Be it known that I, SIMON A. D. BER- TRAND, of Dawson, in the Yukon Territory of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road Grading Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines designed for the purpose of rounding up the surface of a highway removing the earth or gravel from the edge of the road and depositing it in the middle with the de sired slope or angle on each side.
A further object is to provide a machine of simple compact construction, in which the cutters or shares used for scraping the gravel, are separately or collectively under the immediate control of the operator to permit the 'depth of the cut to be controlled and to allow the machine to clear any obstruction which might cause damage, or for the purpose of equalizing the quantity of gravel handled by either one or both of the grading shares.
A further object is to provide a grading machine capable of erforming at one operation the work usua ly requiring two opera tions with the ordinary type of grading machine.
A further object is to provide means whereby the side or lateral thrust tending to force the machinelaterally with respect to the desired direction of movement, is avoided.

The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a grading machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal'sectional view of the same.

cient eccentricity to allow the grading shares or cutters to be cranked for the purpose of raising or lowering them. The grading shares consist of blades 5 and 6 having lower cutting edges 7 and connected with one another by cross bars 7, 8, 9 and 10. Upon these cross bars floors or platforms 11 are arranged. The grading shares converge from their forward toward their rear ends and the effect of such an angle is to direct the gravel at the sides of the road toward the middle as the machine is drawn along.
A cross piece 12 is provided between the bars 8 and 9, and above the floors 11 and this cross piece has bearings 13 and 14'on the crank axles. Levers 15 and 15 are secured on the inner ends of the crank axles and have ratchet mechanisms 16 to engage the teeth of racks 17 that are secured to the floors 11 and the cross bars 8 and 9. In front of the grading frame I provide a forward axle 18 having carrying wheels 19 and a draft connection 20. A draft connection 21 is pivotally attached at its rear end to the forward cross bar 7 and has a king bolt connection 22 at its forward end with the axle 18. A lever 23 pivoted on a quadrant 24 has a link connection 25 with a bar 26 on the draft connection 21, the operation of said lever tending to raise or depress the forward end of the grading frame and the cutting edges of the shares.
I claim as my invention:
1. A road-grading machine, comprising two cutters or shares, set at equal angles and distances from the center line, a divided axle having an eccentricity between its pivotal point and supporting wheels, a lever rigidly attached to each half of axle, suitable means for attaching said cutters or shares to said axle, substantially as set forth.
2. A road-grading machine comprising two grading shares or cutters, crank axles and carrying wheels therefor, said shares converging toward one another from the front to the rear of the machine, and journaled on said crank axles, levers secured on said axles and whereby said shares may be raised or lowered, and a draft connection attached to the forward portion of said shares.
3. A grading machine comprising two crank axles and carrying wheels therefor,
1; necting them with one another, means supporting said shares on said axles and allowmg them to be raised or lowered indegrading shares converging from front to rear and a connecting frame between them, means comprislng crank axles and levers therefor for raising or lowering said shares,
a draft connection attached to the forward end of said frame and means for tilting the forward portion of said shares and frame.
