PATENT oEEioE;
oVEnALLs.
Specification of Letters Patent..
fatented Dec. 1, 1908` Application filed April 30, 1908. Serial No. 430,202,
. ofilllinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementl in Overalls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. l-Ieretofore overalls have been provided with pockets for receiving tools, nails, and
other articles, arranged in appropriate posi tions upon the garments so that they may be readily accessible by the wearcrs of the garments, but so far as I am aware, there has been no provision of a special pocket for carrying a handkercliicf-` So also overalls have heretofore been provided With safety Watch pockets, but these pockets being on the outside accumulate dirt and gritty substances which mar or scratch the watch.
The object of this invention is to provide overalls with a pocket separate from the usual pockets for tools and other articles, which will be unexposed and yet in a convenient place to receive a handkerchief, and from which the handkerchief may be readil)I removed for use. and as readily replaced.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety.r Watch pocket with openings at its bottom through which any dirtor gritty substance that may iind its way into the pocket will escape, thus preventingr the accuinulation of such substances in the pocket and so avoiding injury to the Watch.
The invention consists in overalls having a bib front provided with a lining or backing stitched thereto and left op'en at one edge to constitute a rear pocket, and a combined safety Watch and pencil pocket having openings at its bottom for the escape of gritty substances froin said pocket., all as I will proceed to now more particularl)r set forth and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings, .illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear view, in perspec* tive, showing the rear pocket slightly bulged with a handkerchief therein. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the left hand portion of the bib front, showing the o enings at the bottoni of the Watch pocket s ightly bulged.
The invention is herein shown as applied to overalls of usual or conventional form or l pattern, but it is equally applicable to other forms or patterns of overalls wherein a bib i front is employed, and to overalls and other garments of any kind wherein a watch pocket is desirable.
l and 2 are the usual leg portions, provided with the usual front pockets 3, 3, and rear pocket 4, for the reception of tools and other articles. i
5 and are the usual shoulder-straps.
7 and S are the usual bib sections extond ing upwardly from the waist-line of the garment. i
A lining or backing is secured to the bib ,section and stitched thereto in such manner i as to forni a space between said lining or bac-king and the material of the bib to constitute a pocket, the material of the bib and said `lining orbacking being left unstitched at a convenient place to forni an entrance to said pocket. 1
As herein shown, and in the preferred construction, tlic right hand bib section Tis provided at the rear with a lining or backing 9 which is secured to the bib section 7 by joining it thereto by the stitching at the cen.- ter seam l0 of the two bib sections, and at the Waist-line by a line of stitching 11. As
tion of the outer inclined edge of the bib section 7, and. said edge is henimed, asiat 12, and left unstitched from the bib section, the remaining upperand outer edges of the lining or backing 9 being secured to the bib sectionby the lines of stitching 13 and 14, respectively, of the upper and side henis of the bib section.
The lining or backing 9 and the bib section 7 as thus constructed and stitched together forni a convenient pocket 'for the reception of a handkerchief or any other article of use to a user of overalls, and when used for a handkerchief, the handkerchief may lbe' placed therein and will be out of the way of the wearer and is readily accessible for use, and may as readily be replaced in the pocket. And furthermore, by the provision of this pocket, the otherpockets of the overalls,
by the wearers handkerchief.
The front of the left hand bib section 8 is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the lining or backing 9 has its upper right hand corner cut at a` greater angle or inclination than the iinclma-` soY `io5 which are provided for the reception of tools and other articles, will not be inonopohzed ,l
provided with a combined safety Watch and 110 at its bottoni endeuter edges by lines of I' stitchingr 16 end 17, respectively, .find provided With a short vertical opening or slit 18S opening into the safety Watch il-ioehet. The. hne. of stitching 16 is interrupted :i short distance from the opposite lower corners oi" the 1 pocket and preferably terminates in short j iroin sind outer side edge stitching to the up- -verticel lines of stitching, thereby leaving' portions of the hennned lower edge ol the piece 15 disconnected from the bib section i to forni vents or openings 19 ntthe lower corners oi`A the Watch pocket, whereby any dirt or gritty substance that may -i'ind its 'mty into the pocket will esca-pe or be dislodged therefron'i, and thus prevent the n-ccuinuletion of' such substances in the pocket to nier or scratch the ense of the Watch. A line of 1 stitching 20 to one side of the-stitching 17 'forms :in upright pene-il pocket. The upper edge of the piece 15 is secured to the bib 'sectionrby e line olt stitching 21 extending to within a short distance of its outer edge to leave an ent-renee opening into the pencil pocket.
I have herein shown 'the linndlierehief pocket formed upon the right hand side of the bib only, but l Wishto be understood its notl limiting my invention to this :irre-ngement of the poeliet, as itis within my invention to arrange a pocket upon both sides` oll the rear of the bib, or n single pocket upon either side thereof.
lt is to be understood that the invention is not limited to any pnrtieuler shape of Watch pocket, or to env particular felnipe ol' the open bottoni portion thereof, or to the number or location of the openings for the escape 0f dirt, excepting in so 'fer es such opening or openings are of n kind end arrangement edge ot' the bib pert wey along its outer side edge, :rnd lei't unettitehed along seid edge `)er .ni-rt ol the bib therebv 'lorininv e inouth i o b 'tor the pocket arranged b21-eli of tlie edge oi' the bib.
2. Overalls having nr bib7 e lining?r or back# ing secured nt one edge to the center of seid bib, and having its lower edge secured to said bib by e line oi stitchingr :it the waist line, and having its upper eorner eut ntzin angle to the side edge. o1' the bib, und having the re- ',niztinder of its top :ind side edges secured by the stitching of' the heins at the upper and side edges el' the bib respectively end the cut-away edge left unstitched to iiorin a side opening between seid bib end lining or backing beck of sind inwnrdlyiroin the edge of the bib, the material oi the bib and seid lining or backing constituting` ey pocket upon the rear of the bib.v
B.' Overalls having a watch pocket constructed with unstite-hed portions et its lower corners with en intermediate stitched portion,- to forni openings et the opposite lower corners of the pocket for the escape of dirt and other 'gritty substances from the pocket.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hzind this 21st dey of April A. D. 1908.
