'PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER E. PETTINGELL,
OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
DRU'lVL-BEATING- APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27', 190'8.
Application led December 16, 1907. Serial No. 406,696.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. PETTINGELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Drum-Beating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drum beating apparatus and more particularly to pedal actuated means whereby a bass drum and cymbal or triangle can be conveniently actuated by the foot of the user.
One of the objects of the invention is to simplify the construction of devices of this character by reducing the number of bearings and parts usually employed and by providing' simple means whereby the quick rebound of the drum stick is permitted immediately subsequent to its contact with the drum head.
A still further object is to provide means whereby the operation of the drum stick can be controlled so as to increase or diminish the rebound thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus, a portion thereof being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the apparatus, certain parts being either broken away or shown in section. Fig. 3 is a section on line Qc-, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a .portion of a modified construction.
Referring to the iigures by characters of reference, 1 designates the base of the device, the upper face thereof being beveled toward one end as indicated at 2 so as to constitute a stop for the lower beveled portion 3 of a This pedal is connected by means of a hinge 5 to the base 1 at the inner ends of the beveled faces thereof and a spring 6 is interposed between the two beveled faces of these members and serves to hold said faces normally pressed together and with that portion of the pedal beyond the end 5 normally resting upon the base. Secured upon one side of the base is a yoke-like bracket 7 having an extension 8 suitably secured to the side of the base and another extension 9 fastened to one end of said base. Ears 10 extend upward from the side portions of the yoke and constitute bearings for necks or trunnions 11 extending from the ends of a cylinder 12. Extending radially from this cylinder is a drum stick 13 having a suitable head 14 and if preferred a metal rod 15 may be secured to the drum stick by extending the same therethrough as indicated at 16 and bending the end 17 thereof against the drum stick and fastening it in any preferred manner as by means of a staple 18. Rod 15 extends at an angle to the drum stick 13 and has a head 19 designed to strike a cymbal or triangle. That portion of the pedal adjacent the cylinder 12 has a transverse groove or recess 20 and secured across one end of this groove or recess is a plate 2l provided with an opening 22 through which is slidably mounted a screw threaded stem 23. This stem is provided with a head 24 on which is fastened a clamping plate 25. Secured between this clamping plate and the head is one end of a flexible band 26 formed of sheepskin, leather or other desirable material and said band extends once around the cylinder 12 and has its other end fastened to the lower face of the pedal 4, there being a recess 27 in base 1 to receive said secured end of the band when the parts are in their normal positions. The band is fastened at one or more intermediate points to the cylinder as indicatedat 28. A nut 29 engages the projecting end of stem 23 and is designed to bear against the plate 21. The entire pedal is preferably covered with a rubber strip 30 which extends over the groove 20. Notches 31 may be formed in the intermediate portion of bracket 7 so as to permit said bracket to be fixedly connected to a drum.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be fully understood from the foregoing description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings. When one end of the pedal 4 is depressed against the stress of the spring 6 the opposite end thereof will pull upward on the taut lower portion of band 26 and cause a partial rotation of cylinder 12. When the pedal has reached the limit of its movement the head of the drum stick will be positioned at a point slightly removed from the drum head but said head will be swung by momentum into contact with the head because the upper portion of the band 26 is left loose and permits this additional movement of the l drum stick independent of the cylinder 12.
It will be apparent therefore that the drum stick will be free to rebound a short distance as soon as it strikes the drum head. By manipulating the stem 23 the normal position of the drum stick relative to the iori zontal can be varied.
The apparatus hereinbefore described is designed for moving the drum stick in a lane extending transversely of the pedal. ligt is to be understood, however, that by slightly modifying the construction the drum stick can be moved in a plane extending longitudinally of the pedal. Such a modifica* tion has been illustrated in Fig. 4 wherein a yoke 32 is shown secured to one end of the base and the axis of the drum 33 extends parallel with said end. A groove 34 is formed longitudinally within the pedal and has a socket 35 at one end provided with a retaining plate 36. The threaded stein 37 is slidably mounted in this plate and has a band 38 fastened to one end while the other end extends into socket 35 and is engaged by an adjusting nut 39. It will thus be seen that the parts can be adjusted in the same manner as heretofore described.
What is claimed is:
l. In apparatus of the character described the combination With a pedal, a partly revoluble member journaled adjacent thereto, and a beating device extending from said member; of a flexible band surrounding said member and secured thereto at an intermediate point, the ends of said band being fastened to the pedal,
2. The combination with a movably supported pedal, a partly rotatable member supported adjacent thereto, and a beating device extending `from said member; of a flexible band surrounding said member and fixedly secured at an intermediate point thereto and at one end to the pedal, and an adjustable connection between the other end of said band and the pedal.
3. ln apparatus of the character described the combination with a movable pedal, a partly revoluble member, and a beating del l l l l i i i vice extending from said member of an adjusting device mounted upon the pedal, a flexible device fixedly secured at one end, and fastened at its other end to the adjusting device, said flexible device being secured at an intermediate point to the partly revoluble member.
4. T he combination with a base, a bracket connected thereto, a partly revoluble member supported by the bracket, and a beating device extending from said member; of a pedal movably mounted upon the base, and a flexible band connected at its ends to the pedal and surrounding and secured at an intermediate point to, the partly revoluble member.
5. The combination with a base, a bracket connected thereto, a partly revoluble 1nember supported by the bracket, and a beating device extending from said member; of a pedal movably mounted upon the base, a flexible band fixedly secured at an intermediate point to the partly revoluble member and at one end to the pedal, and an adjustable connection between the other end of the band and the pedal.
6. The combination with a base, a bracket connected thereto, a partly revoluble member supported by the bracket, and a beating device extending from said member; of a pedal movably mounted upon the base, a flexible band fixedly secured at an intermediate point to the partly revoluble member and at one end to the pedal, a head slidablj' mounted within the pedal and connected to the other end of the band, a threaded stem projecting therefrom, and means engaging the stem and bearing against the pedal for shifting said stem to actuate the head.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
