Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
THOMAS J. OHUBB, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED PROCESS OF MELTING AND REFINING IRON FOR MALLEABLE-IRON CASTINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 90,927, dated June 8, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. GHUBB, of Williamsburg, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new Improvements in Process of Melting and Refining Iron to be Cast into Fine Iron Castings.
The nature of my invention consists in the application of highly-heated or superheated gas and heated air to the melting, reducing, and refining of crude pig or cast iron into refined iron for fine iron castings, and also in the application or combination of a gas-generator, a gas and air heating furnace or apparatus, and a combustion and a melting and refining chamber, for melting, reducing, and refining common crude pig or cast iron into refined iron for fine-quality iron castings, and in the application of the described )rocess of refining iron with the process of ma ring iron castings for malleable iron and other purposes.
Blade of Operation.
common crude pig or cast iron, and apply heated or superheated gas and highly-heated air into the melting or combustion chamber, directly over, around, and through the openlypiled pigs of iron, until the m--tal is melted, and then I regulate the quantity of heated gas, or the quantity of heated air to act upon the surface of the molten metal, until it is refined. I then tap and cast into molds, in the usual way.
This improvement enables me to use common crude pig-iron in place of the best highpriced irons, and to refine the cheap iron equal to the best, and suitable for fine castings, for converting into what are known as malleableiron castings, thereby producing a great saving in the cost of the crude iron.
I claim- 1. The application of superheated gas and highly-heated air, for the purpose described.
2. The application and combination of a gas-generator, a gas and air heating furnace or apparatus, and a melting and refining chamber, for the purpose set forth.
3. The process described of refining crude iron with the process of making malleableiron castings.
THOS. .T. OHUBB.
