In the drawing represents an ordinary double acting steam cylinder shown 'connected in the usual way to the shaft B. The

The rotary valve K has a steam chamber L and is provided with an opening M through its face which rrla gisters with the opening H of the port plate and when the engine 18 111 operation said chamber is always full of live steam which is supplied through the channels G.

Centra ly located within the outer side of the rotary valve is a square socket P, somewhat less in depth than the wall of the valve. In this socket the square end of a stem n enters and is loosely fitted, the stem from the socket outward is round, and extends through the side of steam chest which is provided with a suitable stuffing box, and thence through a bearing 0 that may be supported by a bracket attached to the steam chest. To the outer end of the stem is secured a bevel gear 19, engaging with a pinion 73 secured to a shaft Q, that is su ported by a bearing and bracket It also attac ed to the steam chest; and thence, in line with the engine, the shaft extends throrgh bearing S where it is provided with a pinion p that engages a bevel gear p attached to the engine shaft B. Ihe bevel pinions on the shaft Q being one half the diameter of the bevel gears on the engine shaft and valve stems will obviousl revolve the rotary valves synchronously with the engine shaft B.
If found necessary, spring adjustment, regulated by screws q may be utilized to insure the seatin of the rotary valves against the ort plate h or any well known steam met od ma be employed for the purpose. At both en 5 of the port plate E, on the side that rests against the face of the steam chest, a recess T is provided in which valves U are fitted; these valves have two ports 1" r corresponding in width and length to the ports a a. and c in the port plate, but spaced a greater distance apart, when they are drawn outward, so the opening r registers with the plate ort a, and r with ort b, the rotary valve 111 its passage will at mit steam to the cylinder throrgh its port in into port I) until he port m in its revolution is covered by passing over the segments 9 g which closes the port until the next forward stroke'of the piston.
'I he exhaust steam during this as'sage has been escaping at the opposite encl 'of the cylinder, thIOt gh valve port 1" and plate ort a, thence throi gh the radial valve port into the steam chest and out throrgh the exit 0. When desired to reverse the motion of the engine, the valves U are forced inward until the port 1; rests over plate port a when valve port 1" will rest over plate port 0, steam then passes to the cylinder through the ports 0 and 1" with port I), the rotary valve in its passage will admit steam to the cylinder throu h its port m into port I) until the port m, in its revolution is covered by passing over the segments 9 g which closes the port until the next forward stroke of the piston. The exhaust steam during this passage has been escaping at the opposite end of the cylinder through valve port 1*, and plate port a, thence through the radial valve port N into the steam chest, and out through the exit 0. When desired to reverse the motion of the en e, the valves U are forced inward until t re port r rests over plate port a when valve port r will rest over plate port 0, steam then passes to the cylinder through the orts c andr, from slot f and exhausts at t e opposite end of the cylinder through valve ort 7', plate port a and through rotary va ve port N, into the steam chest.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. Ina valve mechanism for engines impelled by steam under pressure, the combi nation, with a cylinder and piston reciprocating therein, of a steam-chest, rotary valves rotating in said steam-chest and havi'n annular exhaust ports near the periphery t ereof, and a port plate connected to said cylinder covering cylinder port's, the said port plate being provided at each end with two steam ports, and two exhaust ports whereby the steam is admitted to and from the cylinder ports, all beneath the said rotating valve, substantially as described.
2. In a valve mechanism for engines impolled by steam, the combination, with a. cylinder and piston reciprocating therein of a steam-chest, rotary valves rotating in said steam-chest and having annular exhaust ports near the periphery thereof, a steam chamber within the valves opening centrally throu h the face thereof into a port plate and provi ed with a steam port opening into annular grooves in a port plate, together with means for rotating the valves, substantially as described.
3. In a reciprocating steam-engine, the combination, with a; steam-chest, a cylinder rovided at each end with ports entering into the same, of a port plate secured to the port face of the cylinder, said port plate provided with qprts opening into the cylinder ports throng a suitable valve portion; and rotary valves rotating against the face of the port plate having annular exhaust ports therein, and provided witha steam chamber and a steam port for admitting steam to the ports in the port plate, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4.
