Specification of Letters Patent.
States, residing at'New Britain, Connecticut,
5 have invented certain new and useful l1nprovements in following is :1 full, clear. nnd exuet tion.
()ur invention relates to improvements in locks, and pnrticulnrly hotelrooms.
The object of the invention is to provide :1 simple mechanism by which :1 person on the outside may readily determine whet room is occupied or not.
descriplndientord.loeks, of which the locks lor the doors oi I nseerlnined without the necessity of attempting to open [tis customary when a person enters n hotel room to lock the door iron] the inside or at least insert the key in the lock :11 once. 'la kurg mlvantnge oi for instance, at maid, uury ascertain it the room 18 occupied, and, consequent ly, whet her to attempt to open the door or not.
7 this practice we huve I 20 provided nsimple device by wluch 11 person.
' and 17.
The accompanying two sheets ot' dv-nwiugs illustrate the preferred form of our iui'eutiou. Figure l is on elevation 11in fragment of :1 door having n lock with escutelieou :1ud indicntor embodying the improvements of our invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the some part being broken key inserted in the inner keyhole. mid the indicator co-ncting therewith. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing 11 fragment of a key and the indicator in section. Fig. -t is sectionnl view of the indicator in the position it would occupy when pressed in when the key is absent. Fig. 5 is n detail sectional .viow of the iudicntor housing or beuriug. Fig. 6 shows side elevations of the movable members 01'' the indicator. Fig. 7 shows the spriug for the indicator.
1 is a. fragment of at door.
2 indicates the face plate of the lock whieh is of the mortise type.
3 and 4 are the escuteheou plnles ol suitable design secured to the opposit the door.
5 is it looking and retracted by an bolt adopted to be extended suitable menus, for e.\'-- ample a key insertec in the key-hole 6 at the outer side of the door. 7 is a second locking; bolt adapted to be ext ended and retracted by Ti'lfi y'such S 3 inserted through a key-hole It 'lhis screw prefernblv has n concave whi 'h serves to center the tip of it key when away to show the 11 detail I from the exterior will know instantly upon Patented Feb. 23, mos. i

at the inner side oi the door. it is intended that both locking bolts shall be operated by 5b the same guest key.
it) is nu ordiunry spriugnessed hitch bolt ndnpted to be retrneted by either of the knobs H or if us is customary.
(ousidernhle nnnoynnce is often occnsioned the ot'ellpnnta wi' 11 room by servants trying the door from the exterior. ()ur invention provides n simple menus by which it can be whether the room is occupied the door.
13 is n button or plunger supported in the housing or plunger guide 14 and normally pressed Ul,lt\\'ttl'(l by n spring 15 which is loented between the :tbutments orshouldors it) '1' The housing is held in the outer any suitable manner.
angular end the escutcheon plnte l in 1% is t wnsher cniiled by the l.) of the plunger or button for limiting outwzu'd movement thereof.
it) is it screw inking into n tnpped hole in the inner end oi the plunger or button 13. hend us 3 and e iudicnted in dotted lines in Figs.
it is inserted in the. lock from the inner side of the door.
Norunilly, the indicator ports are in the position shown in Figs. 2. and 3. The presence of the key in the position shown in these ligures prevents the rlunger or button 13 from being operated. person trying the button a iplymg n slight pressure to the button w tether the key is in the lock or not in other words whether the room is occupied. When the key is not in the lock the button may be pushed in as shown in Fig. 4; in other words it i.. tree. to move. The screw 20 serves as on ndjustnble extension to the button so that the same indientor may be adopted to doors i of dillerent thicknesses and to escutcheon or e sides of side plates of diil'erent thicknesses nud still co-nct properly with n key when inserted in the inner key-hole, 9.
From the foregoing it 'will be seen thut the indicator device is one that is rnnnunlly set by that not which causes the locking of the door. it is likewise nuinutill rend; thut is, it is read by the sense of feeling. This is of partieubn' ndvantnge because such doors as it is may be presse along desirable to have indicators upon are usually oorly lightedv corridors. when t e plun or or indicator is movable or 51 in it would indicate that the room is unoccupied; whereas, when it is locked against movement it would indicate it is 00011 )ied.
What claim is:
1. A construction of the character described com rising the combination of a lock having two ocking bolts and separate keys holes on opposite sides out of line with one another for the insertion of keys for the operation of said bolts and a manually operable indicating device located opposite one key-hole for determining the presence or absence of a key in said ke -hole.
2. In a 100 provided with a key-hole, a locking bolt and a manually operable indicating device having a projecting exposed portion and located opposlte the key-hole for determining the presence orabsenceof a key therein.
3. In a lock mechanism, the combination of a lock casing and a locking olt adapted to be operated by a key inserted in the key-hole and a movable indicating device having a 1projecting exposed portion and in line wit the key-hole adapted to be engaged by the key inserted therein.
4. In a lock mechanism, the combination dicating device adapted to protrude from'the opposite side for manual engagement.
6. In a construction of the character de- As shown,
Having a key-hole on one side v aware scribed, the combination of a lock having two bolts, two sideplates each having a keyadapted to co-act with a key inserted in one of said key-holes.
7. In a look, a bolt adapted to be operated by a key, an indicating device adapted for manualengagement and an adjustable extension carried by said indicating device for the purpose specified.
, 8. As an article of manufacture, an indi cating device for a key-operable-lo'ck com prising a housing, a' spring-pressed plunger carried thereb and an ad'ustable extension member mova le with said plunger and having a key-seat. j,
9. In an indicator for looks, the combination with a lock and an escutcheon plate, of a spring pressed plunger carried by the escutcheon plate inthe plane of the key hole in the lock, and ada ted to coact with a key inserted in said key ole.
10. In an indicator for looks, the combination with a lock' and. an" escutcheon plate, of a housingsecured to the escutcheon plate in the plane of the key hole in the lock, and a plunger mounted in said housing and adapted to coact with a key by the insertionof said key in said key hole.
1]. in a lock mechanism, the combination of a bolt, meansfor o erating the bolt from the inner side of the ock, and a movable indicating device separate from said bolt-operating means, adapted to protrude from the opposite side for manual engage- .ment.
