LAWRENCE HAND, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
STEAM-TRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
Application filed May 1, 1908. Serial No. 430,319.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE HAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Trap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to water level regulators, and more particularly such as are adapted to be connected to boilers, tanks, or the like, for maintaining a constant water level in the same and preventing the level from exceeding a predetermined height.
An object of this invention is to provide a water level regulator for boilers or the like, which has automatic means for keeping the water at a constant level, thus obviating in the case of boilers, the danger of flooding.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described adapted to communicate with a boiler or the like at a point which the water level should not exceed, and having an outlet valve directly operable by the overflow after the water has risen above the predetermined line in the boiler, to cause it to return to the normal level.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation of the device as applied to a boiler, showing parts in section.
Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my. invention, it should be understood that I provide a water level regulator which is adapted to be connected to boilers, tanks, and the like, to prevent the contents of the latter from exceeding a predetermined level.
Although my device is applicable to tanks, it is, however, especially adapted for use with steam boilers. WVhen used in connection with the latter, it is connected to the boiler at a point which the water level is not to exceed, by means of a pipe which extends to a casing. Arranged within the casing is a float which operates an outlet valve. When the water in the tank rises above the predetermined level it flows out through the pipe into the casing and raises the float; this opens the valve and allows the water to escape from the easing into a well or waste tank. My device permits the connecting of the steam pipe of the engine directly to the dome of the boiler.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a boiler of common or preferred form. Arranged at an opening 2 which is at the predetermined maximum level of the water in the boiler, is a pipe 3 having a valve 4 at some suitable point thereof. The latter is for closing the pipe 3 should itbe necessary to repair the regulator, without interfering with the operation of the engine. The pipe 3 enters the bottom of a casing 5 at an opening 6 therein. The casing has an annular rim 5 to support a removable cover 7 secured in placeby means of bolts 8. A gasket is provided between the cover and the rim.
Arranged within the casing isa hollow float 9 of any suitable material, such as sheet metal or the like, and provided with a shank 10. The cover 7 has a threaded neck 12 and a cap 13 adapted to be removably mounted thereon, and forming a stufling box having a gland 14: through which the shank 10 of the float extends. The upper end 11 of the shank 10 is bifurcated to receive the end of a lever 15, the latter being pivotally mounted by means of a rivet 16. An adjustable weight 17 is arranged on the lever 15 for regulating the latter, and can be held in any desired position by a set screw 17'. An upright 18, having a plurality of openings 19 near the upper end thereof, adjustably supports the lever 15, the latter having a slot 20 adapted to register with one of the openings 19 of the upright, and to receive a pin 21 located in the registering openings. A further lever 22 is similarly supported on an upright 23 by means of a slot 22 and a pin 22, the support having a plurality of openings 23 for the purpose. Connecting the corresponding outer ends of the levers 15 and 22, is a pivotal link 24 secured in place by means of rivets or bolts 25. Arranged within an opening 26 at the bottom of the casing 5, is an outlet pipe 27 having a valve 28. An operable'stem 29 having a bifurcated end 30 pivotally secured to the end of the lever 22 remote from the end connected to the link 24, servesoperatively to connectthe lever to the valve. The outlet pipe 27 may be connected to a waste tank or well.
In the operationof my device, when the Water in the boiler rises above the predeten mined level, it escapes through the pipe 3 into the casing 5. \Vhen a suflicient quantity of the Water has entered the casing, the float 9 rises, and through the medium of the levers l5 and 22 respectively, and the link 24, opens the valve 28 in the outlet pipe 27. This permits the Water in the casing to escape. When the water in the boiler has fallen below the level of the inlet pipe 3, the float will settle to its original position after the escape of the water from the casing, and the valve 28 will close. The Weight 17 in connection with the means provided at the uprights 23 and 18, respectively, permits of a very delicate adjustment of the levers.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
In a device of the class described, a casing, an inlet pipe communicating with the casing,
a float in the casing, an outlet pipe for the connection of each of the levers said means comprising brackets, each provided With a vertical series of openings, each of said levers being longitudinally slotted, and a bolt traversing the slot and one of the openings.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
LA'WRENCE HAND. \Vitnesses WVM. P. MOGILLIN,
JEREMIAH A. KEILEY.
