To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, LOUIS P. D es. Ihon, in the county of Herkii'ner and Sta e New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Type-W er Rihbz'm Feeds: and e h reh}; declare that the foisowi 1 a. a1, and exact. de scription L wh trill enabie others skilled in t to which it appertains to make same reference being to the arr- A ng Wings. to the letters of reference marks thereon, which form part. this specific T e object of in? present lllVQZlUOH is to provide an. imp= ribbon feeding in anisrn for type ing machines, which is simple and eiiicient in I operation and arranged to automatically reverse the feed of the ribbon.
Fi 'iire 1 shows a partial sectional View of the .rame of the typewriter machine with my improved mechanism in position therein. Fig. .2 is a plan view of part of a type- -writer machine with my improved mechanism introduced therein. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through one of the spools constituting 5 portion of the mechanism, this section heing talreh at angles to the section shown in Fig. l. Flg. 4 is an enlarged detail showing features of the device, in connection with a section of a portion of the much of z 3* is as is tosses sary to illustrs; n.
Referri te th-e d. is usually terms-t p oist-s per portion oi the IL oi the machine. In.
he or opposite corners of the top of the mac top plate a there provii dep es 'b-b adapted to receive :Lnr 1 of the mechanism. lrnmezi cups Z) are located the ribbon spec the seine? sing: mounted on e ing' sgindie is the cup 5 and projecting we lly. the lower end er the sleeve (Z there is pro- "v'ided e gear ninicn f to the sleeve and thiis to the col so on the spindle a when newer is applied. In the plane of the pinion there is' provided the driving pinion g adapted to mesh there was. and mounted en the swinging upper end of the shaft h. The shaft hat its l'owfver 18 provided with a gear pinion i mesh ng with a gear pinion. j on the horizontal shaft The shaft 7'; is mounted in suitable fixed hearing the trains and provides bearings for the .illeting hanger Z having bearings which the shaft 71 is mounted. There is a shaft ll: on each side of the machine, and these shafts are provided at their rear ends with hevr. l gear pinions m me k; with beveled g'clu pinions 'il provided in the heck shaft 0. Power for driving the ribbon spools is applied to the shaft 0 and causes t e shafts is and ?a on the one side of the 1111 1e to rotate in unison with the similar shaft on the other side of the machine but in the op posite direction. The upper sfx'l'flgiilg ends of the hangers Z on the opposite sides of the machine are connected by a rod which spaces these hangers at such a distance that only one at a time of the gear piuions Q can engage the pinion 1" connected with the spool. This rod p is provided with a projection Q having preferably three teeth engaged by a spring click 1" mounted on the frame.
. Attached to the underside of the spool lay the depending arms 8, which are preferably connected at their upper ends by a semi-circulai bar It, is the semi-circular cam carrier 14-, This cam carrier u at its opposite extremities is hinged to the lower ends of arms s indicated by s. Thee-am provided with a cam or pted to engage with the f and preferably provided on face with three or fouri'c th of .pe to adapt them to me "1th i or" the pinion For con sition of the cam carrier 11. i with arm 2:: Whicl through a slotted opening 1; things of 1 upper end nst ' suihcientl under e x, to permitthe tee h of find their meshing pom ingthe c; I I-EGIL The coin and the gears quite sharp at the A l tate their entering.

The ribbon, of course, is attached at each end to the core of the. spools c and betweenthe spools passes in close position to the clined position shown in Fig. 4 where the cam will not engage with the gear pinion g as the spool revolves. When, however, the ribbonhas been unwound from a spool sufficiently to release the arm w, the cam carrier drops into its horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. Then as the spool c revolves under the influence of the ribbon being unwound therefrom, the cam v is brought around into position to engage with the gear g.- As the gear 9 is always driven, it furnishes its own power to force the cam a past itself and in so doing the gear 9 is forced over by the cam towards the gear f. In this operation the spring click rvride's out of one of the depressions in which the point engages and sufliciently over the high point so that the action of the spring click completes the movement and throws the gear 9 out of engagement with the cam v and into engagement with the'gear 7. By I reason of the connecting .rod p when the gear pinion g of one side of the machine is being thrown into engagement with the gear pinion f on that side, the one on the opposite side is thrown out making the spool on the opposite side of the machine then the free spool. Thefirst partial revolution of the empty spool causes the ribbon to bind the swinging end of the arm w against the core and elevates the cam carrier into its inoperative position. It is obvious-that the spool driving mechanism may be shifted manually at anytime, and for this purpose a knob or handle 2 is provided.
. While the teeth on the cam a are preferable, it is obvious that the teeth may be omitted and that other modifications and changes in the construction can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
