ATTACHMENT FOR UMBRELLAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 17, 1907.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Serial No. 406,906.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BnRTr-IoLn M. NYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for umbrellas or parasols, and the object of the invention is to provide an elastic retainer for the ends of the umbrella ribs, whereby the ribs and covering may be securely held in closed position, said elastic retainer being provided with means for preventing undue stretching thereof and consequent injury thereto.
WVith these objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction of devices and their application to an umbrella or parasol handle as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of an umbrella provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal view of a portion of a handle, illustrating the application of my device thereon, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of my device taken upon the line 3-S of Fig. 1.
The device now commonly employed in securing the ribs of an umbrella in closed position comprises a metal collar slidably mounted upon the handle of an umbrella and adapted to overlie the ribs, thus holding them together. The sliding collar is of a size adapted to have its inner periphery closely engage the ribs of the umbrella, and in folding the ribs together around the staff of the umbrella one hand of the operator is required while the other hand of the operator is engaged in operating the sliding collar. The ribs must occupy their proper relative position around the staff of the umbrella for the collar to engage them, and should one of the ribs, as is frequently the occurrence, become displaced, the collar, being of such a size as to engage the ribs only when they are positioned around the staff, will not engage the ribs, and a separate operation of the position of the ribs and the collar must occur. WVith this construction it will be seen that quite an amount of patience is expended by the operator. The collar being loosely positioned upon the staff a very slight angular movement of the umbrella causes its displacement from engagement with the ribs of the umbrella, and as a consequence the umbrella ribs are displaced by a slight movement or jar of the umbrella.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an elastic holder for umbrellas whereby the ribs of the umbrella will be securely retained in closed position, and whereby a single rib may be inserted at a time if desired, thus overcoming the deficiencies of the apparatus above described.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an eflicient retaining device of the character described composed of an elastic cup having an outer facing or covering of flexible inelastic material, whereby undue stretching of the cup is prevented.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates a handle of an ordinary umbrella, 2 the covering thereof and 3 the ribs supporting the cover.
My improved holding device for retaining the ribs of the umbrella covering in closed position comprises a body portion l composed of a suitable elastic material having a reduced end 5 adapted to be fitted upon the lower portion of the handle 1 and to be secured thereon by a suitable ring or ferrule 6. The opposite end of the holding device 4: is provided with an enlarged opening 7 having a bead 8 so as to provide a resilient portion whereby the device may be turned upon itself or stretched for the reception of the ribs 3 of the umbrella without danger of tearing or mutilating. The holding device 4: flares rearwardly from the mouth 7 and provides a substantially eupshaped or bell-shaped structure, and the outer surface of this holder is provided with a facing 9 of flexible inelastic material to prevent the holder from being unduly stretched and splitting.
lVith the construction of holding devices for the ends of umbrella ribs it will be seen that I have provided a simple, neat, and effective means for retaining the umbrella ribs in closed position, one wherein any number of ribs may be secured and held in secured position while the other ribs are inserted within the holder. It will be further seen that I have provided a flexible holding device for umbrella ribs having a resilient mouth whereby the device may be stretched or folded upon itself without danger of tearing or mutilating and which is adapted to be covered with a coating of the material of which the covering of an umbrella is constructed whereby a substantial continuation of the umbrella covering is presented when the umbrella is folded.
Having thus fully described the inven tion what is claimed as new is:
The combination with an umbrella, of a tip retainer secured upon the handle thereof, said retainer comprising a cone-shaped cup of elastic material having a facing of fiexi- 10 ble inelastic material, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERTHOLD M. NYE. Vitnesses E. L. CHLoPIoK, JNo. W. MooRHEAD.
