To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, WILLIAM HAGSTROM, EMANUEL HAGs'rRoM, and GUs'rAF HAG- STROM, citizens of the United States, residing at Lindsborg, in the count and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Lamp-Cord Adjusters, of whic the following is a specification.
The present invention aims to provide an im roved support for incandescent electric li ts and relates more particularly to means 'w liereby the suspending cord may be easily and quickly ad usted with regard to its length.
The invention resides princi ally in the provision of a spring actuated reel upon which the suspending cord is designed to be wound, nove means being provided for mounting the reel and controlling the movements thereof.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cord adjusting device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view showin the mounting of the spring, portions eing broken away.
Corresponding and like arts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The invention may be applied to any of the conventional types of cords employed for suspending electric lights such as that indicated at 1, the said cord being provided at one end with the usual plug 2 and at the opposlte end with a socket 3 within which an incandescent light can be secured in the usual manner. The reel 4 is formed with a transverse opening 5 through which the cord 1 is passed and is mounted between the opposite side pieces 6 of a frame carried by the cord 1. These side pieces 6 are in the nature of disks, being approximatel circular in sha e and are provided upon tieir opposite si es wlth the extensions 7, the said extensions being deflected inwardly and each air of the extensions being connected by a block 8 of vulcanite or other similar material. These of McPherson formed with corresponding upper and blocks 8 are perforatedas indicated at 9 to receive the cord 1 and serve as guides for the latter when being wound upon the reel or unwound therefrom. Ashaft 10 is journaled in the side ieces 6 of the frame andhas the reel 4 ke ed thereon or otherwise made rigid therewit the extremities of the shaft projecting beyond the side pieces of the frame. Ap lied to one of the outwardly projecting en s'of the shaft 10 is a ratchet wheel 11 designed to be engaged by a pawl 12 ivotally mounted upon the edge portion of t e corresponding side piece 6, one of the ends of the pawl pro'ecting beyond the edge of the side piece to orm a finger lever for manipulating the pawl. This pawl 12 is normally held in engagement with the ratchet 11 by means of a spring 13 having the extremities thereof connected to projections upon the pawl and side piece respectively. A casing is applied to the opposite side piece 6 of the frame and comprises a plate 14 spaced from the side piece and provided at its periphery with in wardly extending ton ues 15 on aging the side piece, a portion of t e tongues aving the extremities deflected outwardly and rigidly connected to the plate.
The reel 4 is actuated by a flat spiral spring 16 housed between the plate 14 andcorresponding side piece 6 of the frame, one of the extremities of the spring being connected to the shaft 10 while the 0 posite extremity is connected to one of't e tongues 15. This s ring 16 normally operates to turn the reel 4 and wind the cord 1 thereon, the said cord being thereby taken up and the effective length thereof reduced. By pulling upon the cord 1 however the same can be unwound from the reel 4 and the spring 16 placed under tension, the pawl 12 en aging the ratchet wheel 11 and enabling t e required adjustment to be made. Upon releasing the pawl 12 through the me ium of the end thereof projecting beyond the edge of the late the sprin 16 operates to wind the cor 1 upon the reel.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
The herein-described lamp cord adjuster comprising a' pair of spaced side pieces ower extensions which are deflected inwardl toward each other, a perforated guide bloc connecting each pair of corresponding extensions, a shaft journaled between the side ieces and having its extremities projecting eyond the same, a reel rigid with the shaft and located between the side pieces, a suspending cord passing loosel through the perorated guide blocks and avingan operative connection with the reel, a casing applied to the exterior of one of the side pieces and com rising a plate spaced from the side piece an formed with tongues which are extended inwardly and secured thereto, a coil spring housed within the casing, one end of t e coil spring being connected to the shaft while the opposite end is secured to one of the tongues, the said coil spring tending to normally wind the suspending cord upon the reel, a ratchet wheel r gid with the o posite extremity of the shaft and arranges upon the exterior of the opposite side piece and a pawl cooperating wit the ratchet wheel to ock the reel a amst the action of the spring, the said pawl eing pivotally mounted upon the side piece at an intermediate point and bein formed at one end with a finger-piece whic projects beyond the edge of the sideplece.
