Description

E. W. SMITH. STORAGE BATTBRYPLATE. APPLICATION PILEDAPB. 13, 1,908.

Specification of Lettera Patent.
Patented. Feb. 1902i.
' Application led April 13, 1908. Serial No.
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. SMITH, o citizen of the' United States, and niresident of Phledel his, in the countyof Philadel phio. and state of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storage-Battery Plates, of whichy the 'ollowin1 is n specification,
The principal ob ect of the present invention is to improe-:e t o connection of the body of the plate with the sides onrVbottom oi the rim thereof, to the end th'ut the tendency v to fracture and disintegratiort'st these arts may be successfully opposed, and the'e 'ective life of theplote increased.
The invention will be claimed at the end hereof und en' embodiment of it is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in whichf Figures l and 2, are respectively on edge and :i face View of the plate, o portion of the hitter only being shown and the rest being;A
indicated in broken lines, and Fig'.y 3, is e transverse sectional View drown to en en- 4`lorged scale, illustrating features of the in? Ventron.
' Referring to the drawings thebody 1, of the platecomprises n. great number of eje having spaces 3, be tlweenthem, which extend clemthrough the The body also comprises cross-wise l ronomingreinforcing ribs 4, which nrc spaced some little distance sport.
5, are the sides, 6, is the bottom and 7, is the top of the rim of the plate, which is provided with s. lug 8. ln e plate of the character described, when in use, there is o tendency on the port of the sides 5, of the rim or frame, to crock, brezil; end subsequently give rise to o rupture, that in time ext-ends clear across the plate, thus dividing it in two. This defect ,is present even though the thickness ol these parte be increased, but this defect is avoided in the l manner to be described.
the body end :i out midway of the plate, e
Fig. 3, and indicated upon Fig. 2hy dotted lines inside of' thepletes. This beveled or pointed web really causes the body of the lote to merge gradually into the sides of the lramle so that there is no shor line of demarcation between the two, an the effect of it oit-he plate.
Whot I Gleim is: Y
L. A storage battery plete consisting of nv body port of iine ribs having between them `spaces which extend clear Athrough. the plate and 'havingr cross-wise ranging: reinforcin ribs,a'nd ol' n. rim or frame the bottom an sides of which are providedwith e, te ering web that-extends inward, substantie ly es described.-
2. A storage botteryfplete, consisting of a. body part of fine ribs havingbetween theml spaces which extend clear through the plate und having erossJevise4 ranghi reinforcing ribs, and of :trim or frame the sides of which are provided with u'tapering web that extends inward, substantially as described.
, In testimony whereof I A have hereunto signed my nome.
EDWARD W. SMITH,
Witnesses:
BRUCE Fono, Geo. M. HOWARD.
From' the ed e there extends in toward beveled or nointed web 10, shown clearly in is to successfully oppose or restrain or pree vent breakage such es has been referred to st the sides of theplete, so that the tapered web materially adds to the life and cllielency
