To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MALIOHA P. MAHAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rouses Point, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to car door fasteners, one object being the provision of a strong and secure fastening or look which takes into the opposite sills of the door way and absolutely prevents the opening of the door when the fastening is in locked position.
Another object is the provision of a fastening means whiohcan be sealed in locked position.
To these and other ends my invention consists in certain novel features and combinations all of which will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a car door showing my invention applied thereto, in locked position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the inside face of a car door. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view through the door and its casing.
I have shown my. invention applied to a sliding car door, it being understood that it is equally adapted for use on swinging doors with which refrigerator and other cars are equipped. Nor is the invention restricted in its use to car doors, but may be applied with equal facility to closures of any description, because the ends of the locking bar need not project beyond the opposite edges of the door.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a car door of any suitable construction adapted to abut against the stop 1, located adjacent the door opening of a car.
The fastening comprises a bar 2 extending across the outer face of the door from side to side and pivotally secured thereto by the straps 3, 3. This locking bar also serves to brace and strengthen the door. The ends of the bar terminate in cranks 4, 4, which pass through oppositely facing inverted L- shaped apertures 5, 5, in the door and when the bar is in locked position, such cranks are extended beyond the inner face of the door.
When the bar is in unlocked position, the cranks are withdrawn or swung into the apertures 5 and lie flush with the inner face of the door.
Guard plates 6, 6, are secured to the outer face of the door over the apertures 5, to close the latter and conceal the locking ends 4, 4, of the bar, the ends of the bar passing through holes in such guard plates. The upper ends of the oppositely facing inverted L-shaped apertures in the doors lie opposite the open ends of recessed sockets 7. carried on the opposing faces of the door jambs, which sockets at their open ends are curved in the arc traversed by the outwardly bent locking ends 4, 4. The inner ends of the curved sockets terminate preferably at points op osite and in horizontal alinement with the bar 2. These sockets are set into the door jambs 8, and when the bar is moved to locked position, the ends 4, 4, travel in the arc-shaped sockets to the straight portions which extend tangentially to the arc of position to indicate whether the contents of the car have been tampered with en route. The U-shaped handle, when the bar is in locked position is received between perforated lips 10,10, projecting from the outer face of the car door. The usual wire of the car seal may be slipped through the perforations in the lips, and in front of the U- shaped handle, the Wire being sealed.
My invention is simple, consisting of but few parts, and economical in its application.
Furthermore, it imparts additional strength to the car door and is easily and quickly operated.
Changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several described parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus fully disclosed my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A fastening means for doors comprising an apertured door, a locking bar pivotally mounted on one face of the door, the ends of the bar extending through the apertures in the door and formed into cranks, door jainbs, sockets carried by the ainbs and adapted to receive the cranked ends of the bar, When in locked position, the cranked ends of the bar receivable in the apertures in the door when in unlocked position and guard plates covering the apertures, the ends of the bar passing through holes in the plates.
