Description

aient obtint.
JAMES M.-KEEP, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Lettercglatent No. 91,543, dated Tune 22, 1869; antedated .Tune 8, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it ma/y concern h ,Be it known that I, JAMESl BLKEEP, of lthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new i and useful Improvement in Combined Indicators and Registers, of that class used in hotels, oiiices, Ste., `which improvementI verily7 believe has not been known or used heretofore; the object of my invention being f to conveniently record the absence or presence of any person or persons belonging to the hotel, or oice, or
other place where it is desirable to keep a record of the same; and I do hereby declare that `the following is a clear, full, and exact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of these specifications.
Inthe drawingsv V Figure 1 represents my invention complete and ready for use, A A A being the indiators, and B, the name-register.
Figure 2 is the cross-section of the indicator.
,Figure 3 is what I call a super-indicator detached.
M yl invention consists ofe- First, what I term an indicator, which is a dial. l(See A, fig. l.) This dial isnumbered from 0 to 12, `representing twelve hours of the day, the same as an Iordinary watch or clock-dial, except the 0.
p Upon this dial is arranged a pointer, B, by which to designate any particular hour, or division of au hour.
- i This pointer is attached to and turned by means of the knob, or thumb-piece O.
y ,Underneath the dial is a super-indicator, one end of "which is attached to the shank or stem of the knob, while the other end is marked in. `(See g. 3.) When this super-indicator is attached to the knob, the word l in is directly under the pointer, and the two move in the same direction simultaneously.
The second part of my invention consists of a` combination, with the indicator, of any convenient'farrangefJ `ment for holding slips of paper, upon `whichthe name L of any person may be written. (See P, iig.4 1 Snitable and convenient devices for this purpose are now A i in general use, and are welladapted to-this arrangement, the one shown in the drawing being fa Style in general use in hotels, 85o., only that the name may be over or under as well as at the side of the indicator.
The opening in the dial-plate, shown at 0, should be nearest to the name. Directly under this opening is-the wrd out, or its initial 0, which can only be seen through the opening.
My combined indicator and register having been constructed, the indicator of sheet-metal and the register of wood, or other suitable material, and arranged as described, andthe upper end of the knobs being numbered, it is ready for use, its operation being as follows:
Mr. John Smith arrives at -a hotel, room No. 1 is assigned to him, and his name registered, as shown in the drawing, iig. l. The pointer is turned to between 12 and O. Now the word in, which is on the superindicatonappears thrugh the opening in the dialplate, indicating that Mr. Smith is in. (See fig. 1.)
Mr. Jones is ref {isteredl in room 2 in like manner, but leaves his room or hotel for a time, but does not know when he will return, 'lhe pointer is turned to 0. Now the word out appears through the opening, and it is not known at what time he will return, but the pointer being turned further along, it would announce his return at some particular' time; and so any number of naines may be registered, and their .presence, absence, and return indicated.
I 'am aware that dials with pointers have been used in oiices for purposes similar to those herein described. My invention diiers from all others in the combination -of the numbered knob, the pointer, and the superindicator, all of which form one device, and the combina'tion of this device with the register, constitutes my combined indicator and register.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of the numbered knob, pointer, dial, and super-indicator, constructed and operating as described.
