' %lnitd JOHN HORTON,OF ROCHESTER, NEW-YORK.-
Letters Patent No. 91,636, dated June 22, 1869.
IMPRQVED roman-Anon FOR BLAST-FURNACES.
The Schedule mama to in mm Letters Patent ma. making part of m Me.
To all whom it may cmwern'i Be it known that I, J OHN HORTON, of Rochester,
Monroe county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Mode of Protecting the Tuyeres and Surrounding Walls of a Blast-Furnace from the Action of the Fires; and I do hereby'declare the following to be a. full and exact description thereof, ref-- erencebeing had to the eccompan'y ng drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon; r
The drawing is a perspective view, exposing the water-pipes on the bottom and right-hand sides.
My 'watentuyei'e arch is made of acast-iron shell, A, which is moulded in the desired form by a pattern, so constructed that a. coil of iron pipe, 11, maybe placed in the mould, and the metal poured around it in it solid mass.
It may be shaped in any form best suited to the object, which is the protection ofthe t'uyere and walls surrounding it from burning.
it is placed in the walls of the furnace just over the tuyere, the arch being of suflicient size to receive the tuyere and allow space for the packing, as usual;
The coils-of water-pipe protrude through the arch, at both ends, one being for theinlet, and the other for outlet, and by means of connecting them-with other pipes, a, supply of cold water is constantly to be pa.ss-
ing through them, the coils being of u zigzag form, and
following the general shape of the water-arch and bed-- plate 0;
Much trouble and expense are met with in protecting-the tuyeres'and \mlls of'the iuyere-arch in blastfurnaces, as now constructed, from the eifects oi the severe fires necessary to the business.
The tuyeres and walls are constantly burning away, causing much delay for their repairs, which will be very greatly overcome by my improvement.
Claim.
What I claim'las my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The \vot-er-tuyere arch, or its equivalent, surroundeing the tuyere of a blast-furnace, when constructed substentially'as described, and for the purposes specified.
