UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IPETER GOSSLINE, OF BAGLEY, MINNESOTA.
SLE IGH-KNEE To all whom 'it may concern:
-Be it known that I, PETER GossLiNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bagley, in the county of Clearwater and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Sleigh-Knees, of which the fol owing is a specification.
This invention relates to sleigh knees and one of the princi al objects of the invention is to provi e a s eigh knee which will work freely, which is strong, durable and efficient and 1n which there are but few bolts needed in securing the parts in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sleigh knee which will work smoothly and efficiently with heavy loads and in which owing to the comparatively few bolts used, will not weaken the parts and thus render the device less liable to split the runners in passing over rough roads.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sleigh provided with knees made in accordance with my invention, `Fig. 2 is a detail front elevation of one of the knees and showing a runner in section, Fig. 3 is a vertical section throu h the cross bar and bearing block connecte thereto, Ii'ig. 4 is a detail perspective view illustrating one of the cross bars and the bearing block detached therefrom, Iig. 5 is a central vertical section through the parts illustrated in Iiig. 4, Ii ig. 6 is a perspective vlilew of the bearing detached from the sleigh s oe.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the runners of the sleigh connected in front by a cross bar 2. These runners may be made of the usual or any suitable construction. Secured to each runner is a bearing consisting of the two spaced lugs 3 which straddle the upper edge of the runner and are secured thereto by means of a single bolt 4. Formedupon the upper portion of the bearing are the inwardly extending members 5 each having an under cut portion 6 and extending lips 7. Bolts 8 extend through the bearing vertically into the runner 1.
The bearing block 9 is provided with a rounded lower' face having oppositely disposed stop fianges 10, one at each end, and at the up er side a longitudinal groove 11. The cross ar 12 at its opposite ends is provided With a. reduced portion 13 which iits Specicaton of Letters Patent.

in the groove 11 of the bearing block and is provided at its opposite sides and ends with fastening lugs 14. A cap plate 15 provided with a groove 16 in its under face is fitted over t-he top of the reduced portion 13 of the cross bar 12 and bolts 17 extend through the bolt holes 18 in the bearing block, through the holes 20 in the cap 15, the heads of said bolts being disposed in the bearing block 9 and nuts 21 being applied to the upper ends of the bolts.
The bolster 22 is pivoted upon the bolt 28 which is spaced from the cross bar 12 by means of a bearing plate 24.
From the foregoing it will be obvious with a sleigh knee made in accordance with my invention is permitted a limited rocking movement, such as is necessary in hauling loads over rough roads; that the construction is simple and at the same time strong, durable and eflicient for its purpose.
I claim 1. A sleigh knee comprising a bearing secured to each runner and provided with inwardly extending lips, a cross bar having a reduced portion and fastening lugs, a bearing block provided with a rounded under surface and oppositely disposed stop lugs, a cap 'fitted to the up er side of the reduced portion of the cross ar and bolts extending through the bearing block, lugs and cap.
2. A sleigh knee comprising a bearing having oppositely spaced lugs for straddling the sleigh runner and inwardly extending lips, a bearing block fitted into the bearing, a cross bar fitted into the bearing block, a cap fitted onto the cross bar, and a series of bolts extending through the bearing block, cross bar and cap.
3. In a sleigh knee the combination of a bearing secured to the sleigh runner and provided with a rounded portion with inwardly extending lips and recesses under the lips, a bearing block having a rounded under surface, oppositely disposed lugs and a longitudinal groove, a cross bar fitted in the bearing block, Va cap iitted to the cross bar and a series of bolts for securing the parts in place.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER GOSSLINE.
