To all wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Mansfield Depot, county of Tolland, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pistons, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to piston mechanism specially adapted for compression cylinders, andihas special reference to compression or expansion mechanisms such as shown in my-ap lication, Serial Number 341,391, filed Octo r'31st, 1906 for improvement in ice-making machines, of which this application is a division;
Among the objects of my invention may be notedthe following: To provide a piston head which will be chea .of construction, effective inoperation, an incapable of corroding or rusting irrespective of whether it is used for steamer liquid compression; to provide a piston head composed of parts so combined as-torender' the same capable of being easilytakenapart for any purpose desired; and to provide a constructionwhereinthe several materials used, or which may be used, are adapted to practically universal use in connection with expansion or compnession mechanisms.
With the above objects in-view, and others whichwillhe setforth during the course of this description, the invention consists in the parts, features,elements,and combinations of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, the accompanying drawing is made a part of the description, and therein thefigure is an enlarged view showing and partially in section, the piston head and its rod, constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the drawin the piston-rod 1 is provide with an inclined POIiLlOll Qs rminating in the reduced spin le 3, screw threaded at itsouter end for the reception of the jam and holding parts of the pistonhead together and'the latter firmly upon the end of the piston-rod against the shoulder 5, formed atthe juncture of the inclined portion 2 with the body of the piston-rod.
The piston-head consists of the two circular parts 6 and 7, the part 6 bein pro-- vided with the slightly enlarged hu -portion 8. The part 6 is provided m lts perlphthe outer end of cry with the groove 9 begining substantially midway transversely of said periphery and ending at the inside face of the part 6. The part 7 of the piston-head is provided with a similar peripheral groove 10 terminating laterally of the periphery ofsaid part at the flat face 11, which latter extends to a reduced and elongated portion 12 0xtending to the inner face of the part fi which latter has a number of threaded apertures 13 for the insertion of a removing instrument. The part 7 is also provided with the elongated hub-portion l lcentrally bored for the reception of the spindle/end 3 of the pi ton rod and provided with an inclined p0 tion for cooperation with'the inclined part 2 of the piston-rod. The two parts 6 and 7, when secured together as described, form between them a peripheral groove in thepis ton-head for the reception of a piston-ring, which latter consists of a two-part, substantially U-shaped clamp or holder, one part of which is provided with the vertical wall 15 terminating at its outer end inthe flange lfi, the outer surface of which is grooved so as to correspond in a measure with the wall 11 and groove 10 in the part 7. The body-part 17 of the U- haped piston-ring extends at a right-angle to the wall 15 and occupies nearly all of-the ripheral groove formed in the piston-he The opposite wall 18 of the piston-ring extends parallel with the wall 15 and is provided wi aflange 19, the outer face of which is grooved soas lJO'OOHfOHII substantially to the groove 9 and inner face of the part 6 of the piston-head. The bodypart 17, of the piston-ring, is rovided with one or more screw-threaded ores 20, into which an instrument may be inserted for removing the parts, the wall 18 having like apertures 20*, for like purposes and the two parts holdin in the groove, a ring filling in two parts in icated by 21 and 22, said fillin having a backing-ring 23 of leather, an under said backing-ring an expansion-band indicated by 24. The ring filling 21 and 22 may be made of rubber, but is preferably made of bronze, the same being a material less liable to corrode or rust under any and all conditions, irrespective of the purpose for which the piston-head is used.
On each side of'the piston-ring, and between the same and the two parts of the head, a flexible packing 25 is inserted, the same consisting of a ring or strip suificiently wide to enter the groove formed by the two parts of the piston-head in the periphery of the latter and between the same and the piston-ring, the said strips of flexible packing being turned over into the groove 9 on the one side and the groove 11 on the other side of the piston-head. This packing 25 is of leather, in case the piston-head is used for cylinders for water or gas compression, or will be of metal, if the piston is used for steam. From this construction, it will be clearly understood that a compact and eificacious piston-head is produced, which can be used in various connections for fluid compression, and that, according to its use, the material of the several parts wi 1 be changed, as above indicated, a certain kind'of material being used for gas and liquid compression, and another kind of material being used for steam compression.
The piston-mechanism is herein illustrated Without reference to any application which .may be made of the same, for the obvious reason that my invention is not confined to i any use to which the piston-head ma be put; but, I have found this piston-head 'to I work-admirably in connection with both the compression and ex lgansion chambers or cyle;
inders of the ice-ma ing apparatus disclosed in my application aforesaid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A piston-head consisting of two cylin drical portions; means for securing said portions together so as to form a peripheral groove; a two-part piston-ring seated in the groove of the said head and having between them a single peripheral groove; a filling, seated in the groove of the piston-ring, 'consisting of two parts arranged side-by-side; and an expansion-ring between the saidfilling and the piston-ring.
2. A piston head having a peripheral groove; 2. piston-ring seated in the groove of the piston ring;
the head and having a peripheral groove; a filling seated in the groove of the pistonring and cgmposed of two parts arranged side-by-side; a packing under the filling; and an expansion-band under the packing.
3. A piston-head having a groove in its periphery; a piston-ring seated in the groove of the head and-having a groove in its periphery, said ring being smaller than the groove in said head; packing between the sides of the ring and the flanges of the head, said packing overlapping the periphery of said head; and a filling in the groove of the piston-ring.
4. A piston head composed of two parts forming a groove between them; means for securing said parts detachably together; a piston ring composed of two parts forming a groove between them and seated in the groove'of the head; means for detachably se-' curing the parts of the piston ring together; a two-part fillingsecured in the groove of and packing between the piston ring and the flanges of the head, said packing lying in the grooves of the head flanges.
5. A piston-head consisting of two complemental portions having each a groove in its periphery, means for combining said portions so as to produce :a cylindrical head having a central eripheral ring composed 0% a plurality of cylindrical portions, one of which is right angular in cross section, the said portions being grouped within the groove of the head so as to form a circumferential groove; a'filling disposed ii1the groove of the piston ring; and an ex pansion band under the filling.
