Be it known that l, CHARLES F. GRABER, a citizen of theW United States, residing at. Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pyrotechnic Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates, generally, to improvements in pyrotechnic devices and, the invention relates, more particularly, to a pyrotechnic device comprisin a suitable pyroteclmic composition capa le of being exploded by percussion and inclosed with a safety-coating, so as to providea device of the general character hereinafter more fullyT set forth which shall be free from accidental ignition due to any friction caused in handling the device, or While carrying the same in the ocket, or while in transmission when packe for shipment from place to place.

My present invention has for its principal obj ect to provide a new and simple, as well as a perfectly safe pyrotechnic device known in theart as crazy crackers; and, the invention has for its further object to provide a novel pyrotechnic device which shall be perfectly safe against accidental ignition due to friction in the handling or shipping of the iinished product.

Other objects of this invention not at this clearly evident from the following detailed description.

My inventionv consists, primarily, in the novel pyrotechnic device hereinafter more fully described, and in the novel process or method of making the same.

In the accompanying drawing is illustrated in transverse section, on an enlarged scale'a crazy cracker showing one of the uses to which my novel pyrotechnical compound may be put, the crazy cracker being ignited by scratching, as in the manner of igniting a match, or by throwing the article down upon a hard surface, in the manner of the usual hand-torpedoes.

.is manufactured in the following manner.

Ten pounds of thick gum-arabic with sufficient-water, say about one gallon are placed in a vessel and heated to provide a comparatively thin but sticky mass. To this mass is then added one pound and fourteen ounces of stick or white phosphorus, the latter becoming intimately intermingled o1' mixed with the gum-arabic and water in Said sticky mass while the latter is agitated and while it is kept hot. As soon as the several ingredient-s have been thoroughly incorporated, three pounds and six ounces of carbonate of magnesium are added. The mixture is then allowed to cool, while still stirring or agitating the mass, so as to obtain an intimate mixture. Six pounds of chlorate of potash rapidly stirred in one pint of boiling water so as to produce a paste-like mass, are thenl added so as to obtain a plastic or putty-like mass. i Pieces of thin tissue are then placed in suitable molds and the plastic or puttylike mass poured or put upon each piece of paper in the depression of a mold. After folding over the projecting edge-portion of the tissue paper or other thin material used the article or body thus formed is tamped tight and removed from the mold and allowed to dry. The bodies are thendipped into liquid glue, gum, dextrin, or other suitable liquid of a gum-like or sticky nature, so as to produce the hereinabove mentioned surface 3, which is then finally coated with a protective material, such as wood pulp or a material of a similar nature, the same being sifted upon or otherwise applied to the still gummy or sticky surface 3, so as to adhere to the same and thereby produce the shell or coating 4 previously mentioned, which as soon as the finished product has finally dried pound by friction caused by the rubbing tol g'ether of tWo or more of the finished articles. i

From the foregoing description of my present invention it Will be clearly evident that I have i above-mentioned'ingredients, preferably by and scope of the .position capa the Weights stated, but it will be understood, and I am fully aware of the fact that the proportions of the ingredients by Weight may be changed Without departing from the spirit present invention, as set forth in the appended claims. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact proportions of the various ingredients named in the foregoing specification.

I claim 1. The herein described pyrotechnic device comprising a suitable pyrote'chnic comb e of being exploded by pervice comprising. a suitable pyrotechnic com position capable of being exploded by percussion andv inclosed Within a safety-coating comprising a Wrapper of tissue paper having its outer surface gummed, and a layer of Wood-pulp adhering to said gummed surface,

substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
