- FIXTURE-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent;
PatentedFeb. 2,. 1909.
Application filed May 29, 19072 Serial No. 376,314;
To allrwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION W. Prrivnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi nois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fixture supports', of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to im rovements in fixture supports, and particu arly to wall or ceiling, plates or brackets for lighting fixtures, such as for the lamps and controlling connections of v gasolene. lighting systems, the main object of the invention being to provide a supportingplate or bracket.
which may be employed either for the purpose of supporting a lamp and connecting the hydrocarbon feedpipe therewith or supporting and connecting a controlling; valve with the hydrocarbon feed of supplypipe, whereby the supply'of the? hydrocarbon to all the lamps on a flour may be controlled from a given point. I p i The invention consists of a device of the character described embodying certain improved features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part ,of this specification, in which:- 1 j; I
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, the canopy appearing in section, of a wall plate or bracket constructed in accordance with my invention shown in use as a lamp support and hydrocarbon feed pipe connection. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bracket employed as a support for a cut-off valve controlling the feed of hydrocarbon from the supply pipe to a lamp or a series of lamps. Fig. 3 is a section through the controlling valve shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section through the wall plate or bracket. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the improved wall or ceiling plate or bracket, which comprises a body or attachingplate 2, of any preferred form, and which is provided with a desired arrangement of openings 3 for the passage of screws or other fastening devices to secure the same to a wall, ceiling or other suitable support. Integral with the body or attachingplate and projecting forwardly therefrom is a "socket member 4 internally screw-threaded at its outer or forward end,,as at 5, and having the rear portion of its bore or passage smoothsurfaced to form. a combined hydrocarbon feed channel and: catch basinor chamber 6. A nipple '7" is'integral with the upper rear portion of thesock'et 4 and extends vertically therefrom andis provided with external s'crew-threads'8 and abore or passage 9 communicating at its lower end with the said channel anol chamber 6.
In Fig. 1 I have shown the wall or bracket plate employed as a supportfor a lamp fixture 10 and connection for the hydrocarbon supply or feed tube orpipe 11 leading from the hydrocarbon.- reservoir. As illustrated, the lamp fixture 10 is provided with a feed ipi e i2 located abeve its generatorpipe 13 aficl threade'djat its" rear; endas at 1a, for ins errron intq thesurewtnreaded end 5 of the 6 7 from the bracket.
' connecting joint.
t 4 b3 hich the lamp is supported The hydrocarbon feed pipe 11 is connected with the nipple 7 in any suitable manner, as by providmg it at its connecting end with a tapered jam or metallic packing plug 15 engaging the upper end of the nipple and partially projecting into the passage 9 and retained in position by an internally threaded packing cap or nut 16 engaging the screw threads 8, whereby the supply pipe is attached to the bracket plate in such a manner as to prevent any possibility of leakage of the hydrocarbon at the A canopy 17, of the form and construction ordinarily employed, in connection with electric and gas lamp fixtures, may be secured upon the rear end of the pipe 12 to shield and inclose the bracket and impart an ornamental finish at the supporting point. This canopy is provided as usual with an opening for the passage of the pipe 12 by which it is slidably fitted thereon so as to permit ready access to the bracket when occasion requires, and may be secured in position by set screw or other desired fastening 18.
In Fig. 2 wherein the bracket is illustrated as a feed pipe connection and support for a cut-off valve controlling the supply of hydrocarbon to a lamp or series of lamps, the hydrecarbon supply pipe is connected with the nipple 7 in the manner previously described. The controlling valve here shown consists of a casing 19 externally threaded at its inlet 1 end for insertion into the socket 5 and provided with a feed passage 20 and a suitable I With a cut-off valve 22 controlling the passage 20, which latter is in con'miunication With an externally threaded discharge nipple 23 to which a feed pipe leading to an elevated burner or all of a series of burners on a noor is coupled similar to the manner in p which the supply pipe 11 is coupled to the bracket nipple 7. 'l he bracket accordingly may be employed as a support for a valve, such as described, located at any convenient point so as to be readily accessible for the purpose of controlling the feed of the hydrocarbon fro n the supply pipe to a lamp located at any desired elevation or to a series of lamps or to all the lamps on the iioor of a building. lhe valve as thus arranged Will serve as a main valve of the type required by various fire insurance companies to enable the hydrocarbon to be completely cut oil from the source of supply to the burners in a room or all the burners 011 a floor, as will be readily understood.
'ihe bracket may also be used as a connecting medium or combined support and pipe connection in various relations and for central portion of said plate and formed irith a bore of uniform diameter internally screwthreaded at its outer end and smooth-surfaced at its inner end, and a nipple extending upwardly at right angles from the boss in advance of the plate, said nipple being e?;- an) ternally screw-threaded and provided with a bore of less diameter than the bore of the boss and intersecting the said smooth-surfaced inner end thereof.
In testimony whereof, I aliix my signature as in presence of two witnesses.
