ATTACHJVIENT FOR BINDERS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application filed January 2, 1908. Serial No. 408,976.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. H'Uenns, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Tyndall, in the county of Bonhomme and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Binders and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is in the nature of an attachment for self-binders or like agricultural implements and has for its object to entirely eliminate the pole, thereby relieving the neck of the draft animal from the weight of the same and preventing side draft.
A further object of the invention is to design an attachment of this character which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and can be readily applied to any of the usual forms of self-binders or analogous machines.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a portion of a binder having the invention applied there to. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the stub tongue as set at an angle. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device, portions being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4= 1 of Fig. 3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
For the purpose of illustration the attachment embodying the invention is shown as applied to a self-binder 1 of the usual construction, the tongue 2 of the said binder being cut off at approximately that point where the whifl'letree is usually applied, thereby leaving the machine with What may be termed a stub tongue. Castings 3 are applied to the extremity of the stub tongue 2 at the upper and lower sides of the same, the said castings being bolted to the tongue or otherwise rigidly secured thereto and also projecting beyond the tongue where they are formed with bearings loosely receiving a vertical shaft 1. The lower end of this vertical shaft 1 is provided with a casting 5 formed with bearings receiving a horizontal shaft or axle 6 having the ground wheels 7 mounted upon opposite ends thereof. These ground wheels serve to support the forward end of the stub tongue 2 and are mounted so as to be swung about a vertical axis when the machine is making a turn. Projecting forwardly from the bearing 5 within which the axle 6 is ournaled is a horizontal bar 8 hav ing the forward end thereof extended upwardly in a vertical direction as indicated at 9 and engaged by an arm 10 having the rear end thereof provided with a sleeve fitting between the projecting ends of the castings 3 and receiving the vertical shaft 4-. The vertical portion 9 of the bar 8 is provided with a plurality of openings 11 for the attachment of a draft evener of any approved type. It will thus be apparent. that any desired number of horses or other draft animals may be employed, but that the weight of the tongue instead of being carried by the animals in the usual manner will be entirely sustained by the wheels 7 and cooperating members.
Opposite sides of the stub tongue 2 connected to the body portion of the selfbinder 1 by means of the diagonal braces 12-, the forward ends of the braces being adjustably secured to the tongue by means of bolts adapted to pass through selected ones of a series of openings 13. With this construction it will be readily apparent that the stub tongue can be swung laterally from side to side and locked in the required position, thereby enabling the tongue to be set so as to enable the device to operate in the most effective manner in connection with any desired number of horses or draft animals.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination of a self-binder or like implement provided with a stub tongue carrying spaced projections, a vertical shaft j ournaled within the spaced projections, ground wheels :t the lower end of the vertical shaft, a bar projecting forwardly from the lower end of the vertical shaft and having the end thereof extended upwardly, and an arm engaging the upwardly projecting portion of the bar and provided with a sleeve receiving the vertical shaft and fitting between the before mentioned spaced projections.
2. The combination of a self-binder or like implement provided with a stub tongue, plates secured to the upper and lower faces of the extremity of the stub tongue and projecting beyond the same, a vertical shaft are journaled in the projecting ends of the said plates, a bearing at the lower end of the vertical shaft, a transverse axle j ournaled in the bearing, wheels mounted upon the axle, a bar extending forwardly from the bearing and having the end portion thereof projecting upwardly, and an arm engaging the up wardly projecting end of the bar and provided at its rear end with a sleeve fitting between the projecting ends of the before mentioned plates and receiving the vertical shaft.
3. The combination of a self-binder or like implement provided with a stub tongue, di
agonal brace members adjustably secured to the tongue to permit of the required ad ustment of the same, a bearing applied to the end of the stub tongue, a vertical shaft journaled in the bearing, wheels carried by the vertical shaft and serving to support the 1 stub tongue, a bar extending forwardly from I the lower end of the vertical shaft and having the end portion thereof projecting upwardly, and an arm connecting the up- I wardly projecting end of the bar to the veri tical shaft. t In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
