Description

THOMASISTEWAROFPHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVAN AND WILLIAM C.A STILES, OF
TO HIMSELFv IA,ASSIGNOR SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent N 90.405. dated M au 25. 1869.
DEPRQVEMENT Ul FILTERS.
A The Schedule referred to Ln then Letten Patent and making part of the um..
Pennsylvania, have in# i troleumand Lubricating and other Oils; and I do hereby' declare 'that thx .Jrlowing is a full, clear, and
exact'descripton of the construction and operation ot` I the same, referente being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical the said apparat-us, and
Figure 2, a horizontal dotted line e w of fig. l. A
Like letters of reference indicate the same parts when in both figures.
The crude petroleum and other similar hydrocmrbonliquids contain, besides water, a peculiar, thick, sedimentary substance, and often tine sand or grit, all ol' which require to be removed when the liquid is intended to bc used as a lubricant; and
The object of my apparatus is to cfiect the removal of the same in a more simple, rapid, and practical manner than heretofore.
The nature of my invention corrsistsin the construction and courbined anangemeut of devices hereinafter described, whereby the` said sedimentary and other impurities of the crude liquid are. arrested during its passage through the apparatus, and tho purified hydrocarbon-liquid discharged therefrom by gravitation, leaving the said impurities, which can afterward be removed with facility' from the apparatus, as occasion may from time to time require.
Referring to the drawings- A B is a closed chamber, of wood, or other suit-able material, in which is contained the principal portion of an apparatus, consisting of two sheet-metal cylin ders, C and D, supported upon and comn'runicatng with each other through a shcct-rnctal chamber, E, the cylinder C being provided with a detachable strainer,
longitudinal section of section of the same below the Y F, the cylinder D with a. removable or changtable stratum of gmnulatcd charcoal, G, or its' equivalent, secured between two detachable perforated diaphmgms, or foraminous plates, H II', and an outlet tribe, I, and the chamber E with an outlct tube, c', which is iut/ended to bc ttted with any suitable stop-cock, n'ot shown in the drawings.
The cylinder C projects the top ofthe chamberA B, is opcn at thc top, and is about three feet in diameter, and twenty fcet high from the top of the Vchamber E, and into this chamber E it opens, through a perforated diaphragm, c'.
The strainer F consists of three or -more layers of loose felt, f, or its equivalent, secured between a skeleton-frame of wi'rc,f, below, and a rim, f', of sheetmetal, above, and resting upon the diaphragm c', in thc lower part of the cylinder C, the fratnef and rimf" being attached to a rod, or stem, f, the upper' end of which-projects out above the mouth of the said cylinnpward vertically through der, and serves as a ready means o.' withdrawing and replacing the strainer F. (See tig. 1.)
The cylinder D is also about tin-oc feet iu diameter, but is only about irait' the height of the cylinder C, and, like the. latter, its lower end rests upon and opens into thc chamber E.
It has about one-third of' its length owupicd by a mass of gmnulatcd charcoal, clean sand, or other suitable filtering or purifying-substance, secured in areadily removable or changeable manner, at about midway' bctwccn its cnds, by rucaus of the two diaphragms H II', with a layer ot' any suitable straining-cloth between the said charcoal and each ofthe diaphragms.
Thc outlet-tube I extends from the space which if irrrrrmliately above the upper diaphragm, horizontally outward through the external A B.
The chaurbcr E has a bottom, cf', which slopesdownward trom Vcach ond of the same nearly bo its middle, at which latter part thc outlet-tube e projects through the sides of the same, and thc case, or outer chamber A Il, and is intended to have a stop-(mok attached tu it on thc outer side of the chamber A B.
Operation.
The liquid to be strained is to be strudily run into thc cylinder C, andkept at about the height of the faint line I therein, (sce fig. 1,) while, in consequence ofthe head thus kept up, thc liquid is rapidly filtered down, through the layers of thc fabn'cf', into the charnbcr E, and thence upward through thc filtering or fittingsubstance, (l, which is confined between the two perforated diaphmgms, H II', and thence, iu a condition free from all thc scdirncnmry and other objectionable impurities, out through the tube I, to'any suitable reservoir.
The water sinks tothe bottom of the chamber E, and floats the nil thereon, while thc grit and othersedimcntary matter are separated hy thc strainer F and filter G, all of which ccm he rcnrored with facility when necessary. i
In c old weather, steam isiutcndcd to be run through the outside containing-chamber A B, for the purpose of keeping the crude liquid as thin as possible.
I 'sblt io confine this apparatus to thtl particular dimensions or rnatcrials of construction stated hcrcin; hut, having fully described my invention,
'hat I claim, and desire to secure by Lettera Patent, is-
The cylindcr'C, with its detachable strainer F, the cylinder l), with its detachable or changeable filteringrncdum G, and outlet-tube` I, and the intermediate chamber E, with its outlettube if, thc said parts being combined together and arranged within a suitable chamber, at ily-so as to operate substantially' in the manner described, for the purpose specified.
'itnesscs: THOS. STEWART.
