Description

tntrd, time @aient otitis.
MEXWORTH D. DRAKE, OF SCI'IUATE, A'SSIGNOR TO W. E. BAR- RETT, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Lettm's Patent No. 91,613, dated June 22, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
man-Connections for Harvesters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, .in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my im proved pitman-connection;
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal central section on the line B B, fig. l; and
Figure 3 represents a longitudinal section through the device shown in iig. 1, ou the line A A, lig..2.
To enableY those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs, to make and use the same, I will describe it'more in detail;
In the drawings- A represents the outer end of the pitman-rod, which is provided with. a head, B, which fits in' a recess in the inner part G of the connection D.
On top of head B is placed a metal strip, c, and on top of that is placed a bushing, or bearing E, composed of strips b of raw hide; said bushing or bearing-pieces being cut ont to fit the crank-pin F.
Another bearing, G, composed of strips of raw hide b, is fitted in the outer part H of the connection D, its inner face being cut out to fit the crank-pin F.
A metal strip, c, is placed between the bushing, or bearing-piece G and the part H, as fully shown inthe drawings.
. 'The parts C and H are provided with ear-pieces I I and .I J, for the reception ofthe screw-bolts K K, by means of which the parts C and H of the connection D are drawn closely together, thereby causing the bushings, or bearing-pieces E and G, to clasp the end of the crank-pin, as fully indicated in the drawings.
. The outer sides of the parts C and H are made with projections d, for the reception of the head L of the crank-pin F, as shown in g. 2.
It will be seen that the inner face of head L has a bearing against the ends ofthe raw-hide bushing, or bearing-pieces E G, so that the wearing parts of the crank-pin F work against the raw-hide bearing-pieces, thereby rendering the connection more durable, and less liable to wear than the ordinary connection in which the bearingparts of the connection are made of Babbit metal.
To prevent any rattle, and also to compensate for any wear of the crank-pin or theraw-hide pieces, a
' set-screw, M, having a. set-nut, O, is fitted to the stem N, whereby, when the set-screw M is screwed in, its point will press against the metal strip c, thereby forcing the bearing-piece G against the crank-pin F suiiiciently to prevent too much play betweenthe raw-hide pieces and the crank-pin.
After set-,screw M has been turned down far enough, set-nut O` is turned back against the stern N, thereby locking the screw securely in place.
The long thimble P, on the inner end of the part C, affords such a support to the outer end A of' the connecting-rod, as to prevent all binding or inj urioustwisting of the head in its socket.
The metal@ prevents head B from wearing the piece E of raw hide.
The pieces C and H of the connection D it together so closely that dust"and dirt are eiectua'lly excluded from the rubbing and bearing-parts of the bushing or crank-pin, thereby rendering the connection peculiarly adapted for use in harvesting-machines.
The raw-hide washer Q,npou the inner end of the crank-pin, as shown in iig. 2, prevents dust and dirt working in between the inner edges d of the parts C and H, and the crank-pin F.
Asit may be desirable to introduce some lubricatingsubstance occasionally, a screw, e, is fitted to the conncction D on aline with the space f, between the rawhide pieces E and G, as indicated in the' drawings,l whereby oil, or other lubricating-substances, can be turned in by simply removing screw e.
Great difficulties have arisen from the wearing and heating of the pitman-connections heretofore in use in harvesting-machines, and my present improvements are designed to obviate and remedy the same.
Having described my improved pitman-connection for harvesters,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the parts C and H, and means for holdingsaid parts together, ofthe raw-hide bearing-pieces E G, substantially as and for the pur-v poses set forth.
2. The combination, with the parts named in the preceding clause, of the metal pieces a and c, set-screw M, and set-nut O, substantially as and for thi'a purposes set forth.
Y MEXWORTH D. DRAKE. Witnesses:
WM. H. Gnnnnn, `J 01m H. S'rninss.
