Specification of Letters Patent.
E'atented Jan. 5, 1909.
Application filed November 25, 1905. Serial No. 289,126.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, GUSTAV A. Nan STEAD and Sivnnr Mon, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in a Machine for Making Books; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thcreoi'i, Which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a machine for making books.
Heretofore in the construction of cheaper grades of books, such as sales memoranda and many other kinds, and particularly where it is necessary to afford a separable leaf comprising a body portion and a duplicate body portion for each leaf and a stub, it has been customary to print the leaf and cut the same While printing then fold manually or by mechanical means. The leaves are then sorted and arranged by hand and secured in books by stitching after which they trimmed. The books thus formed are rendered very expensive owing to the number of employees required to do the work and also owing to the relatively slow operation of sorting, binding and trimming by hand.
The object of our improved mechanism therefor is to construct books directly from rolls of paper, each having printing transversely thereon for the entire length of the sheets of which the book is to be formed and each sheet in a roll bearing the same page number or designating character. The number of rolls employed equals the number of leaves required for the book.
The invention embraces, also, the mechanism whereby the sheets are mechanically assembled, fixed and severed from the roll in one continuous operation, dispensing entirely with hand labor and affording a better and much cheaper book than has heretofore been possible.
The invention in the matters consists hereinafter described and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the i l l I i 1 a 1 i i i same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line 3-3 of 1. e is a side elevation of the feeding and cutting mechanism. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a section tken on line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Fig. '7 is a section t; on on line 7-7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail of part of the actuating mechanism. Fig. 9 is a top plan view of the stapling mechanism illustrating its relation to the support. As shown in said drawings: Said niechanism embraces a rack adapted to support any desired number of printed rolls of paper, es h of which is appropriated to a different leaf of the book to be constructed and one of which ail'ords the covers. In alinement with said rack and adapted to receive the ends of the printed slips from each roll is a stapling or stitching machine X of any desired kind whereby the strips from said indepemlent rolls are stapled or stitched along one margin of the same and from whence the paper is for through an automatic feed and cutting machine. 'lfhe sewed or stapled body composed of all the arranged individual strips is automatically moved forward by said feed mechanism. the Width of the printed leaf and a tran. verse strip cut th 21' "rein at each opera tion of the knife thus forming a book.
Referring first to the supporting rack a portion of Which only is shown, A indicates a standard or upright on which is provided a bracket (L which receives the ends of the shaft upon which. the roll of paper a adap ed to form the cover of the books is supported. Above said cover roll a bracket arms or sup-- ports ii are arranged at an angle on said uprights and journaled thereon are the mandrels a? for the various strips forming the rolls 2 from which the books are to constructed. Said rolls are journal-ed on said brackets in such manner as to allow the same to revolve freely as the ends of the strips are fed to the machine and are usually so arranged in the rack that when the ends of the strips forming the separate rolls are brou; together the leaves thereon are brought ii register. The cover forms the bottom strip and the strip having the highest consecutive page number lies thereon and ianner all the ends of all the various strips are arranged one above the other with the strip appropriated to page i. formin the top of the book strip or body. If preferred, one or more rolls of impression paper a may be in a similar likewise secured upon said frame and may be bound with the strips forming the books.
The feed and cutting mechanisms are positioned in advance of the rack and are adapted to receive the arranged sheets from said rolls which are supported upon an up right frame comprising the legs B, B, side frame members bb and end frame members b which may be constructed in any desired manner and of any suitable material. The top or bed of said frame comprises a plurality of relatively thin bars B which are pivotally engaged at their front ends on the front end member b as shown in Fig. 1 and extend rearwardly and are supported near their rear ends upon the end member b as shown in Fig. 1 and afford a support which offers but slight resistance to the forward movement of the body strip.
At the front or cutting end of the machine is provided a vertically reciprocating adj ustable knife 0 and a presser foot D adapted to hold the paper during the cutting operation. Said knife 0 is rigidly secured upon a knifecarrying frame C of suitable construction adapted to reciprocate-vertically and laterally in guides afforded at the front end of the machine comprising uprights B which extend above the front end frame member or table I) in alinement with the outer face of the legs B against which said knife and knife frame 0 slide. Said knife and frame are held in place by bars 0 which are bolted at their ends to the face of said upright 13 and said legs B as shown in Fig. 4 and are offset therefrom a suflicient distance to form a guideway for said frame. Said knife frame C as shown comprises a casting provided with a broad horizontal slot therein of greater length than the width of the frame and through which the table b projects. As shown a strip of wood 5 or other suitable material is set in said table to afford a base for the operation of said knife.
The knife frame C as shown more clearly in Fig. 2 is provided adjacent each lower corner with a downwardly and laterally inclined guide slot 0 which incline in the same direction and through each of which extends a guide bolt or pin 0 which is rigidly engaged in said legs B and bars 0 and provided with anti-friction rollers 0 shown in dotted lines.
The presser foot D is carried upon a vertically movable bar d having sliding engagement in suitable grooves in the inner faces of the uprights B whereby it may move upwardly and downwardly with the knife but is prevented from lateral movement. For this purpose as shown said bar is actuated from the knife frame C which is provided on its rear side with rearwardly directed ins d which project into slots d in said ar (Z. Said slots as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 extend horizontally and at the ends corresponding with the downwardly inclined portions of the slots 0 are slightly inclined downwardly. The pins d are provided with anti-friction rollers d which engage in said in the end frame members and is provided on its forward end with a crank arm 6 having on the end thereof a block 0 adapted to engage in a vertical guide slot 0 in said knife frame whereby, as said crank is rotated, the frame is caused to move laterally and vertically upon the pins 0 thereby raising and lowering the presser foot D. Rigidly engaged on the shaft E is a beveled gear e adapted to mesh with a beveled ear 6 car-.
ried on the inner end of the sha t E journaled in a bearing sleeve 1) which is carried on the side frame member I). On the outer end of said shaft E is rigidly engaged a gear 6 which intermeshes with a pinion e upon the drive shaft E journaled in suitable bearings in the side frame members and provided with a drive wheel e Means are provided for engaging the'book or body stri intermediate the stapler or stitcher and t e cutting mechanism and acting to intermittingly feed the same forwardly beneath the knife a distance equal to the width of the books and for this u ose said feed mechanism as shown is s lda le upon ways which consist of horizontal, parallel rods F of any suitable kind secured in lugs f upon the side frame members at a suitable height. As shown said feed mechanism com rises a carriage or table G having downwar ly directed apertured legs 9 thereon which slidably engage said ways and at its forward end is provided with upwardly directed standards or arms 9 which are situated on the outer sides of the bars B Said standards g are provided with forwardly directed a ertured ends in which and in lugs g on the ront end of said table are engaged the vertically disposed guide rods or ways g Slidably engaged on said guide rods by means of integral zgiertured lugs g is the upper gripping jaw comprising as shown a transverse head which is provided with downwardly and inwardly directed arms 91 having slots 9 in their inwardly directed ends which extend horizontally and downwardly in the same direction, as shown in Fig. 6. Slidably engaged in said slots 91 by meansof pins g carried thereon is the cam yoke H having a central aperture therein through which the shaft E extends. Said yoke H as shown is supported in position by means of levers J-J which are pivoted at their centers upon the forward end of the table and at their lower ends are pivoted on the pins 9 Extending inwardly from the lateral margins of said aperture are the cam tits is and h adapted to be engaged by the cam H which is rigidly engaged upon the shaft E and of a length approximately equal to the travel of the table G. Said cam as shown. is provided with a longitudinal rib 7L2 adapted to contact with said cam tits 7L and 7t and shift the yoke laterally and owing to the inclination of the slots g acts also to move the jaw G vertically on the guide rods 5 Ad justably engaged upon the head is the contact plate or bar G which as shown is slotted to permit its being adjusted as to height with respect to the bars B to admit varying thicknesses of book or body strips to pass below it.
The lower gripping jaw I com rises a transverse bar provided with broad faced lugs or teeth i which project upwardly between the bars B and are approximately flush with the tops thereof. As shown said jaw I is also slida bly engaged u on the guide rods 9 by means of apertured ugs and is provided with horizontal slots in the ends thereof in which are slidably engaged pins i carried in the u per ends of the levers J--J and by means 0 l which said jaw is raised and lowered when the yoke is operated. Coiled springs i are carried on the rods 9' and engage at one end on the lugs g and at the other ends on the lugs and act to normally hold the jaw I at the upper limit of its movement.
The feed table G is adapted to reciprocate longitudinally of the machine and to feed the book or body strip forwardly the width of the book at each forward movement. For this purpose a transverse shaft K is journaled in the side frame members and rigidly engaged thereon is a lever K, one arm of which extends upwardly between the ways F and a bar is is pivoted thereon and on the table Gr and acts when said lever is operated to move the table backwards and forwards. Connected in the lower end of said lever K is a rod which extends forwardly and as shown a coiled s )ring 7r is engaged i the end thereof and to t e front frame member of the machine and acts normally to hold the feed table at the rearward li1 iit of its movement. Said shaft K projects beyond the side of the frame member I) and has rigidly engaged on the end thereof an upwardly extending lever K, on the up er end of which is pivoted a bar I 3 providec with a slotted forward end I763 through which extends said shaft E. A cam K having a relatively broad end thereon is rigidly engaged on said shaft E adjacent the bar K and is adapted to engage an anti-friction roller is on the end it of said bar and move said bar forwardly thereby rotating the shaft K and moving the feed table G forwardly.
The stapler or stitcher A which may be of any usual or preferred construction adapted to secure the stub portions of the leaves together is situated at the rear of the machine in position to operate upon the book strip as it comes from the rolls. A roller 6 is ournaled upon the rear ends of the bars B which acts to hold the sheets from said rolls a and in close contact. Means are provided for operating said stapler or stitcher while the book strip is at rest or stationary comprising a shaft L journal-3d in suitable bearings Z, adjacent the base of the stitcher on which is a laterally directed arn'i Z which rests at its outer end on the pedal L of the stitcher. U11 the end said shaft at the rear of the machine is rigidly engaged an arm L the upper end of which normally lies close to the side of the shaft E which is provided with a cam Z adapted to throw said lever in a direction to depress the pedal L and operate the stitcher.
The operation of our device is as follows: The leaf rolls a and cover roll a are arranged upon the rack t the rear of the machine and l the strips therefrom forming the body strip for the book are brought forward in such order that t 1e identification characters or'page numbers will read consecutively in the books. Said body strip is passed beneath the roller 5 to the feed mechanism, and lies upon the bars and is so adjusted that as it is moved forwardly the knife C will cut the strip at the proper points to detach the completed books.
The mechanism is so timed that when the knife C is raised the feed carriage will move the strip forwardly the width of a book. As said feed carriage is about to begin its onward movement the cam follower H on the shaft E contacts with the cam tit h on the cam yoke H throwing said yoke laterally in the direction of the upward inclination of the slots 9' thereby drawing the jaw G downwardly into engagement with the strip. At the same time the movement of the yoke H throws the levers J into vertical position thereby bringing the jaw l into binding engagement with the under side of the strip and holding it firmly against the jaw G. The cam K on the shaft E now begins to operate the levers K and i 2 to move the carriage forwardly to the position shown in Figs. 1 and l and owing to the shape of said cam, and the fact that the shafts E and E are geared to rotate at the same speed, said carriage is moved forwardly during approximately one quarter of a revolution of the shaft E and reaches the forward limit of its movement just as the knife is about to descend. Owing to the relatively broad end on said earn the carriage is held stationary at L its forward limit long enough for the knife and presser foot 1) to engage the strip and for the cam follower H to engage the cam tit h and open the jaws preparatory to the return movement of said carriage.
The crank arm 6 on the shaft E operates the knife frame C raising and lowering it with each revolution of said shaft. (Ewing to the inclination of the slots 0 the knife (I is forced through the strip with a lateral and downward movement to its downward limit as shown more clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. While the knife moves laterally the presser foot, which is connected with the knife frame by means of the pins at extending into the horizontal slots in the bar d, is permitted only vertical movement in the ways B and is brought downward. by said frame into binding engagement with the strip. Inasmuch as the slots (1 are inclined at one end complemen tally with the slots 0, when the knife begins its upward movement said presser foot is retained in engagement with the strip and is not elevated until the knife is practically clear of said strip.
The cam Z is so positioned on the shaft that it operates the stitching machine while the body strip is at rest thereby securing the leaves together preparatory to the severance of the books.
Obviously many details of construction may be varied without departing from the principles of our invention.
