CLAY E. MCMILLAN, 0F 'COUNCL GROVE, KANSAS SAFETY-SHIELD FOB DESK HARRWS.
Specification of Letters Fatent.
Patented Get. 27, 1908.
Application filed January 21, i908. Serial No. 411,885.
To all whom' it may concern: 1 Be it known that I, CLAY E. MoMiLLAN, a i, citizen of the United States, residing at Council Grove, in the county of 'ri/.torrie and State g of Kansas, have invented a new and useful l, Improvement in a Safety-Shield for Y.Disk i Harrows, of which the following is a specificai tion. This invention relates to a shield or tender for disk harrows, and the object oil the inven i tion is to provide a tender for the cutting` blades which will prevent the driver or the horses being cut or injured by said blades. The invention consists of the novel teatures of construction hereinafter described, L pointed out in the oiairn and shown in the i accompanying drawings, in which 'Figure i is an end view of a harrou with i my device applied thereto. Fig. l is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view ol the shield removed from the harrow.
ln these drawings A represents a harrow now in use and which manufactured is not provided with any shield or fenderllor the rihis harrow is formed in two sections one upon each side of the seat and each section is provided with a rear traine bar A and a iront bnr A2. it is also pro- 1 vided with braces A connecting; the two soctions with the tongue, said braces converging toward their front ends. My shield consists of two bars B i'or each section of the harrow, t which bars are angled, the horizontal por i disks of each section.
being provided tions resting transversely members A." and A2 and being bolted to them. A forward portion of each bar B stands downwardly and forwardly and to each pair of bars is secured a flat n'ietal plate C which forms a downwardly and foruardhT inclined shield above and in advance of the cutting Each ot these shields is slotted obliquely from its lower edge as shown at C and through these slots pass the braces A3.
By the construction herein shown and described, protection against injury -l'rom the blades is provided for without interfering with the handlingr of the hai-row, without increasing the amount ol rooni required for turning it and without adding;v an excessive weight to any particular' part ol" it.
Having thus i'ully described my invention, what l claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, :f-
T combination with a sectional disk harrow, having tongue braces, ot angled bars arranged in pairs, one pair boing carried by cach section of the harrow, shields carried by the angled portions oi said bars, said shields with oblique slots extending troni their lower forward edges, tho tongue braces passing' through said slots.
