No. 9os,s15.
y invention may best be undeISOOd by having reference to the drawing which ac companies and forms a part of this specification and which illustrates certain ,apparatus and circuit arrangements embodyin my invention; but it will be understood that my invention is not limited to the particular embodiment thereof illustrated in said dr( wing, inasmuch as many modifications ml f be made therein without departing from the principle thereof.
ln the drawing, the figure diagrammatic'- ally represents a space telegraph transmitting system;
In the figure, vibratory current, such for example as an alternating current generator.
M M are transformers,
l, Il are transformer primaries.
l2 l2 are transformer primaries.
V is an elevated transmitting conductor.
E is an earth connection.
L L are ferrie inductances.
K is a key arranged to operate the seriescontact switch P Q to close or lreduce the length of the gaps 7c 7c. Normally the key K is held against' its front stop a by the spring c. The back stop b is so placed that when the key is depressed the `gaps 7c 7c between the members P and Q,"wl1ich are secured respectively to the insulating members e c are either closed or else sufliciently reduced to permit the power circuit, which includes the `generator A, to charge the condenser C. When the condenser C is charged to a potential suflicient to` break down the medium between the-'electrodes ofthe spark gap or discharger S, high-frequency electrical oscillations are developed Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 25, 1908. Serial No. 423,099.
A represents a source of? Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
in the sonorous circuit S C 1 and the energy of said oscillations is translated to the elevated conductor sytem V I, E, effecting the radiation of electromagnetic waves.
The system so far describedis substantially the same as that disclosed in the patent to Cabot, No. 884,070 dated April 7,
The particular improvement effected by me over the prior art as shown in said patent, and which, it will'be obvious, is not limited to the system of circuits disclosed thereinbut is capable of use Iin Various other systems of circuits, consists Vin connecting across the terminals,of the sonorous circuit an inductance, preferably the ferric inductance L, so proportioned 'that the parallel branch circuit L C I, having inductance in one of its branches and capacity in the other will have a capacity reactance for the frequency of the currents developed by the generator Agsaid capacity reactance preferably being equal to` or greater than the former M while the condenser C is being charged. Vhen the said parallel branch circuit 1s designed as above setforth, the powerl factor of the primary power circuit which includes the generator A@ and the primary Il is increased and may be raisedy to unity. The ferrie inductance L may be employed to compensate for the magnetic leakage 1n the transformer M.
I claim: l. A space telegraph transmitting system comprisingha transformer, a source of v ibratory current of definite frequency m series with the primary of'said transformer, a sonorous circuit, connections fr om the secondary of said transformer to said sonorous circuit and said sonorous circuit, said inductane being so proportioned that for currents of said cluding said primary 1s substantially unity.
2. A space telegraph vtransmitting system comprising a transformer, a source of v ibratory current of definite frequency 1n a sonorous circuit, connections from thesecondary of said transformer to said sonorous circuit, and inductance connected acrosssaid an inductance connected across series with lthe primary of said transformer,
inductance reactance offered VAby the transy frequency the pwer factor of the circuit in- 2 @ossia sonorous circuit,- said indnctance being soy In testimony whereof, ll have hereunto proportioned that for ycurrents of said fresubscribed my 'naine this 23rd day of March quency the power factor of the circuit n- 1908.Y
cluding said Vprimary is substantially unity, JUHN STONE STONE. 5 and an inductance in said connections sub- Witnesses:
stantially equal in value to the .magnetic )PATRICK J. CONROY,
