Be it known that 1, Turnos L. Kxsrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of W'oodstock, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Supports for Type-Writer Shift-Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref` crenre being had to the accom anying drawings, and to the letters of re nce marked thereon, which form a part of this` specification.
This invention relates to a. ty writing ma.- chine shift-frame upon wine the paperearriage is supported and has endwise movement und whic itself has backward and forward sliiftin movement upon the machineframe in orlr to bring the platen and the paper thereon in position to receive im res- .sions from a plurality of types carrie( by each cf the type-bars of the machine.
The invention is more particularly applicable to machines of the Oliver ty e, in which the shift-raine is provided wit two horizontal, transversely arranged guide-bars on which the paper-carriage rests and travels, and in which sind guide-bars project at their ends beyond theshit-frame proper and extend laterally outside of the frame of the machine and are made of suicient length to ro rly su port the carriage, whatever may ne t xe lengtli of the latter.

The standard 17 consists of a tubular upright bodv portion having at its lower end a horizontal, outwardly extending flan which is secured by screws to the to of e base-board. The upper adjustable d 18 of the standard is provided with a cylindric stem 20 adapted to enter the upper part of the hollow standard 17 and screw-threaded to receive a. nut 21, adapted to rest on the to of the standard 1T and form an adjustab e stop to determine the vertical position of the head 1S. A set-screw 22 is inserted through the side of said standard and bears at its 1n ner end against the stem 19. Said set-screw 22 is inserted through the side of said standard and bears at its inner end against the stem 20. Said set-screw serves to hold the head 1S from movement when adjusted. The head 1S has the form of a dat plate arranged in a vertical plane extending from front to rear with respect to the machine, and is provided with a horizontal upper edge, and is also provided, centrally of said plate, with a. transverse pivot pin 23 which projects from the opposite sides of said head.

As a. result of the construction described, therefore, when the u per end of the supporting arm is Swingin orwardly, the arm will rest and turn on t e lower end of the forward set-screw, the rea-most set-screw will rise from contact with the head 18, and the arm itself will be correspondingly lifted. The degree of lifting movement so lmparted to the supporting arm will correspond with the lifting movement which, as set forth in said prior patent No. 837,611, is imparted to the forward end of the shift-frame and guide-bars through the swinging movement of the supporti links 8, 8 in the backward and forward s ifting movement of the shift-frame from its central position. From this it will be understood that the lower or contact ends of said set-screws will be located at such distance apart that when the shift-frame is moved or swim forwardly or rearwardly and the upper en of the said supporting ari n and the end of the guide-bar, with which it is connected, is moved to an equal extent, the saidupper end of the supporting arm will be given i-isin movement corresponding with that imparte to the shift-frame by the said oscillatory suspension links 8, 8, and the end of the guide-bar which is sustained by the supporinng arm will he lifted the same extent as is the shift-frame. It follows that the supporting arm, mounted as described, when used in connection with the shift-fiume supported by pivoted suspension links, will not only afford backward and forward movement of the ends of the guide-bar wit the shift-frame to which it is attached, but will also afford sligit rising and falling movement in the en of the said guide-bar, corresponding with the risiand falling movement imparted to the 'ft-frame by said suspension links.

Said oblique brace-rods, as shown in the drawings, extend from the rear end of the guide-stem forward and outwardly in a divergent direction to the forward guide-bar 4, to which ide-bar the forward ends of said brace-ro s 30, 30 are attached at points about midway between sides of the shiftframe propel' and the outer ends of said ide-har. The rear guide-bar Si being coated considerably above the level of the forward guide-bar 4, said brace- rods 30, 30 extend beneath the said rear guide-bar and are substantially horizontal. The employment of the brace- rods 30, 30 in connection with the forward iidc-bar 4 only, serves to revent horizontal tlexure or movement of th guide-bars, because the engagement of the grooved supporting rollers o the carriage with the front and Arear guide-bars serves to maintain the saine in parallel relation, or to insure the movement of the ends of the rear :ide-bar with those of the forward guidenir.
According to the details of construction illustrated, said guide- bars 30, 30 are connected at their rear and forward ends with the guide-stem 11 of the shift-frame and with the forward ide-bar 4, as follows: As clearly seen in ig. 6, a transversely arra yoke ieee 31 is attached centrally to t e rear en of the said aide-stem 11 by means of a screw-threadedgstud 32 on the rear end of said rod, which stud is screwthreaded to en a screw-threaded aperturein the oke-piece. The rearwardly bent ends of the yokepiece are apertured to receive the rear en s of the brace-rods, which latter are provided with nuts 33, 33-bctween which the said ends ot the oke-piece are clam ed and by which the race-rods are rigi y secured to said yoke-piece. The forward ends of said bracerods 30, 30 are connected with the forward gi1ide-bar 4 by means of blocks 34, 34 which are 'secured to the under surfaces of and )reject downwardly from said guide-liars.
o the lower faces of said blocks 30,34 the forward ends of the brace-rods are attached by screws, as illustrated in Fig. The said connectin blocks 34, 34 bei attached to the lower sur 'ace of the guidewar are in position to avoid interference with the movement of the supporting rollers of the carriage along the guide-bar, while the ends of the brace-rods are located at a sutlicient die` tance below the guide-bar to prevent contact therewith of the said sup rtin rollers, as the latter travel along t e gui e-bur.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a typewritng machine frame, a paper-carriage. a shiftframe having shiftin movement. un the machine frame, said shi t-franie being rovidcd with a guide-bai', and supporting links for the shift-frame, pivotally connected with the machine frame above the level of the shiftframe, of auxiliary supports for the ends of said guide-ber, com rising oscillating supporting arms, and xed members on which said arms are mounted, said supporting arms and fixed members having contacting parts which are horizontally segarated from each othei to afford rising and lling movement in the ends of the ide-bar when said arms are swung fern' y and backwardly from the centi-al position thereof. v
2. The combination with a typewriting machine frame, a paper-carriage, a shiftrame having shiftinfg movement on the inachine frame said shi -rame being roi'ided with a guide-bar, and supporting inks for the shift-frame, pivotally connected with the machine frame above the level of the shiftframe, of auxiliary supports for the ends of said guide-bar, comprising oscillating supporting arms and lixed members on which said arms are supported, said arms being loosely connected with the fixed members by means preventing horizontal shiftinlof arm on said fixed members, and e said arms and fixed members having contacting parts horizontally rated from each other to afford rising and alling movement in the ends of the guide-bar when said arms are swung forwardly or rearwardly from the central position thereof.

'I'he combination with a typewriting machine frame, a paper-carrie and a carriage shift-frame mounted and ving shift ing movement on the machine frame and provided with a guide-bar, of an auxiliary su port for the said guide-bar located outsi e of the machine frame and comprising a fixed standard and an oscillating su rting arm mounted on said standard an iaving both rising and fallin@ movement thereon, said arm being engaged:I at its upper end with the guide-bar.

The combination with a typewriting machine frame. a paper-carriave and a shiftiaine mounted and having 'ft' movement on the machine frame, said shi frame being provided with a guide-bar for the carriage, of an auxiliary support for said iidebar comprising a fixed standard provi ed at its top with a vertically adjustable member, and an oscillntin supporting arm, loosely connected at its owcr end with said vertically adjustable member and engaged at its upper end with the guide-bar.

An auxiliary support for the end of a shift-frame guide-bar, comprising a tubular standard, a head provided with a stein which extends within and has vertically adjnstable connection with the standard, and au oscillating ezmlm-ting arm loosely mounted on said h 6. An auxiliary support for a shift-frame froide-bar, comprising a tubular standard, a head provided with a stem which enters said -means holdin the lower en standard, an adjustable stop on the stem, adapted to rest on the top of the standard, clamping means for lioldmg the stein from movement in the standard, and an oscillating supportin arm loosely connected at. its lower end wit i the said head.
7. Ali auxiliary support for a shift-freine guide-bar, com rising an oscillating supporting arm an a ilat, vertically arranged plate on which said arm is mounted, said plate being provided with a. horizontal pin extendi transversely thereof, and the lower en of the supporting arm being roiided with a crossliead having depen ing flanges which extend at opposite sides of the plate, and are provided with vertical slots for engagement with said pin.

An auxiliary support for a shift-frame guide-bar, comprising an oscillating supporting arm, a suppo member on which said arm is mounted, sai arm being loosely connected with the supportin member by of the arm from shifiin iorizoutally on the plate, and two vertical y arranged, horizontally sepa rated set-screws inserted in one of said parts and adapted for contact with the other pax-t to give rising and falling movement to the upper end of said supporting arm when swung forwardly or rearwardly from its central tion.
10. e combination with a typewi'iting machine frame, a paper-carriage and a cai'- riage shift-frame mounted and having shift ing movement on the machine frame, said shift-frame being provided with a carriage guide-bai', of auxiliary supports for the ends of the guide-bar. located outside of the carringe-frame, and oblique brace-rods attached to the rear end of the shift-frame and to the said guide-bar.
