Description

JESSE E. SALKELD, OF DUNLO, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application led March 28, 1908. Serial No. 423,874.
To all whom it may concer/n.'
Be it known that I, JEssE E. SALKELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunlo, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Rail-Joint; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in. rail-joints and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable device of this character which will present a smooth, continuous tread to `the car wheels passing thereover. l
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which neither bolts nor Jfish-plates will be needed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a rail-joint embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device. Q
Referring to the drawings, 1, and 2 designate the two ends of the ordinary rail-road rails which are beveled as shown, the ends of each beveled portion being V-shaped as shown at 3 and engages a V-shaped recess 4.-. The beveled piece 2 is provided with oblique tongues 5 which engage recesses 6 of similar coniguration. The recess 6 extends from the tread of the rail down to the center. Each member of the joint is provided with a ange 7.
In order to provide against the weakening oi the tie by reason of the various elements included in this invention, the ties are provided with enlargements 8, which is ample reinforcement for all parts subject to strain.
As clearly shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings the beveled portions do not extend entirely across the tread of the rail. The recess 6 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing extends only half the way down from the top of the rail. This forms a shoulder 6a for the support of the tongue 5. The purpose of this shoulder 6aL is to keep both ends of the rail in registration dwith each other, as will be readily understoo It will be seen that my invention is strong and durable, and that it can be applied to all rails of either street cars or railway lines, and that the ends of the rails are connected and securely held together without bolts or iishplates.
What is claimed is,
The combination of a pairl of rails having beveled ends, one of said beveled ends being provided with an oblique tongue, said other beveled end being provided with a similarly shaped recess extending from the top down and terminating at a point near the center of said rail, said termination forming a shoulder 6a by which the treads of both beveled portions are held in even registration, with each other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specicationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JESSE E. SALKELD.
