Description

R. W. McCLELLAND.
Carriage Wheel. No. 91,859. Patented June 29, 1869.

' Letters Patent-N0. 91,859, elated June 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-WHEELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
the spokes G, whereby the tenons F are made muclr smaller than in other wheels, and consequently the mortise in the felloe is smaller, and the feline is thus less liable to split. This is done by constructing a shoulder in the spoke, at the base of the tenon, with a greater depression at the centre than upon the edge, and a corresponding shoulder in the felloe, to fit into Bythis-arrangement the strain is taken off the tenon and put upon the fullsized spoke.
Second, in this improved wheel, I only use half the number of inortises as in the one heretofore patented; for I so construct my spokes, by tenoning them only on one side, so that one mortise will receive two spokes, as is shown in Figures 1 and 3. By this arrangement the wooden centre-piece A of the hub is not so cut up, and is consequently stronger.
I also construct the wooden centre-piece A longer than in the wheel heretofore patented, and do away entirely with the metal cap which is fitted to it, and substitute for it the twodisks B B, which fit directly upon the wooden centre-piece A, and which are fastened securely and tightly to it, by means of bolts, running lengthwise through the centre-piece A and disks B, and fastened by screw-nuts at the points I I.
D, in Figure 4, is the point-band, which is screwed on to the front disk B, and is so shaped, in connection with the disk B, to which it is screwed, as to give it the form .of an ordinary wooden hub.
In my wheel heretofore patented, the point-band is screwed upon the box, which had to be made specially for the huh. I can use any common box in this huh.
I also construct the butt-disk B with an inside flange, E, which presses up close to the wooden centre-pieee A, and serves to protect it and prevent it from being cut away by the box if it should happen to get loose. This arrangement of the butt-disk also increases the firmness of the wooden centre-piece.
The advantage to be gained by this improved wheel is as follows, to wit:
Whenever it is necessary to make repairs, the disks can be more readily taken off, and whenever a spoke is broken, it can more easily be taken out and a new one inserted. Now,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The butt-disk B, provided with the" inside flange E, pressing against the wooden centre A, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.
2. The within-described hub, consisting of the wooden centre A, butt-disk B, with its inside flange E, facedisk B, and point--band 9, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose shown.
