`Figure 1 is. an axial section of a pump embodying f my invention .and provided with a Ysteam engine vfor operating the same;.Fig. 42 .is a section online 2-201' Fig. 1, and Fig lan elevation zof the ypump, .mechanically driven.
In .the drawings, indicatesapump cylinder having a ,piston 111 .mounted therein, therod 12 .oil saidpiston extending through the heads of the cylinder, through desirable Arranged Yin :alinement With cylinder 10'is a smaller cylinder .14.having apiston15carried`by the extended rod 12. The cylinder Y1;1.is.provided .with suitable inlet'valves 16 Whichcommunicate with a pipe ,17 .leadingfrom the .Water tank, and with suitable outlet valves .18 Whichlead .to an eduction pipe 19. to the eduction pipe 28 which leads to the boiler.
steam engine 30, as shown in Fig. 1. the piston rod 12 is driven by the steam eni gine, as shown, I prefer to exhaust said engine through a pipe 31 which delivers to an aspirating nozzle 32 arranged in the Water supply pipe 17. The engine 30 may be driven by exhaust steam from the locomotive.
ASp.eclE-lcaton' of Letters Patent.
n 2 .the other .pump and placedtode The piston rod 12 may be reciprocat-ed by, means of an eccentric, Aor other mechanicall driving train, ormay'bedriven bymeans of ay Then Patented March.23, 11909.
In operation: reciprocation of thepiston rod 12 lWill cause piston '15 to draw Water from `pipe V17 .into cylinder :14 .and 'to 'dis- .clLarge the .same throughvalves 18 i. and Vpipe 19 tonozzles`21.and 22. 'The exhaust steam from y.theengineis delivered to chamber throughpipe26and a-.stream of Water Willv be directed by said nozzles against the inlet valves 23 and 2,4, Vand zacting against that valve .Whichis freeto bemoved'by reason of the particular direction of movement ofthe .piston'1.1, Will have an :aspiratingr eiiiect upon the exhaust steam in .chamber 25 and -Will draw said .exhaust steam .into cylinder '10 `lromtwhence `it is ejected through valves 27 to the boiler28. The exhauststeam from the Aengine is also saved 'by passing into Vthe Water streamgoing ithroughpipe `1'7.
In orderltoavoid the useoi' springs lepreiertoarrange.thepiston rod 12 vertically, as shown in the drawings, this arrangement making the aXes oi the various valves'vertical. lViththisfarrangement, and' in order to properly'equalize:the loW from the nozzles 21and22 I deem it advisable-to .make the nozzle21 somewhat smaller than .the nozzle 42.2.so that there will be a suihcientrestrietion .to produce anequaliiowirom the tWonozzles. .The Water cannot accumulate yin the .lowerpart o1 Vchamber2`5 to anygreat extent because-.it Willbe drawn in tothe cylinder 1() .by the action of piston 11. It Willbenoticed that, when the engine 30 is driven by exhaust steam, .no energy (beyond ythat used ordinarily)iis drawn Vfrom theiboiler andnthat there vis suchainixture oi'exhaust steam and vfeed- Waterthat theieed Water is'heate'd to a high degree before entering theboiler.
I claim as my invention:
