Letters Patent No. 91,353, dated June 15, 1869.

IMPRO'VEMENT IN SAND-SCREEN.

The Schedule referred to :in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom tt may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES LocKwooD, of Haverstraw, in the county of Rockland, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Masons Sand-Screen; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of 'this specification, inWhch- Figure l is a frontview'of my improved screen.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line :o-x, g. v1.

Figure ,3 is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line y-y, tig. 1.

Figure 4 is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line z-z, iig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

It consists in the screen, constructed in the manner hereinafter 1more fully described.

A A are the side bars of the screen, which are light metal bars, connected to each other, and held in their properrelative positions by the cross-rods vor bars B, the ends of which pass through and are riveted to the said side bars A.

G G are the longitudinal wires of the screen, the size, number, and distance apart of which depend upon the particular use to which the screen is to be applied. y

'I he wires G are securely held in their proper relative positions by being passed through holes in the narrow plates D, near their upper edges, as shown in Iigs. 3 and 4.

The upper edges of the plates D may be cut off nearly upon a level with the outer surfaces of the wires C, as shown in iig. 4, or they may be scalloped, as shown in tig. 3, according to the use for which the screen is intended.

The lower edges of the plates D are bent downward, so as to clasp the rods B, as shown in fig. 2.

'lhe lower ends of the wires C are bent around the lower cross-rod B, and their upper ends are bent so as to clasp the upper plate D, as shown in fig. 2.

The upper part ofthe side-bars A is bentor curved forward, as shown in fig. 2, so as to more squarely receive the material to be screened, as it is thrown from the shovel.

The screen A B C D is surrounded with a Wooden frame, E, made somewhat similar to the frame of an ordinary screen, and detachably secured in place by pins passing through the said wooden frame, and through eyes or loops formed upon or attached to the side bars A ofthe screen, and entering recesses iu the side bars ofthe said wooden frame E.

The space between the upper end of the screen A B G D, and the top-end board of the frame E, may be covered with a narrow plate, I", to prevent the material being screened from getting into said space.

G is the supporting-stake, the lower end of which is pointed, to take a firmer hold. upon the ground, and the upperend of which is rigidly attached to a crossbar, H, the ends of which are pivoted to the upper ends ofthe spring-bars I; the lower' ends of which are pivoted to the side bars A ofthe screen.

When the screen is in use, the springs I and stake G are extended, as shown in fig. 2, to support` the screen at any desired inclination, the springs I bearing against the cross-bars of the screen, or against a detachable rod, J, passed through holes in the wooden frame of the screen, according as it is desired that the screen should have less or more elasticity.

When the screen is not in use,the spring-bars I and stake G may be folded up along the under side of the screen, and secured in place by the detachable rod J, as shown in iig. 1.

Having thus described my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An improved screen, formed by the combination of the side bars A, cross-bars B, longitudinal Wires O, and plates D, with each other and with the detachable wooden frame E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the stake G, cross-bar H,

v'springs I, and detachable rod J, with each other and with the screen A B O D E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
