Application 1aed lip-re e, we?. aerial No. aaneen,
Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, llave invented a eerlain new and useful'lnnarow-imenlI in 'lulliing-Cutters, of which ilnprovementihe iolq lowingY is a specification.
My invention relales to millingI callers ei' the inserted iootli type, and its objecy is lo provide an appliance of such type which. n ill il power of the heaviest cui"y ie lie applied directly te the removal ofmale rial, and in which the cutters Shall loe vof simple and inexnensive construction, and be connected lo the head in such manner as te be readily inseriilele and renie `ile, and lio lie firmly lie-,ld inr positionvduring operatief; without. liability lo breakage or lo vibration or chattering. l
The irlnpr-iwement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
ln ille accompanying flrawin'g: Figure l is a View, partly in side-elevation and partly in longiludinal ceniralsection, of a millii'xg cutter embodying my invention, some e? the culers being' removed, to sliow ille grooves more cl xarly; l `ig- Q, an end'view., iu elevation` of the same: and, Figs. 3 and 4, partial lraz'isverse sections, ou an enlarged scale, ai'y the lines a a and 7) 7;, respeclively, of Fig. l.
ln llxe practice oi.' my invention, provide a cuiller head, l, which is formed of suit/able to eylindr'ical form and bored ont lo fil: upon a shaf, a lengril'm l key way, Q, being in its laure lo receive ay key by which ii secured lo ille shaft. The cuiller head is *einen mounted upon a mandrel, and a plurality of helical greoves, 3, cut in iis periphery, in which correspondingly forced culteifs, 4f, are inserted and secured, as presently 'o described, The front or leading' sides of i-lie caller `grooves are sulisiantialljgf radial, and ille rear sides 'thereof are elif/lilly undercut, or inclined forwardly from radial lines, so that lie lieti'oms of lie grooves are slightly Wider than their isps, and the bctiems oli the grooves are also normal, or at i angles, to their rear sides, se that, wlie'i cutters are inserted and secured in pefsiticge, they will have a forward rake or .f iiieai.Y
A caller, 1l, is inserted in. eacl'i. ci? grooves, 3, the 4entiers being steel, Vel" subseniiaily reean-r. and ci greater length llian cuiers.

I claim as 1ny invention and desire tesecure by Letters Patent:
1. The eombination, in a milling cutter, of a heleally undercut grooved cutter head,l a helical cutter :extending longitudinally in] said groove of th@ Sutter head and abutting against one side of he groove, and a plurality of expansible' fastening devices interposed between the cutter ,and the other side of the groove.
2. The combination, in a milling gutter, of a helically grooved cutter head, a helical cutter extending longitudinally in a groove of the `cutter head, a plurality of fastening wenn@ .Cutter head, fastening insets interposed be tween the cutter and one side .0f the groove, and expanding wedgetttng in the fastening insets. Ll. The combination, in a milling cut-ter, of a helioally grooved cutter head,'-a helical matter extendine longitudinally in an undercutgroovlof t ie cutter head, fastening inl sets intelposed'between the cutter and one side ot the groove, ea ,ending wedges fitting in,` the fastening mises, anda metal filling,- n the groove spaces between "the fastening insets.
5. The combination, in ,a xnllingeutter,
of greater width at its hottoni'than at its top, a helical cutter extending longitudinally in said groove and abuttinw against one sidel thereof, and a plurality oioexpansible fastening devices interposed between the cutter and the opposite tif-@11 gI'OOV- GHABLE PEQK.
