Be it known that I, JoHN B. DAVIS, citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use- .ful Improvements in Self-Measuring Oil- Pumps; and l do declare the followin r to be a full,vclear, and exactdescription o the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and valves are rendered easy of access and the` construction is greatly simplified. It is desirable inV these self-measuring pumps that they 'should be devoid of the 4least possible complication in order that the users thereof may beenabled to utilize them in the dispensing of oils without necessitating the manufacturers of the pumps giving said pumps attention after they have been placed in the hands of the users.
Preceding a more detailed description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of whichW Flgure 1, is a vertical mid-sectional elevation of the pump connected up and in an operati-ve condition. In this view the upper portion of the piston rod and the superstructure are removed and a portion of the middle part of the pump is broken out to facilitate illustration. Fig. 2, is an illustration of the pump in its entirety, the same being an elevation thereof. Fig. 3, is an elevation of the pump looking from a position Iat right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a view on the line a a of Fig. 2.
In a detail description of the invention,

' The pump has but one cylinder 1 which is inclosedy at its uppel` end by a head 2 in l the form. of a special casting with` internal screw-threaded bosses and a central aperture through which the piscn rodA 5 passes,
there being a stuing box 6 united to t-he head 2. The lower end of the cylinder 1 is inclosed by a base which is also of special oonstruction and consists of the parts 7 and 8, the latter being the stand which supports the ump. Between the base portions Pfand 8 t ere are oppositely disposed internal screwsthreaded openings 9 similar to the pipe openings 3 in the head.
Connected to the screw-threaded parts 9 9 of the base are special fittings in the form of pipes 10 and 11, the former being a straight pipe while the pipe 1.1 is in the form of an elbow. The pipe 10 is a comparatively short tt-ing with which the suction or inlet ipe 12 is connected by a screw-threaded Joint. The pipe fitting 10 has an 1nterior portion 13 which provides a seat for a' suction valve 14, vthe stem 15of which is guided in a detachable screw-cap 16 which is removable in order that ac- `which forms a. guide for the. valve stem 18 and also enables ready access to the valve. T he caps 16 and 19 screw into thelupper portion of the pipe fittings10 and 11 and their upper ends are provided with extensions which permit of the convenient use of a wrench in removing and replacing said caps.
The suction pipe fitting 10 is provided with an internal screw-threaded T extension 20 which receives a nipple 21, the latter being connected to the lower end of a valve casing 22 which stands parallel to the pump cylinder and is connected at its upper end to a pipe 23. The valve casing 22 rovides a seat `24 for a check ,or suction va ve 25, the stem 26 of which i's guided in acentral portion of the casing 22.

Iquantities of the T fitting provide the inlet to the upper portion oit the pump cylinder above the piston. The valve-14, which as before stated, is within the pipe 10, controls the inlet to the lower portion of the. cylinder.
Connected to the discharge elbow 1l is a discharge pipel 3l for the lower end or the cylinder which receives the contents of that portion of the cylinder through the valve l? in said elbow. l
The discharge pipe 3l is joined at its upper end to a short pipe or nipple 32 by means oit a union 29, and the nipple or short pipe 32is united to a fitting 33 which has an internal portion 34 that provides a seat for a discharge valve 35 tor the upper end of the cylinder. The stem 37' of this discharge valve is guided in a screw-threaded cap 36 which is united to the upper side of the discharge fitting 33. lt will thus be seen that the iitting 33 provides two separate outlets, one Jfor the lower end of the cylinder through the pipes 3'1 and 32, and one from the upper end of the cylinder through the valve 85, said fitting 33 having an outlet or o ening 38 which dischar es into a pipe not s own. The lower end o the cylinder disportion of the unit of measure charges the other portion ot the unit of measure, but owing to a certain portion of the contents of the cylinder being displaced by the piston rod, it is essential that the ,lower portion of the cylinder or that portion below the piston shall discharge the greater portion of the unit of measure, the excess being equal to theaniount of oil displaced by the piston rod above the piston. The upper end 'of the piston rod is connected to an operating rack 39 which has a foot 40 which is joined immediately to the upperend ot said piston rod. rhe raclr 39 is guided at its upper end in a head 4l which is supported on the upper end ot the pump by rods 42 which screw into aperture'd bosses The rack 39 and 'therewith the piston and piston rod, are reciprocatedl by means of a pinion 43 mounted upon a shaft 44 and driven by a crank handlel 45, the shaft 44 beingl mounted in the head 4l. The piston 46 consists of upper middle and lower portions which incloseleathersd? which are clamped between said piston portions by nuts 48, the leathers being extended to lit against the Walls of the cylinder and being constantly expanded to malte the tit snug by means of coil springs 49 which vencircle the piston and lie between the parts of the pisvton proper and the leathers.
-The head 2 of the cylinder is provided with stop marks 50 which indicate various oil to be dispensed from the cylinder, for example, pints, quarts, two quarts, one gallon, two gallons, etc. Co-
operating with these stops is a lever 51 which is fixed to a rod 52, upon which rod there are several stops 53 which are rigidly united to said rod. These stops 53 are placed outl of alineinent with each other as shown in Fig. 4, and by moving the rod 52 by means of the handle 5l toany one of the marks 50, l

It will be understood that' the fundamental requirement of self-measuring pumps of this character, is that they shall measure accurately. .ln order that 4this may be accomplished in a single cylinder doubleacting pump, it is necessary that each measure shall be taken from above and be.
