Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDRE OLinn, civil engineer, citizen of France, residing at Usines St. Remy, Rue Amadeo, Clermont-Ferrand,
Improvements in Machines for Beveling A ir- Tubesfor Pneumatic Tires, of which the following is a specification.
With the machines usually employed for beveling air tubes for pneumatic tires, it was heretofore necessary to cut one of the ends, then to turn the tube inside out in order to cut the other end; this resulted in diffieulties waste and great loss of time on the other hand the grinding of the face opposite to that of the beveling was not possible.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine for the beveling of air tubes for pneumatic tires used in velocipedes, motor cycles," and vehicles, which shall do away with all these inconveniences. It allows besides, through an arrangement of nose and counter-nose rotating at the same speed, to bevel the two ends of the air tubes without their being turned inside out and at the same time to grind the faces opposed to that of the bevel. It furthermore allows through the arrangement of an angle knife, to obtain very long bevels.
The accompanying drawings represent a form of construction of the machine.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 is a partial lan, Fig. 3 is a cross section online AB of Fig. '1. Figs. 4 to 7 are demonstrative views of the work done by the machine. Fig. 8 is a cross section of the casing carryin the air tubes. Fig. 9 is a detail view of the Tooking device of the door of said casing. Figs. 10 and 11 are detail views of a support oi an operating gear. Fig. 12 is a sectional view showing the bayonet joint which holds the Fig. 13 is a sectional view and Fig. 14 a plan view showing the adjusting means of the car carrying the cutting tool.
The beveling machine first comprises essentially a casing a, adapted to carry the air tube and having a large opening a for the easy insertion of the tubes, such opening bein closed by a sliding door 6 provided with a ho t b. Such casing a is mounted on the end of a shaft 0 which rests on two bearings (Z and is supported at the front by an arrangement provi ed with three rollers e which insures correct centering;
said casing carries on its which is mounted therein by a bayonet joint as seen in Fig. 12. Opposite is arranged another shaft supported on bearings ll. and a sijpport i, which has a special purpose hereinaiter described; the shaft g is adapted on its end facing the casing, to receive, through a bayonet joint a part called a counter-nese j, lined with hardened rubber. The nosej'and counter-nose j are of diameters which correspond to the air tube to be beveled. The two sha'lts c and g are driven by two similar pains of gears 7c, from the same controlling shaft Z which receives its motion through a lined and loose pulley m or through any other means, electric motor or otherwise, and is supported on the three brackets 'a rigidly connected together and carrying the table 0. hen the control is effected by pulleys, a release lever p is provided at the reach of the operator.
The table 0 on the front side oi the casing a is arranged so as to receive a car r adapted to carry the cutting tool. This car is provided with a pivot g adapted to move crosswise in a slot q and to be secured in position by means 01' a fastening nut (1 The cutting tool is an angle knife tniounted on a handle 8 adapted to slide on the car. Two adjustable abutments a limit the slant of the tool in regard to the tube to be beveled; they may be displaced in the cross slots at a of the table and secured in position by fastening nuts 1& 14 The shaft 9 carrying the counter-nose is arranged at its front so as to allow 01' its longitudinal displacement, through the medium ol a hand lever 12 pivoted at a fixed point of the table.
In order to allow 01' the displacement of the shaft 9, the pinion of the train oi gears kis provided with a sleeve which bears in the support 11 against a threaded ring '20 preventing all lateral displacement.
The operation oi the machine is as follows :The air tube after having been flattened is wound on itself and inserted into the casing a through its opening one of its ends is brought outside through the inside oi the nose-piece f and is mounted on the counter nose j which is moved toward it by means of front part a hollow portion called a nose j the lever 12, until it is pressed close against the inner surface of the nose. The sliding door of the casing a being closed, the cross position of the car 7" is then adjusted, so that the axis of the pivot coincidcs with the projection of the part to be out. This adjustment is obtained by causing the pivot g to slide on its slot (1 to the position required and by fixing it then in said position by the fastening nut 9 The machine is then started. By slanting the car to the left or right, the air tube is beveled either upward (Fig. 5) or downward (Fig. 6); on these figures, shows the cutaway portion and y the bevel. For one air tube, one of the ends is beveled according to the first form, and the other according to the second, the aim being to obtain the closure shown in Fig. It is necessary to grind the tube with eniery cloth, on the side opposite to that ol' the beveling. This grin is done by hand. In the case shown in 6, the face to be ground being face 1, the grinding is effected on the counter nose; in the case of Fig. 5, the face to be ground being face 2, it will be effected by turning over the end of the tube over the rim of the nose, as shown in Fig. 7.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent is l. A machine for beveling air tubes for pneumatic tires comprising a casing a adapted to carry the air tubes, a shaft 0 011 which is mounted said casing, a hollow nose-piece f mounted on the iront part of the casing, a counter-nosepiece j adapted to engage the nose piecef, a shaft 9 on which is mounted the counter-nose-piece, means for causing longitudinal displacement of the shaft g, means for securing in position said shaft, means for transmitting to both shafts c and g the same rotary motion, a slide pivoted on the frame of the machine and movable crosswise, car 1 movable in the slide, and angleknife t mounted on the car, and adjustable abutments u adapted to limit the slant of the knife, substantially as described and for the purpose set 'forth.

A machine for beveling air tubes for pneumatic tires comprising a casing a adapted to carry the air tubes and provided with an opening, a sliding door b capable of being locked on said opening, a shaft 0 on which is mounted the casing, an arrangement provided with three rollers 6 adapted to support at the front the casing and to center it, a hollow nose-piece f mounted on the front part of the casing by a bayonet joint, a counter-ncse-piece adapted to engage the nosepiece f, a shai't g on which is mounted by a bayonet joint the counter-nose-piece, a lever 21 pivoted on the frame and adapted to move longitudinally the shaft 9, two similar gear trains is adapted to transmit a rotary motion to the shafts c and 9, means for driving said gear trains, a sleeve provided on the gear is to which is connected shaft 9, a support i, a threaded ring w against which bears the sleeve, a slide pivoted on the frame of the machine and movable crosswise, a car 7 movable in the slide, angle-knife 25 mounted on the car, and adjustable abutinents u adapted to limit the slant of the knife substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
