side until its pinion is out of engagement With the Wheel 12 and its lid has clearedthe latter, after which the lid, dasher carrying shaft and movable plate 5 may be lifted from the casing.
What I claim, is:
In a churn, the combination with a vertical casing having a lug projecting from its bottom plate, a freely removable internal bottom plate 5 havin an opening therein engaging said lug, and blades projecting upwardly from the marginal portion of said internal bottom plate, of a lid for said casing,
a central dasher shaft journaled in said lid, a dasher mounted on said shaft and comprising upper and lower horizontal plates and intermediate vertical blades arranged radially, said dasher adapted to be rotated Within the space bounded by the inner edges of said fixed blades, and means for imparting a rapid rotary motion to said shaft.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
