Patented-Feb, e, 11909.v
Application filed. December 21, 1907', Serial No. 407,453. Renewed November 18,1908. Serial No.,463,3 17.
Improvements in lVrecking-Frogs, of which v the following is a specification.
My invention Arelates to wrecking frogs.,I A.that is to devices used for replacing railroad rolling stockupon the track after having beenv derailed. I am aware that frogs of this character have been devised and are usedy for this purpose. These frogs as heretofore devised have been of sufficient length torest upon the two adjacent ties, and when in use are spiked thereto. Frequently the frogs are dis-` placed bythe wheels and must be readj usted and respiked to the ties, consuming much -time. Also, the jfrogslfrequently permit the wheels to pass completelyi over them with'outl replacing thederailed ca r on the track. Y The object of my invention is to provide a wrecking frog which.will insure placing i' the wheels on the track and equip the same with means for positively locking the vfrogs tothe rails thereby absolutely preventing displacementof the frogs.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
' v My invention 'will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication and in which, l
-Figure l is a side elevation of a frog einbodyingmy invention in its preferred form, Fig..2 is an end elevation ofthe inside frog, Fig. 3 is a cross section of the outside frog taken on the linear-fx of Fig. Land, Fig.
4 is a plan view of a section of track with the frogs inposition. 4.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the high or outside frog and 2 the low or inside frog. Each frog comprises a single member preferably of suiicientflengthto rest upon three adjacent ties and gradually sloping upwardly from each end tothe center which isof the proper height for the rail with which it is to be used. Theupper faces'of the frogs are inclined toward the rail Ito prevent the wheels' from slippingaway from the rails, and the apexis transversely grooved as at 3 to throw the wheels inwardly upon thc rails.
Each frog is provided with a Ilug or rib, 4, which rests' against the web of the rail and holds the frog iny proper position in relation to the rail, 'that is, the lugy on'the outer frog.'
permitsy the frog to rest against the head` of the railwhereas the lug on the inner frogv .holds the same at a suiiicient distance from the rail to permit theiiange of the-wheel to rest between the, apex lor crown' ofy the frogv and the head of the rail.
Intermediate ofthe center and ends ofthe frogs are depending portions 5 5 which extend downwardly between the ties. These.
strengthen the frogs at the comparatively thin parts and are provided with` transverseslots to receive the members .by which the frogs. are lockedto the rails. The locking members comprise the preferably Hat bars, 6 which extend through the transverse slots, 7,- and under the flange o'f the rail, terminating in the hook portion, 8 whichlengages'thev flange as shown in the drawings. llfhebars, 6 are provided with the'slots, 9 to receive the wedges, 10. It is obvious that whenjthe wedges, l0 are driven in place, the frogs will be lsecurely locked to the rails. The slots, 7 are arranged at each end of the lug or rib, 4f, thereby preventing-twisting of t-he frogs lwithrelation to the rails; and: temores securely bind the frog tol the. rail the slots are inclined upwardly and outwardly as shown bringing the wedge, l()v higher upon the outer face of the frog.
I preferfto form the frogs ofrol'led steel and 1n such case'makethem hollow as illustrated. Then made in this manner they are comparatively light ingweight butv of great strength.
Having described my.v invention whatv I' claim asnew and desireto secure by Letters Patent isz' l. A-wreckingfrog comprising a double wedge shaped member'having depending.
portions adapted to rest betweenthe ties and having upwardly 'inclined slots extendingl from the inner face of said, depending portions andhooked barsv extending through said slots and adapted tolock-said frog toy the rail, substantially as described;
2. A wrecking frog comprising a doublel wedge-shapedl member havingl a smoothl upper face inclined toward the rail.. and being transversely grooved attheapex, ,a depend- Aing, portion' on said frog: adaptedftoextendk between the tiesa'nd` having a; transverse slot therein and' a hookedl bar extending, through said slot and adapted tolockI the frogto the rai] substantially as described.
3. A wrecking frog comprisingl a, double wedge-shaped memberhavingits upper face inclined toward the .raill and provided with;
a depending portion near each end adapted In testimony whereof I have signed .my to extend downwardly between the ties, said name to this specication in the presence of depending portions each being provided two subscribing; witnesses.
with a transverse slot, a, hooked bar extend- GUSTAVE E. NYQUIST. ing through each of said slots and adapted Witnesses:
to lock the frog to the rail, substantially as FRANCES E. Sin-22H1',
described. LYDIA RINKENBERGER.
