JAMES EUssELL WARREN AND GEORGE WESTERN PACKARD, 1a., OF DEADWOOD, SOUTH DAKOTA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES RUSSELL WARREN and GEORGE WEsTERN PAOKARD, J r., citizens of the United States, and residents of Deadwood, in the county of Lawrence and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Im rovcd Advertising Device, of which the ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The inve tion relates to advertising dethe tumbling panels acobs adder, and its object is to rovide a new and improved advertising evice arranged to allow viewing the signs from both sides and to display four different legends on each sign, thus increasing the capacity of the advertising device without increasing the bulk thereof.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is re resented in the accompanying drawings forming a art of this specification, in whichsimilar c aracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement; Fig. 2 is a transverse front section of the same on the line 22 of Fi 3; Fig. 3 is a sectional front elevation O the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is an enlarged rear view of the two uppermost signs; Fig. 5 is a like view of the same in a reverse position; Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross section of the uppermost sign, the section being on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4, Fig. 7 is a sectional view of one of the signs, the section being on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of t 1e si s.
In a suitabl constructed casing or ame A is journals a rock shaft B, to which is attached the up ermost sign block C of a Jacobs ladder 1 havin a suitable number of sign blocks C C C supported one below the other by suitable bands C", so that when the shaft B is alternately rocked the distance of half a revolution forward and backward, then the blocks are tumbled in the usual manner, as is well known inthe construction of J acobs ladders as heretofore used. Each of the blocks C, G G, C, C is rovided with letters or other suitable indicating characters D and the front and rear faces of the bands C are provided with known as letters E and E adalpted to. be complementary with ,the letters on the corresponding blocks, so as to produce a complete legend on each face of each sign. For the ur ose mentioned, the two bands C for eac b ock are together approximately of a width corresponding to one-half the width of a block 7 C, C, C, O, G, and the said bands are alternately near theedges of the blocks and then at the middle thereof, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5. N ow as each band has letters at both the front and rear faces thereof, and each band covers up a letter or character on the corresponding block, some of the letters on the block as well as the letters on the back face ofthe bands on this block are hidden from View, still a complete legend appears visible to the eye. Thus by'reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the second block from the top shows the legend Corn at the front, and the legend Lard at the back (see Fig. 4), and when a half revolution is given to the shaft B and consequently to the first block C,
then the blocks are reversed and the second Pork, as shown in Fig. 3, and the legend. The best at the back, as illustrated in Fig. 5. Thus each block forms a complete sign in itself having four different legends, of which two are displayed alternately at the front face of the advertising device and two at the rear face thereof.
In order to impart the desired rocking motion to the shaft B the following construction is provided: On the shaft B within the casing or frame A is secured a pinion F engaged by a rack F pivotally connected with a crank G journaled in the casing or frame A and carrying a pinion H connected by a train of gear wheels H with a spring. barrel I of any approved construction, so that a continuous rotary motion is given to the pinion H and crank G, to cause the rack F to alternately turn the pinion F and consequently the shaft B forward and backward, for tumbling the blocks of the J acobs ladder G, as above explained. Other suitable mechanism may be employed for alternating the half-turn rocking motions in opposite directions to the shaft B, as above explained.
[he blocks are connected to other in the following manner. The first lock, Fig. 8,
is connected by four bands with the second block, two of said bands being secured to the front face of the first block near the upper end thereof, passing over said upper end and around the back of said first block to the front face of the second block being secured near the upper end thereof. The other two bands are secured to the same face of the first block but at the lower end and near the edges of the block, and passing directly behind the secondblock are secured in corresponding positions on the front face of the second block. The second block is connected with the third block by means of two bands, the bands being secured to the lower edge of the rear face of the second block at the center thereof, and extending down the front of the third block to the bac of the said third block and being secured in a position corresponding to their olnt of attachment to the second block. T e third block is secured to the fourth block in the same manner as the first block is secured to the second block, and the fourth block is secured to the fifth block in the same manner as the second block is secured to the third block.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An advertising device provided with a Jacobs ladder having tumbling blocks provided on each face with indicating characters, and bands supporting the blocks one 1 above the other, the bands having indicating characters on both faces.
device provided with a Jacobs ladder avlng tumbling blocks provided on each face with indicating characters, and bands su porting the blocks one above the other, the ands having indicating characters on both faces, the indicating charmeters on the said blocks and the indicating characters on the said bands being complementary.
.4. An advertising device comprising a. power driven rocking mechanism, and a J acobs ladder having tumbling blocks and bands for supporting the blocks one above the other, the u permost block being attached to a rock shait ofthe said rocking mechanism and the said blocks and bands' being provided on each face with indicating characters, the characters on the said blocks and bands being complementary.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
