LAVATORY PLUG OR STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1908.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. lVnAvnR, of Mansfield, in the county of Itichland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lavatory Plugs or Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in lavatories and more particularly to an improved plug for closing the outlet for the waste,the object of the invention being to so construct a plug made of porcelain or other vitreous material, that it can be ground into its seat in the bottom of a basin or tub and afford a tight closure for the waste opening, and avoid the necessity for the provision of a bushing to line said opening and provide a bearing for the plug.
A further object is to provide a closure for the outlet ot a lavatory which can be cheaply manufactured; which will be attractive in appearance, and by means of which said outlet can be tightly closed without danger of becoming stuck on account of corrosion, or without becoming defaced on the account of liability of corrosion incident to the use of metal plugs and bearings.
lVith these objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a View of my improved plug showing one manner in which it may be grasped by a tool while grinding it on its seat in the bottom of a basin or tub; Fig. 2 is a view showing the plug with an operating red attached thereto.
1 represents my improved plug, which is made of porcelain or other vitreous material, and 1s provlded with a shank 2 which depends from its lower face. This shank atfords means for the reception of a suitable tool which may be inserted upwardly through the vent opening of the basin and made to grasp the shank 2 of the plug. This tool may be provided with any suitable means for rotating it and will be operated to grind the plug into its seat,watcr and emery being fed against the plug and the tool pulled downwardly during the operation of grinding the plug into its seat.
In the drawing, I have shown a tool in the form of a clamp 3 having lugs at to enter notches 5 in the shank 2 of the plug 1. The respective members of the clamp may be made of spring metal and connected by means of a screw (3. This clamp constitutes no part of my present invention and instead of making the operating tool in this form, any other suitable tool which can be secured to the depending shank of the plug and grind the latter into its seat, might be em ployed.
By my invention, I am enabled to obviate the use of metal plugs and metal bushings in the waste outlets oi basins and tubs, and am enabled to ell'ect a perfectly tight closure for the waste outlet.
The shank 2 of the plug is provided with a socket 7 for the reception of the upper end of an operating rod or stem 9 which may be threaded and cemented into said socket or secured therein in any other desired manner.
Having fully described my invention what I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A porcelain plug adapted for closing the outlet of a lavatory and seat against the material of which the lavatory is made, said porcelain plug having an integral depending shank to pass through the outlet of the lavatory and receive a tool whereby the plug can be rotated and ground to its seat.
2. A porcelain lavatory plug having an integral depending shank, said shank having its vertical wall notched for the reception of a tool whereby the plug can be rotated and pulled downwardly to grind said plug on its seat in the bottom of the lavatory.
