Letters Patent'No. 91,789, dated Ttme 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN THILL-COUPLINGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making 'part of the same,
exact description thereof, which will enable thoseV skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part 'of this specification, which drawing represents a longitudinal section of this invention.
This invention consistsV in the arrangement of a hook, secured to a metallic exible base, and enclosed in a pocket or envelope of leather, filled with a soft Indiarubber pad, or studing, in combination with a goose-neck, provided with a loop, which catches in the hook, and'with a strap, which extends from the envelope, and serves to fasten the shaft-coupling to the axle ot' a carriage, or vehicle, iu sucha manner thata simple and cheap coupling is obtained, which is free from rattling, and which can he attached and detached with great ease and facility.
The letter A designatesa hook, which is secured in the metallic base-plate B, from which extends a exible shank, a, both the hook and base-plate being enclosed in a pocket, or envelope, G, of leather, or other suitable material.
D is the goose-neck, which is provided with holes, for the purpose of attaching it to the inner end of the shaft, and with a loop, b, which catches into the hook A, as shown in the drawing.
The envelope C isfilled up with a stuing, E, of soft India-rubber, or other suitable material, in which the hook and the inner looped end of the goose-neck `are embedded, so that all rattling of these parts is prevented.
From the 4opposite ends of said envelope extend two i straps, F F', one of which is provided with abuckle, c, while the other is long enough to be carriedonce or twice round the axle of a carriage, or ,other lvehicle,
' and to be secured in the buckle, as shown.
In carrying the strap F round the axle, the flexible shank of the base-plate B is bent over said axle, and
. gives an additional hold to the hook and goose-neck.
By these means a shaft-coupling is obtained, which can he readily attached to or detached from axles of any'size, which is cheap and simple in its construction, and free from all rattling.
A small strap or staple, secured in the upper and back part of the axle-bed, prevents the coupling from shifting sideways. v
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv A shaft-coupling, composed of a hook, A, and looped goose-neck D, in combination with the envelope C, stufiing E, and straps F 1*",allconstructed and operating Vsubstantially as shown and described. Y
