MASSAGE APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY ADELAIDE HAINEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Massage Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a massage apparatus.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby steam or vapor may be administered to a patient to open the pores of the skin, and whereby the skin is Washed and the impurities drawn from the pores of the skin and a dry massage administered to the skin for producing a circulation of the blood to the parts operated upon.

A further object of the invention is to provide a massage apparatus which is extremely simple in construction, which is easily operated, and which provides means for regulating the flow of the fluid from a suitable chamber, by the operator.

With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction of elements and their arrangement in operative combination hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved massage apparatus, showing the same in operative position. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate sectional views of the face cups or applicators used in connection with the invention.

Referring tothe drawing the numeral 1, designates a tank or reservoir, adapted for the reception of a quantity of water, and is provided at its upper face with a removable cover or closure 2. The lower portion of the tank is preferably of a frusto-conical formation, whereby the liquid within the tank is directed to the lower central portion thereof, and which is provided with the depending pipe 3 having a regulating cock 1 and is connected with a generating tank or chamber 5. The chamber 5 is provided with a centrally disposed pipe 6 depending from the tank and terminating in the cone-shaped portion 7, adapted for the reception of a flexible tube 9 having its free end secured to a cup or applicator 10. Directly below the generating chamber 5, the pipe 6 is provided with an oil or alcohol burner 11, of any desired or preferred construction, adapted to furnish heat Specification of Letters Patent.

to the chamber 5 and to generate the steam or vapor employed in first stages of the massage treatment.

The cup or applicator used in connection with the apparatus just described is of a hollow cup shaped formation as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, and has its ends upturned to form a bead 111, whereby a perforated cloth 14, constructed of rubber or other suitable material, may be readily attached or detached from the cup.

The operation of this portion of my massage apparatus is as follows: A sufficient quantity of water is let into the generating tank 5 through the tank 3 of the reservoir 1, and the cock 4 is turned to prevent more water entering the chamber from the reservoir, the water in the generating chamber being retained therein by a cook 12 upon the pipe 6 of the chamber. The burner 11 is ignited and the water within the chamber 5 generated to steam. The cap 12 is now opened to allow the steam to pass through the flexible tubing 9 into the cup and through the perforated rubber cloth 14, which is applied to the patient. The cloth 14 is now removed and heated water is allowed to pass from the generator into the cup of applicator 10, which has been positioned upon the patient and the surplus water is given outlet by a pipe 15 connected with the cup, through an offset pipe 16 connected with a vacuum pump 17 formed upon the pipe 15 of the cup. This pump 17 is operated so as to force portions of the skin of the patient within the cup 10 and to agitate the water Within the cup to effectively remove impurities from the skin of the patient, the impure steam and water being ejected through the outlet pipe 16 of the pump. After the skin of the patient has been thoroughly agitated and the impurities removed by the process just described, a pump is no longer worked, and the flow of water, either hot or cold, is allowed to the cup 10, and after acting upon the skin of the atient the water flows outwardly through t 1e pipe 15 of the cup.

The apparatus and operation above described provide for the wet or steaming application, which is the first part of the massage treatment. A dry massage treatment may be afterward given the patient to provide for the thorough drying of the skin as well as insuring a perfect circulation of the blood in the parts operated upon. An efiicient dry applicator of the vacuum type is preferably used for such drying treatment.

From the above description it will be noted that I have provided a massage apparatus which is extremely sim 1e in construction, which provides means wiiereby water is generated to vapors, which is easily applied to a patient through a suitable applicator, wherein water may be administered through the applicators, the flow of vapors or water easily and conveniently regulated and a vacuum cup whereby a dry massage may be given the patient after the wet massage and the circulation of blood in the parts acted upon increased.

Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:

1. In a massage apparatus, a reservoir, a valve tube connected with the reservoir and communicating with a chamber, an outlet for the chamber, a burner upon the outlet for heating the water within the chamber to gen- -erate steam within the chamber, a flexible tube connected with the outlet, and a massage cup upon the tube.

2. In a massage apparatus, a cold water reservoir having a removable top and a frusto-conical base, a valve tube connected with the base and communicating with a chamber, an outlet pipe having a valve for the chamber, a burner upon said outlet pipe for top, an outlet pipe provided with a valve for the chamber, a burner for the chamber, a flexible tube connected with the outlet pipe, and a massage cup upon the tube.

4. The combination with a cold water reservoir, a chamber communicating with the same, means for generating steam within the chamber, of a flexible tube connected with the steam generating chamber and a massage cup connected with the tube, said massage cup being provided with a suction pipe having an out et whereby the vapor and moisture within the cup may be withdrawn while the cup is in applied position upon the face of a patient.
