-' following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings,-is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention has for its object an improvement on the last construction of-my application Serial No. 409,262, filed Jainiary 4, 1908, whereby much greater strength and stability. of the last are secured and the same is automatically locked in lengthened position and readily unlocked for shortening.
The constructional details of the invention will be pointed out more at length in the course of the following description, taken with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown a' preferred embodiment of the invention. I
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved last in side elevation, part of the side being broken away to show the internal construction; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; and Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary sectional views of slightly modified constructions.
In the preferred construction herein shown. the fore-part 1 and heel-part 2- are severed along a broken line 3,4; 5, G, 7. the upper forward end of the heelpart being preferably cut away at 8, and said last parts are joined by a hinge or hinge-plate 9 pivoted on a pin-or rivet 10 at its forward end and on a heavy rivet 11 at its rear end said severing on the broken line of cut and said pivoted link cooperating to permit pivotal movement of the two last-parts with relation to each other when in a shoe: At its front end the link or hinge-plate 9 is provided with a locking finger or latch 12 pivoted thereto at 13 and having a shoulder Hoverhanging a locking pin 15 extending across the kcrf 16 in which the hinge parts are mounted in the forepart. said finger being normally pressed toward the .backof the last by a spring 17. The line of severance is such that instead'of having simply a slight overhang or engaging corner as in mv above mentioned application. "I have provided a horizontal abutment or ledge between the points 5 and 6, so that when the last is in lengthened position great strengtli is provided (especially when the location and arrangement of the heavy pins or rivets 10, 11 and plate 9, and the inclined contacting walls of the last between the points i and 5 are taken into account) to resist leveling pressures, the last then being bottom up, and when the last is in shortened position great stability is insured by the engagement of the lower front .corner of the heel-part with the overhanging abutment 5. Instead of riveting the parts 9 and 12, they may be pivotally secured together in any other manner, as for instance as shown in Fig. 3, where the pivoting of the parts is secured by a circular projection 18 on the-'75 hinge-plate,,partially embraced by a coinplemental recesslt) on the finger 12. This; avoids the separate riveting and yet brings the finger 12 into the same vertical plane as the hinge-plate 9 for distributing the pull-i ing strain with the greatest strength and to the best advantage the same as when the two parts are halved together and riveted 'as shown in Fig. 2. Also, when a positive locking of the last-parts is not desired, but
it is desired to lock the last-parts by merely a retarding or strong frictional holding of the last-parts, the shoulder 11 isomittedand the locking finge r.12 is cut away. as in'd'icated at 20, thereby accomplishing the result desired.
My last is primarily intended for a first last, in which case it starts in a shoe. in its lengthened position. and is held rigid by the peculiarities of the cut 'or line of severance and by the lock, and in this position goes through the various machines. such as pulling-over maclnue. heeler, and leveler, after which the locking finger or latch 12, which has previously prevented any possible 1novement of the last-parts. is pushed forward against the action of spring 17 until the shoulder l-l. escapes from the pin 15. thereby permitting the last to turn up into shortened position and be released from the shoe.
For relasting purposes. the last is normally-in the position shown in dotted lines. bottom up, supported in usual manner at its heel or a relasting jack. and the shoe is forced over the toe and back to the heel, 11n
the tendency of the last to move unexpectedly into lengthened position being prevented by the engagement of the corner of the heel at the front bottom edge thereof with the overhanging inclined wall or secant face of the orepart. been forced fully over the last, the latter and the supported shoe are removed from the I ,jack and the heel-part is shoved down into results in a pullingstrain of the pins 10 and 15 toward each other, thereby binding the last together, as distinguished from tending to split the last, which latter has been a serious disadvantage of the common locking meansfor this general type of last, in which the locking. device has been so constructed as to resistshortening movement by an outward or upward pressure orstrain instead of the herein downward or inward strain.
As already intimated, I do not intend to limit my invention to the precise construc tion' shown, as various modifications and rearrangements of parts may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
The last herein 'shown is one form or embodiment of a divided last whose heel-part has a combined pivotal andsliding-swing movementwith relation to the forepart, the
same not being herein broadly claimed, but claimed in my copending application Serial No. 421,521,filed March 16, 1908, and that particular form in which the link is apertured at its opposite ends, which are mounted snugly on transverse pivot pins for pivotal movement only whereby the pivot pins are maintained in all positions at the same distance apart, although likewise herein shown, is not herein claimed, but is claimed 111 my copending application Serial No. 409,262, first mentioned above. The-present case is limited to the particular line of cut which includes the rearward extending abutment with its horizont lly overlapping wall or surface, and to the provision of locking means mounted on or movable with or actuated by the movement of the link or hingeplate, as hereinafter more particularly defined, and I wish it further understood that in the claims I intend the word locking means or looking finger to include the frictional looking as by the inclined surface When the shoe has 20 as well as the more positive locking by the shoulder let, unless a given claim is restricted to the latter locking-shoulder by its express terms. I refer to the claims for a definite statement of the features to which this case is restricted, and I have referred to my two other copending cases in order that it maybe understood why certain features herein shown are not herein claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A divided last, comprising a forepart and heelpart, separated by a broken line of cut and provided with connecting means,
permitting each of said parts to have a pivotal movement with relation to the other when. in a shoe, said two last-parts being severed by a line of cut affording a corner at the front bottom edge of the heel-part and an abutment extending approximately horizontally rearwardly from the rear bottom end of the forepart in position to en gage and support said corner when the last is shortened.
2. A divided last, comprising a forepart and heel-part separated by a broken line of cut and provided with a single connecting hinge-plate pivoted adjacent its opposite ends in and to the respective last-parts, permitting each of said parts to have a pivotal movement with relation to the other when in a shoe, said two last-parts being severed by a line of .cut affording acorner at the front bottom edge of the heel-part and an abutment extending approximately horizontally rearwardly from the rear bottom end of the forepartin position and operating to engage and support said corner when the last is'shortened.

4. In a last, a forepart and heel-part, a hinge-plate pivoted at its opposite ends in said respective lastparts, a locking finger mounted on said hinge-plate and movable therewith eccentrically about the adjacent pivot, and means cooperating with said finger to lock the last in lengthened position.

9. In a last, a forepart and heel-part, a hinge-plate pivot-ally connecting said lastparts. a locking finger mounted on the forward end of said hinge-plate beyond the pivot thereof in the forepart and extending upwardly in said forepart, said finger having a locking shoulder, and atransverse pin in said forepart'to he engaged by said shoulder when the last is in lengthened position, said finger extending above the last in position to be engaged externally oi' the last for unlocking the latter.
