AUGUST W. MADER, OF SEGUIN, TEXAS.
SKIRT-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
Application filed April 4, 1908. Serial No. 425,224.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST l/V. MADER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Seguin, in the county of Guadalupe and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to skirt supporters, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple and efficient means for supporting the outer skirt of a ladys dress and at the same time to hold down the waist belt of a shirtwaist.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device comprising a waist belt having attached thereto a combined skirt supporter and shirtwaist holder, said belt adapted to be applied underneath the outer skirt to support it in wet weather.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a skirt supporter made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the clasp showing in dotted lines the movable member pulled outwardly. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the movable member of the clasp.
Referring to the drawing for a more specific description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a waist belt, and secured at proper positions on said belt are the skirt supporter clasps. These clasps each consist of a strip of resilient metal 2 having its upper end secured to the belt 1, as by stitches 3 passing through stitch holes in the strip 2. Riveted to the strip 2 is a strip of resilient metal 4 connected by rivets 5 to the strip 2 and provided at its lower end with an inwardly bent portion 6 having teeth formed on the end thereof, while the upper end is provided with an inwardly extending lug 7, and the upper end of the strip is serrated. as at 8. The movable member of the clasp comprises a strand of wire bent upon itself to form the finger loop 9, and the two parallel arms 10 connected together at their free ends by means of a cross bar 11 and having mounted thereon a sliding jaw consisting of a cross bar 12, the ends of which are bent around the parallel arms 10 and a right angularly bent toothed member 13. The
cross bar 11 is placed between the two members 2 and 4t and between the rivets 5 so that the movable member is held down by the spring action to engage the toothed member 13 above the bent portion 6 to engage the material of the skirt between them. hen the movable member is thrown into the dotted line position in Fig. 2, the material of the skirt is placed over the bent portion 6, and when said movable member is thrown down to the full-line position the skirt is engaged by the toothed members.
The shirtwaist is engaged by the inwardly extending lugs 7, while the serrated end 8 engages the waist band of the outer skirt to hold it in position relatively to the waistband of the shirt-waist. In the center of the back of the belt 1 I have provided a shirtwaist clasp which consists of a single strip of resilient metal bent upon itself and secured to the belt by stitches passing through one of the members, while the other member is provided with a lug 7 to engage the shirtwaist and a serrated end 8 to engage the waist band of a skirt.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a belt made in accordance with my inven tion may be applied underneath the outer skirt and be entirely invisible and will hold the outer skirt elevated, as required in stormy weather, and will at the same time hold the waist band of a shirtwaist down to a proper relation with the waist band of the skirt.
The device may be manufactured at slight cost and is convenient and easy to operate.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A skirt supporter comprising two strips of resilient metal connected together by rivets, one of said strips being provided with engaging teeth at its opposite ends, a movable membcr provided with a cross bar disaosed between the two resilient strips intermediate the rivets, and a sliding jaw carried by said movable member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST W. MADER.
