UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL A. DEAN, OF WESTON, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE J. MoQUAIN, OF WESTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application filed August 17, 1908. Serial No. 448,831.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL A. DEAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Weston, in the county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Brake Systems for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in air brake systems for railway cars, and has for its object the provision of an emergency brake that may be operated by a member of the crew to stop the train in emergencies of which the locomotive crew are in ignorance, such as the derailment of one of the cars in the train, breaking of an axle, etc., and consists of a branch pipe coupled to the connection between the cars and extending to the top of the car and provided with a valve that can be opened by a member of the crew to release the air from the system to apply the brakes.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure l is a fragmental View of two.
freight cars showing my improvement installed thereon, and Fig. 2, an enlarged view of a fragment of the train pipe and my branch pipe improvement coupled thereto.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the two views. I A indicates the freight cars having the air-brake train pipe B secured thereto, with the coupling pipe C connecting pipes B on the two cars.
D indicates the ordinary hand brake wheel mounted on top of the car.
My invention consists in securing a T- joint 1 in the coupling G and securing a flexible pipe 2 thereto, having a valve 3 tapped on its free end with a rigid pipe 4 secured to the valve and bent to form a hook 5 to hook over the brake-wheel D or to be secured in any other manner to the top of the car. The valve 3 may be of any suitable type and operated by a removable key or a handle 5, secured to the valve-stem.
It will be apparent that by opening the valve 3 the pressure on the train pipe B will be released, and the brakes set, and that any number of branch pipes may be installed on a train, one for each car, if thought advisable, to the end that the control of the train would be instantly available to any member of the crew who might discover anything wrong and the danger of serious trouble, and perhaps wreck, would be avoided.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with two cars, airbrake pipes secured thereon, and a couplingpipe connecting said airbrake pipes, a branch pipe coupled to said coupling-pipe, a valve in said branch pipe, and a rigid pipe secured to .the valve, bent to form a hook and secured to one of the cars to hold the branch pipe in position, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with two cars, airbrake pipes secured thereon, and a couplingpipe connecting said air-brake pipes, a T- joint secured in said coupling-pipe, a flexible pipe secured to said T-joint, a valve secured to said flexible pipe, and a rigid pipe secured to said valve, bent to form a hook and secured to one of the cars to hold the branch pipe in position, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL A. DEAN.
