JOSEPH RICHARD, OF GOATIGOOK, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANCOIS 'I'T- XAVIER EDOUARD BOUDREAU, OF SHERBROOKE, CANADA.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application filed July 2, 1908. Serial No. 441,627.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH RICHARD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Ooaticook, county of Stanstead, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ire-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to fire extinguishers, and more particularly to fire extinguishers for stove pipes.
Broadly speaking, it comprises a pipe section provided with a guide adapted to receive a slide or a an, containing water, to effectually cut 0 the draft in the portion of the pipe below the slide.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several views of the drawings, like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the invention applied; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the pipe; Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 33 of Fig. l; and, Fig. 4 is a plan view of the pan detached.
A pipe section 1 of any desired form may be used. This section is provided with a lateral opening in one side, and has guides 2 extending from the edges of the opening and forming an open ended box of a width equal to the diameter of the pipe. Through this box may be inserted either a plain slide or a pan 3. The slide or pan should be constructed so that, when inserted, it will completely close the pipe section and effectually cut off all draft from the portion of the pipe below it. The outer end of the box-like guide 2 is closed by a hinged flap or cover at, when the slide is not in place.
hen a pan is used instead of a slide, it is filled with water, so that the steam ascending from it will quench fire in the pipe above.
hen a fire is discovered in the pipe, the flap 4- is opened, and the pan 3 inserted. The pan fits snugly against the interior of the pipe, and completely cuts off all draft to the portion of the pipe below it, thus effectually putting out that portion of the fire. The heat within the pipe starts rapid generation of steam from the water in the pan. This steam rising in the pipe, puts out all fire in the section above the pan. The result is that the device serves to effectually and completely quench the fire throughout the full length of the pipe on both sides of it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fire extinguisher of the character described comprising, a pipe section provided with an opening, guides adjacent said opening, and a pan adapted to travel on said guides and to closesaid pipe.
2. A fire extinguisher of the character described comprising, a pipe section provided with a lateral opening, guides adjacent said opening, means for closing said opening, and a pan adapted to travel on said guides and to close said pipe.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH RICHARD.
