Description

P. G. WIEGERT. BASH WEIGHT.
APPLICATION run-n FEB. 12, 1003.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
WITNESSES INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL G. WIEGERT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE STANDARD COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
EASE-WEIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL G. WIEGERT, a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Weights; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to sash-weights and has special reference to such weights that are formed from cast metal, such as iron.
The object of m invention is to provide a chea simple an e'liicient form of a sashweig t which can be easily and quickly formed for use with a guidin rod in a W111- dow frame, as Well as one whic can be easily, properly and always guided true within a narrow and hollow frame.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved sash weight, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a window frame jamb showing in improved sashweight applied thereto. Tig. 2 is a side elevation of the sash-Weight with the ends of the same shown in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top view of the weight. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-section of the same on the line 4-4 Fig. 2.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
As illustrated in the drawing, 1 represents my improved sash-weight, which is of the usual shape and size, and is formed of cast metal, such as iron. Before the casting of the weight 1 a short section of a metal tube or ipe 2 formed of steel or brass is placed wit in the mold cavity for forming said weight and during the casting of the same the bod ipe. he pipe 2 will thus act as a cover ur' such molding or casting of the weight 1 and it preferably extends slightly beyond the upper end 1 of the said weight, as at 2, so that such pipe when formed within said weight will act as a lining for the same and form a bearing by its interior surface 3 for of the weight is cast around said the guiding rod 4 to be employed therewith, as hereinafter described.
When my improved sash-weight 1 is so formed and it is desired to use the same within a window jamb 5, the following construction is preferably employed therewith. The guiding rod 4 is generall located centrally of the hollow portion 6 of t e j amb 5 and is suported at its lower end in a bracket 7 extendmg into said hollow ortion from the inner face of said jamb. T e lower end of the rod 4 is threaded and extends through the bracket 7, so that a nut 8 can engage with said end and hold the same in place at this point. The upper end of the rod 4 is extended or bent inwardly toward the inner face of the jamb 5, as at 9, and is secured thereto by the screws 9'.
The weight 1 is placed around the rod 4 and is adapted to travel vertically along the same by being guided on said rod through the bearing surface 3 in the pipe 2 within the same fitting around the rod. Between the lower end of the weight 1 and the bracket 7 and fitting around the rod 4 by an opening through the same is a bum er 10, which is formed of any suitable fiexib e material, pref erably rubber, and such bumper is supported by said bracket so that it can engage with the lower end of the said weight when it is lowered or dropped upon the same.
The guiding and bearing lining or pipe 2 in the weight 1 is shown as applied centrally of said weight and at one side of the weight and adjacent to said pipe is an eye 11, which is secured in the upper end 1 of said weight in any suitable manner, so that one end of the chain 12 can be connected to the same and be passed over the pulley 13 mounted in the racket 14 on the inner face of the jamb 5, for being connected at its opposite end in any suitable manner to the sash (not shown). It will thus be seen that my improved sashweight can be operated with ve little friction on the parts and will enab e a permanently fixed guiding rod to be em loyed with the same, while the weight can e operated easily and noiselessly and will not be liable to st out of alinement or come in contact wit the frame or other parts.
It will be obvious that the lining or bearing for the weight may be located at other positions in the same and the parts composing the said weight may be formed of any suitable materials, While various other changes l Weight provided with a tube or pipe within 10 and modifications in the design, shape and l the same for forming a bearing therein and construction of the Weight. may be resorted l having the weight cast around the same.
to Without departing from the spirit of the In testimony whereof, I the said PAUL G.
(5 invention, or sacrificing any of its advan- \VIEGERT, have hereunto set my hand.
ta es. E PAUL G. WIEGERT.
"hat I claim as my invention, and desire i Witnesses:
to secure by Letters Patent, is: J. W. TRAVELL,
As a new article of manufacture, a sash 5 R. A. KNOWLES.
