Georgia, have invented a new and useful Collapsible Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible brackets, and its object is to provide a new and improved form of such bracket.
A further object is to provide a collapsible bracket which may be readily attached to the Side of a counter or the like, and which will fold into a small space without any proj ecting arts.
A stil further object of the invention is to provide an article of the kind described, the greater part of which may be made from pressed sheet metal.
The invention consists .in certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts, and combination of details, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bracket arranged to be used in connection with a seat in the open position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a detail of the joint lever. Fig. 4 shows a guide therefor.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several iigures of the drawings.
The frame of my device is indicated by the numeral 10, and preferably consists of a trough sha ed central portion provided with ears 11 at t e upper end, extending laterally therefrom, and a downwardly bent ear 12 at the lower end extending longitudinally therefrom. These ears are arranged with openings 13 adapted to receive bolts or screws. Near the lower end of the frame are formed ears 14, and the central part of the trough is bent up at the upper end to form a lug 15. It will readily be seen that the entire frame may bestamped from a single piece of sheet metal as thus constructed.
In the ears 14 is carried a pin 16 upon which is mounted a su port 17 here shown as consisting of a pair of bars. A pin 18 is here shown as connecting these bars, and a spring 19 is arranged between the pin and the frame 10, passing through an opening 20 therein in such manner as to normally press the bars 17 toward the frame 10 and cause them to take the position shown in Fig. 2.
It is obvious that any other desired arrangement of the spring might be substituted for this particular form. At the upper end of the bars 17 is pivotally mounted a lever 21V having an outwardly curved portion at the point near the pivot, as indicated by the numeral 22, and an inwardly curved portion, as indicated by the numeral 23. The inwardly curved portion 23 of the lever is jointed as at 24 for the purpose of permitting the end of the portion 23 to assume the position clearly shown in Fig. 2. At the end of the jointed portion is formed a ball 25, as here shown, but it will be obvious that any other form of enlarged end will accomplish the result hereinafter to be described. The lug l5 is provided with an opening 26 therein having a recessed portion 27 formed at one side thereof. The obj ect of this recessed portion will be apparent upon an inspection of Fig. 3, where it will be seen that the joint of the lever 21 would project when in the position there indicated, and thus revent the lever being drawn up througph the opening 26. This opening 26 constitutes a guide for the lever 21, as well as a stop, the ball 25 being larger than the opening and thus preventing the lever being entirely drawn out thereof.
There is formed at the end of the lever 21 an expanded portion 28 arranged to be attached to a seat or the like. In the present construction I have shown a seat 29 attached thereto. It will be observed that in place of the seat here shown a shelf might be attached to the carrier 28, and, if desired, two or more of the brackets might be used to support this shelf. It will further be obvious that in place of the shelf or seat7 a table might be attached thereto. It is, therefore, immaterial as to what is attached to the bracket.
In the operation of the device, when it is desired to place the shelf, seat, or the like in operative osition, all that it is necessary to do is to raw the same outward from the frame 10. The peculiar shape of the lever and guide will cause the carrier to rotate from a position approximately vertical to one that is horizontal, being held in that p0- sition by whatever weight may be placed on the seat or the like. When it is desired to return the same to the inoperative or folded position, all that is necessary is to remove the weight and the action of the, spring 194 will cause the bracket to yassume the position- 1.
