HOISTING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. BRADFORD, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hoisting Mechanism, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention more particularly relates to hoisting mechanism of the class which is mounted on the boom of a steam shovel, and its object is to provide simple, durable, and efficient means whereby the mechanism may be controlled from a position on the car body upon which the boom is mounted and adapted to swing.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompan ing drawings: Figure -1 is a side view, in elevation, of the forward portion of a steam shovel, illustrating an application of my invention Fig. 2, a plan view, with the upper portion removed; Fig. 3, a transverse section, on the line a: x of Fig. 1, and; Fig. 4, a vertical section, through the base plate and tubular bearing.
My invention is herein exemplified as applied in connection with a steam shovel, the operative mechanism of Which is mounted upon a car body, 1, which is supported, adj acent to its ends, on trucks, 2. A base plate, 3, is secured u on the floor of the car body, and an inclined boom, 4, is connected, at its lower end, to a collar, 5, which is fitted to turn on a vertical hollow or tubular bearing, 6, on the bed plate. A swing circle, 6, is secured to the boom at its lower end, and carries a pair of hoisting engines, 7, and the upper end of the boom is supported b guys, 8. A pair of thrusting engines, 9, is ed to the boom, steam being supplied to said engines by a pipe, 10, leading from the boiler and controlled by a throttle valve, 11, which is operated by a lever, 12. The exhaust pipe, 12*, of the engines, 9, and the exhaust pipe, 13, of the hoisting engines, 7, are connected to an elbow, 14, which is fitted to turn in the upper end of a fixed exhaust pipe section, 15, secured to the car body, from which ipe another fixed exhaust pipe section, 16, eads to a desired point of discharge. The joint between the elbow, 14, and fixed pipe section, 15, is kept properly tightened by a spring, 15 (Fig. 3) supported on the car body and bearing on the lower end of the ipe section, 15. A ram cylinder, 17, fitted with a piston which actuates the usual clutch mechanism to tighten or loosen a friction clutch, through a clutch shaft, 18, is fixed on the boom, above and adjacent to the hoisting engine, 7, the movements of the piston or ram and the clutch shaft, 18, being controlled by a valve moving in a chest on the ram cylinder and fixed upon a valve stem, 19.
The mechanism, so far as above described, is that which is well known in the art and does not, in and of itself, form part of my present invention.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a horizontal rock shaft, 20, which is journaled in bearings on the boom, 4, above the hoisting engines, 7, and has fixed upon it an arm, 21, which is coupled, by a link, 22, to one arm of a bell crank or angle lever, 24, the other arm of which is, in turn, coupled to the stem, 19, of the controlling valve of the ram cylinder, 17. An arm, 25, fixed upon the rock shaft, 20, and extending to the axial line of the fixed exhaust pipe section, 15, about which axial line the boom swings, is coupled to a swivel, 26, which is fitted to turn on a vertically movable rod, 27, which passes downwardly through the tubular bearing, 6, of the boom, preferably to plane below the car floor, the axis of the swivel being coincident with the axis of the movement of the boom. The lower end of the rod, 27, is coupled to one arm of a bell crank or angle lever, 28, journaled on the exhaust pi e section, 15, and the other arm of said bel crank is coupled, by a rod or link, 29, to an actuating lever, 30, pivoted on the frame or floor of the car body.
In the operation of the ap liance, the conis moved in one or the other direction, as desired, by the lever, 30, and the intermediate connections above described, and the clutch shaft, 18, is correspondingly moved, to tighten or loosen the frictional members, as the case may be. It will be seen that this operation may be readily effected without regard to the position in which the boom may stand, or Into which it may be moved, inasmuch as all the connections between the rod, 27, and the valve stem, 19, move coincidently with the boom, and are coupled to the rod, 27 in line with the axis of the movement of the boom, thereby obviating any liability to accidental or undesired movement of the valve stem.-
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications of the structural trolling valve stem, 19, of t e ram cylinder,
details of my invention may be made without departure from its spirit and operative principle, and I do not therefore limit it to the specific form of construction herein described and shown.-
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a hoisting mechanism,- the combination of a fixed support, a boom adapted to swing about an axis thereon,- a ram cylinder mounted on the boom, an actuating lever mounted on the fixed support, articulated connections coupling said actuating lever with the controlling valve of the ram cylinder, and a swivel in the line of said connections for effecting their operation in any position of the boom.
2. In a hoisting mechansm, the combination of a fixed support, a boom adapted to swing about an axis thereon, a ram cylinder mounted on the boom, an actuating lever mounted on the fixed support, a rod fitted to swivel with the controlling valve oftheram cylinder.
3. In a hoisting mechanism, the combination of a fixed support, a boom adapted to swing about an axis thereon, a ram cylinder mounted on the boom, a vertically movable rod fitted to traverse on the fixed support, means for actuating said vertically movable rod, a rock shaft journaled on the boom, connections coupling said rock shaft with the controlling valve of the ram cylinder, and a swivel coupling said rock shaft with the vertically movable rod, in the line of the axis of the movement of the boom.
